Maxence Lacroix

I can't fault a single one of our players yesterday when the blame solely lies on
Alonso. I'm now on fraud watch.

Alonso prepares really bad the team for yesterday but the players were shockingly bad too. They had no intensity and showed a surprising lack of quality from Palmer down to Penders. Shocking performance by the players too, not only Alonso.

Nothing against Lacroix, but when Brighton sign a young CB like Vuskovic, it makes you wonder what our scouts are doing. Although maybe it's simply the setup, rather than solely the player. It can take players a while to truly find their feet and prove their abilities to the fullest.

Thought we defended fine up until the Penders howler.

The bigger issue was the setup. The tactics boxed in too many of our players, and Alonso didn’t even acknowledge the biggest problem all game; Tel and Robertson were encouraged to attack our right because they knew Acheampong and Neto wouldn’t threaten on the ball. That imbalance was obvious from the first whistle.

Estevao + Welbeck on for Neto +Quenda at the start of the 2nd could of solved so many issues.

Vuskovic played for Croatia in the 7-0 against England :)

See Suzuki in goal for villa, looks a proper keeper... We've needed one for two seasons. See players we have sold to be able to buy replacements not as good. the entire set up behind the scenese is a joke.

Vuskovic was awful vs us, and he hasn't been that great for Brighton albeit they had a bit of form. Brighton hardly scouted him, they are just a club that can afford to pay him bigger wages while giving him a second chance of sorts, and Tottenham were desparate for van Hecke. It was a good deal of circumstance.

Suzuki has turned down moves to Man U and to PSG. Bigger clubs have stayed away because he demands to be #1. He is in good form but he is just as error-prone as Sanchez was.

Not sure if it has been said before but his attempt to stop tel was very much a token effort of 0 care.
The Acheampong thread is a bit further down.

Lacroix is a very good 1 v 1 defender. He got absolutely rinsed, albeit in a difficult situation. He positioned himself to force Tel into the more difficult shot (stopping him from bursting into the box), tried to get the foot in, and Tel took a chance very well. It is pretty much the textbook way that defending has been coached for 20 years, getting the defenders to play the percentages and make the attacker take sub-optimal shots.

Would have preferred him just wipe out Tel.

But yes Josh defended it poorly as well.

For how truly awful we were though it is only down to Penders monumental f up Spurs got this win. Had he not done that it ends 0-0, a still dreadful but not humiliating result

Fully agree, and that's where the softness of this team seems to be proudly on show. I don't have a lot of faith that will change, either.

Lacroix wasn't on a card. He should have kicked him into next week. Palmer was petulant to get sent off but the team should have rallied around him much harder when Fernandez brought him and Caicedo down.

7 games in, lacroix is very much an old school low block cb which is very rare this days in a top team.

As more and more top team play high press or man to man press. Defending the channel, stepping up and open space defending are pretty much standard requirements this days for top team cb.

If we'd opted to sign Vuskovic in the summer over an experienced player at CB all hell would have broken loose on this forum.

I should have also mentioned, it looks like Jacquet is settling in well at Liverpool. Then you have Araujo who seems to be very good, too. Again, another missed opportunity from us to strengthen the defence further. Btw, I'm actually glad we signed Lacroix, but I do worry about the defensive capabilities of Colwill.

His passing range is good, but his defensive abilities are not at the same level. Granted, this is his first season back after missing a whole season, but defending has never been a strong point of his.

He’s an upgrade on Fofana/Badiashille/Disasi and that’s what we all wanted.
If we go out and get Vuskovic next summer that’s one again an upgrade.
