Would someone enlighten me about the physical health of Geremi, Diarra or Boulahrouz? I keep wondering why Jose persists in playing this player when there are players who are better suited for the right back position.

I was saying that Paulo Ferreira was not the best player for that position and I was castigated for saying so. Now after two years it can be seen that he is woefully slow and opponents focus on playing the long ball on that side so that their player/s on that side can exploit Ferreira's speed (or lack thereof). He surely can't be in the squad after the end of this season.

Jose might have been misguided for suggesting that Chelsea and Newcastle played as well as each other to share the points when we squandered a few half chances. Come on Jose, wake up and stop playing the sloth Paulo Ferreira at right back. Sometimes I am convinced a man on crutches can go past him on their left side without much difficulty. We squandered our best opportunity of closing the gap in this game. I am not so sure we will close it seeing the teams we will face in the last four games.

I wish the lads well though and hope that the ManU can again falter and we can pick up the slack. We don't have as many matches left now as three or four weeks ago.

 
I thought the newcastle game was a classic example of media influence. everyone loves to think that they are imperverous to the media, that advertising doesn't effect them etc...

the commentators decided paulo had a bad game. in fact, he was one of the few players to play well for us... aside from losing martins at a corner he did nothing wrong really... always stood up, tried to show milner outside. not his fault there was no one to help him when milner and carr doubled up.

woefully slow? there isn't a better fullback against dribblers- look at the difference in boa morte's threat when he came on. it's obvious to anyone- he's short of confidence and was dropped in one of jose's strangest calls- one that would have got ranieri really hammered...

in any case, the guy hasn't had a run in his postion for an eon... the odd appearance at leftback, in midfield in the middle of the defence... no-one would be on top of their form if they got paulo's treatment.

 
There's an important game on Wednesday and it may have something to do with it.

 
I didn't think Ferreira had a terrible match defensively. I still think that defensively, he's our best right-back. He's just next to useless in attack - that is the problem.

This season we have played a lot narrower than we have ever played before under Mourinho, and we a reliant on fullbacks pushing forward to provide width. This is something that Paulo is not very good at, especially when you compare him to Bridge and Ashley Cole on the other flank.

Cannot disagree more.

Paulo is the best right back at the club by a long way. He just needs games to get his confidence back, having never really recovered from Jose pissing him around as much as he did last season.

I wouldnt swap an on form and confident Paulo Ferreria for any other right back in world football. Sadly we've only seen that for one season, when funnily enough Chelsea broke records defensivley.

His confidence is shot to pieces. Didn't JM bring him on then take him off a few minutes later this year? (or last).

How does he get it back though? Thats the worrying question.

Give Paulo 10 consecutive games and I guarantee everyone will be asking why on earth he was ever dropped (well everyone except Blueberd who would still have him flogged

Having watched yesterday's game via PPMate (my eyesight is 'kin' awful at the best of times), and not having the heart to which the "highlights" on MOTD2. it's difficult to make an assessment of any of the players. However, my overall impression was that passes were going astray all over the pitch, that Paulo (I could just make out which one was 'im some of the time) was no less and no more culpable than the rest of the team.

 
i was getting a tad miffed about how few crosses paulo stops. he stands off the winger far too much and allows them crossing time. whereas cole and bridge are on top of the player making it very difficult. but other than that i thought paulo did ok.

Any winger worth his salt can easily skin Paulo. He (the winger) has sufficient time to change his mind about what he could/not do with Paulo. Paulo, along with Ashley are the easiest backs to run past at the club.

Paulo is slow in making up his mind and too many times has he been beaten when he holds on to the opponent's shirt or trips the opponent who has skipped past him thereby conceding freekicks in dangerous spots. He tends to make Carvalho and Essien cover for him and rescue him on too many occasions. I have seen far many right backs at the club than Paulo Ferreira. Too slow and his only dimension is when he goes forward when he delivers the occasional cross or hits it to an opposing foot. I always feel he will concede a freekick in a dangerous position whenever he comes on.

I hardly see him playing another full season at the club. He certainly was not worth the 12 million which was paid for him.

 
I agree Ferreira is not worth the 12 million we paid for him but we were crazy in paying way over the odds for his services. I think he is a good right back, and I like the fact that he does not run up to try to block players crosses, since then those players will just run past him, like they always do to A. Cole. He knows his strenghts and weaknesses, and plays to them fairly well, in my opinion.

Paulo is a smart player, and is our best throw-in specialist, whereby most other teams have two or three such players, we really only have one. The rest of the bunch are just rubbish when trying to throw in to a teammate - most times they throw it to the other team. It may sound like a minor issue, but trust me, it is not!

 
there's not a better defensive fullback in the league on either flank. (FACT!

I think paulo is quite fast, one of the fastest on the squad...supposedly when they race in training its very close between Paulo and SWP

have you ever seen him throw the ball more than 5 meters? it's not that hard to pick a teammate when you never make long throw-ins.

don't get me wrong, i rate ferreira(opposed to almost the whole hungarian chelsea club's forum where i mostly write) but i think the throw-ins are not in his qualities. even robben's better in it.

he didnt give Giggs a kick in the 3 games he faced him in during his first season. when, funnily enough he was playing regularly and was full of confidence. do you not think these are linked ?

i think you may be right and it may be his last season for us but i for one will be sad to see him go, he was outstanding in his first season and hasnt really been given a fair crack since then (through no fault of his own)

 
I lost count of how many times Paulo was left to defend against two players, with one overlapping. Maybe it's just me but I always thought it was difficult to be in two places at once. I put more of the blame in that respect on SWP. When Joe came on it seemed to help a little but it also may have been due to the opposition tiring. Ashley is the one who takes all day to close someone down at times. ie, the goal from Pennant at Anfield. Other times Ashley is quite good -w ish he'd show mor consistency with preventing those crosses!
