Regarding real agreed..... however.

Surly not even roman can expect us to be able to compete with real or barca at the moment? we are 2 seasons of making the right moves (including keeping our manager) with are squad from being european power houses again. This is nothing to be ashamed of, it happens to every team. Its just important to be realistic about where we are and have a clear focused plan of how we are going to get to where we want to be

 
Mourinho at Real is very different to Mourinho at Chelsea. He is a much better manager now than he was at Chelsea, able to win with attacking football. Everyone conveniently forgets Mourinho's last season where we consistently struggled to break down teams.

To be fair barak I don't think he was criticising Mourinho to the extent you're suggesting. Merely saying he has improved. Somehow I don't think Liam's 'death of football' midfield would be played by him these days.

Yes, a close second to a very weak Manchester United team, who we repeatedly failed to overtake when given the chance due to a lack of attacking ability.

I'm not criticising Mourinho at all, I think it's important to recognise that Mourinho was far from the finished article at Chelsea and Chelsea were merely a stepping stone and part of his coaching learning experience.

 
The Shevchenko debacle didn't help us that season. It's a bit like the Torres debacle recently. Manager fiddles to try and get the best out of the player, it affects the rest of the team.

 
Madird are the best club side on the planet right now, in my opinion. A few observations

-Completely agree about Jose. He went there with everyone saying Perez would sack him within a year for playing catenaccio style football. And instead they are possibly the most entertaining side in the world and move like lightingning on the break. Six or seven goals a game is becoming routine for them.

-About Ozil. By all accounts nobody else had a shot at getting him. Sure, other clubs might have come in earlier, but once Real Madrid made their interest known the player committed to them and that was that. Sahin is the same thing except they signed him for peantus before the window even opened. They are very good at using their influence to charm a player and get an incredibly cheap deal. Then again, they also dont hesitate to pay top dollar. I guess it depends if its a German club or a Portuguese one.

- Ronaldo has scored over a goal per game in the league, and has 106 Madrid goals from 106 games. He is like #12 on Madrids all time scoring chart, and has passed Il Fenomeno Ronaldo in the rankings using about 70 fewer games. THis guy is on a different planet for scoring, and if/when he takes El Classico by storm like Messi has done so regularly he will finally make the whole BPITW debate open again.

-Its almost like it was done by design, but the offensive core of that team is all 23 or younger. Ozil, Sahin, Benz, Higuain, Marcelo, Di Maria. Khedira, Granero, and Callejon are 24, Ramos 25, Diarra and Ronaldo 26. If they spruce up their defense a bit and go younger (40 million for David Luiz anyone?) they can keep this core together for many seasons to come and finally have a shot at what Barcelona has had over them the last few years: that machine like understanding with eachother.

-I think they have the element of consistency that Barca are lacking domestically, but I am not sure they have the champions league formula right. Maybe 2012? It would be a hell of a story to see Jose return to England and win it at Wembley (if we cant, of course)

Will there be anything quite more dramatic then AVB v Jose. The master v the apprentice with the masters old club...bla bla bla yadda yadda yadda.

if we go through against valencia put your money on it because UEFA will make it happen.

Only things to be hopefull for:

a) Genk are actually ubeaten at home in the CL arn't they? the drew with us and valencia and are a very different proposition at there gaff.

b) If it does happen the press confrence is going to be intesting.... which I guess is UEFA's point.

Well, now we cant get them. Thankfully.

I am of the mind that I want English sides to do well (with Wenger and Neville the last few days there has been alot of this sentiment), especially against the likes of Barca, Bayern, Juve, etc, but its a real shame Madrid cant get Arsenal. I wouldve loved to see them give someone I dont like a real smacking while they are in white hot form. Maybe Man Utd will finish second and oblige.

 
Madrid played with this line up yesterday:

Adán, Arbeloa, Varane, Albiol, Coentrao; Granero, Sahin, Callejon, Kaka, Higuain, Benzema... and still beat A**x away 0-3 to finish with 6 out of 6 wins.

That squad is really something.

 
That's a league-challenging first-team, let alone a second string.

It's funny that under Mourinho they've become more like the Galacticos Perez wanted them to be than ever before.

Madrid will beat Barcelona this weekend and quite comfortable. Barcelona just don't have the firepower or desire Madrid do at the moment.

I wouldn't... It would spawn another 1000 people talking about how good they are going to be along with their 'istory and would probably cause me to lose the last meal I had eaten. :laugh2:

Agree they've become the galacticos but the difference is they have made the galacticos rather than bought them. Yes they bought Ronaldo and, to a lesser extent, Kaka in their prime but players like Ozil, Higuain, di Maria and even Sahin etc were hardly galacticos before they came to Madrid. I hope we dont draw them before the final.

Kinda feel the same way. Last season took a lot out of Barca. Madrid fought like madmen. Not sure Barca has the strength of purpose to hold them off this season. Funny how that happens: same people, different result.

Ozil had just been one of the players of the World Cup, and was one of the hottest prospects in Germany - he wasn't as established as Kaka or Zidane or (either) Ronaldo, but he was hardly a nobody. What they've done, and what we seem to be trying to do with Romeu or Courtois (or arguably even Mata, who's not that much more established a star than Ozil was), is switching to grabbing young players when they're good enough to contribute but before they become prohibitively expensive; then they just have to work the players into the lineup, and if the player develops properly they've got a gem on their hands.

 
ESPN are showing one of last seasons classico's shot cinematically with a classical soundtrack behind. It's called El Classico:The Movie. It's pretentious as f**k. Says exactly what is wrong with everyone's view of Spanish football. That it is somehow art.

Nonetheless massive game. I really want Madrid to roll Barca for Jose. Watching this old footage is making me a little nostalgic. I really hope he does return here some day.

 
Madrid laid an egg today. Even at the end, with a 3-1 lead, Barca was slicing and dicing in Madrid's penalty box.
