Fair point. I'm about twelve miles from Cardiff and the accents are very different. One is the almost Scouse of Cardiff and the other the more sing song Welsh of Zulu.

It's very odd seeing the trial on TV and seeing how 'busy' the courtroom is with people moving about, etc.

He gagged I think, as apposed to being physically sick.

I think he is remorseful about what he did but from what I've read he has a temper and is a bit of a gun nut.

That was never going to be a good combination but I don't think he is psychotic or anything that extreme.

 
I really don't care about this trial, to be honest. He's accused of murder, so what?  A lot of people get accused of murder. But I have to admit, it is interesting to look at it from the point of view of a one-time criminal justice major, to compare and contrast the systems of two different countries. 

As far as the gun thing goes, it wouldn't be as big a deal if it weren't for the temper.  My ex (the one I would have married if it weren't for the religion issue) has guns, and goes to the range regularly.  He even took me to the range once.  However, he doesn't have a temper, and gets after me about mine (I don't take it out on others, just me, and never physically).  Some people also collect guns like one would collect stamps (you have to admit, some of them do look pretty cool).

I tend to agree about the focus on one murder Soldiergirl when there are many murders. It'd be interesting to know how many South Africans become murder victims during this trial - and how many alleged murderers receive the time in court that Pistorious receives and his money/status buys. Not a pop at SA - probably the case (in terms of access to justice) in most countries.

 
Its clear they had a argument prior to the shooting. That doesn't bode well for him.

Thing is, how does you PROVE intent?

Pistirous is arguably South Africa's most recognisable star, he was first paralympian to allowed and to be able to compete alongside able bodied athletes.

He was an inspiration for not letting your disabilities hold you back.

Someone that iconic going up for a murder charge? That's a big deal.

He was the shining light of what South Africans can achieve and he let the entire country down.

I cant possibly see how he can get off with this, other than via massive corruption, which wouldn't surprise me.

The evidence against him is overwhelming.

Apart from

> A long history of aggressiveness (needing huge amounts of PR training to control temper, and to able to be seen as normal in public)

> messing about with guns in restaurants

> Firing a gun in anger after being pulled over by cops - That must be a HUGE blow to the defense

> Multiple witness accounts of hearing loud arguments and a women screaming with gun shots

Now, if you are lying in your bed with your partner and you hear a noise in the middle of the night, you are not going to get up and just start shooting.

You are going to at least CHECK if you partner is in your bed! you know, less than a foot away from you. You're gonna most likely go "did you hear that?"

What sort of complete IDIOT would just load the gun and start shooting without checking this first?

He should be found guilty of murder in my view. Even if he somehow didn't mean to do it (absolutely impossible in my eyes), he should be sent to jail for the rest of his life for being so unbelievably STUPID.

Indeed. Which is why the UK's gun laws make it the best country in the world. We have the best police force as a result too.

I have been to a gun range once before, when I was on holiday in Vegas. I enjoyed the experience, but I would never want to own a firearm.

Pistorious is clearly a dangerous nutter. Lock him up!

I rarely disagree with you Moi but guns can be cool and that's why they are a problem. The use in anger of guns is bad but many people find them very attractive (i.e. see US firearms ownership levels). Guns are very clever examples of design; they can operate almost forever if well built, they require no external power source, they can look amazing, etc.

Just a thought.

OK, I will rephrase my statement - guns are only cool in the eyes of morons!

I look at a gun and I only see an item whose sole purpose is to maim or kill - I am not impressed by that.

P.S. While I'm at it, could a mod change the title to PISTORIUS?
