According to radio reports, a few hundred hooded men attacked Roma fans outside the ground. Roma fans then started throwing missiles and fighting with the police. Riot police were then called in along with mounted police.

The reporter reckons the problems were made worse by the police insisting on Roma fans being searched before they entered the ground. Apparently this delayed getting the Roma fans inside the stadium, and the longer they were milling about outside the ground the more trouble there was. Reporter also said that 99% of Roma fans were young men, no women or children, and that they were "well up for it".

Can't blame the police for wanting to search the Roma fans - they're well known for being tooled up (Roma fans, that is)

Wish there was TV coverage of it, probably far more interesting than the game will be!

Couldn't agree more. Even if you go down a few goals early in the game and perhaps think that you can't get back into the game you are a real t*at to just give up and let the opponents do what they like. Where's the pride? You wear the shirt you love (I hope) and you should fight until the end so save it from embarrassment.

7-1 is a disgrace and I hope I never see us do the same kind of game as Roma did.

I remember when that was all football fans were, especially away, (even when I was a kid - I can see the irony but was charged by police horses as a Chelsea fan at 6yrs old so I know what I'm talking about, BTW I think I was sheilding my younger brother at the time!!!!)

Saying that I wonder how Manu fans are looking forward to another encounter with Italian police.

Because of what happened in the 70s and 80s, the Continental police are expecting us all to be hooligans and will react to the slightest provocation (or even just anticipated provocation) in the way they always do.

Shouldn't they be trained properly then? What you are refering to happened before most of these officers were born!! (over 20 years ago now!) It's like saying all German supporters should be treated like Nazi's beacuse of what happended during the 40's!!

Police officers in England have learnt to know where the trouble is likely to come from and in most cases will protect the minority (ie the away fans) not go smashing into them becasue it's an easy way out!!
