All this seeding lark........what the f**k does it matter??

It dont really matter to supporters, being draw'n against teams in a group stage is a Lottery.

Its NEVER bothered me!

The group stage these days has to be a formality to Chelsea....

...If we dont get through the group stage thats not good enough for the Board.

Please tell me why would it matter to you??

Why would you not want to play at least one decent side in the group stage??

How can we compared to Manure USA in Europe when we've never been to a Champions League Final??

How many times have those scum-bags missed out on CL qaulification since the new CL format was introduced???

This up coming season is only are 6th ever appearance in the Champions League for Chelsea.

It's official - we will be seeded for the first time. Given the past two seasons I'm not sure it really helps but hey ho, at least we're classified as being one of the top 8 teams in Europe.

The teams going into the respective pots for next season are as follows:

(note: teams in pots 3 and 4 need to qualify. The following tables assume that the higher ranked teams do qualify. Of course if one of those lesser ranked teams can cause an upset then they'll take the place of whoever they beat. I don't think that draw has been made yet, but there are some teams capable of upsetting one of the seeded teams: Toulouse, Fenerbache, Sparta Praha, Spartak Moscow, AEK Athens.

There will be eight groups of four teams, with one team in each group to come from each pot.

Teams from the same league can't be drawn into the same group in UCL. Liverpool was a special case when UEFA let them in through the backdoor...

Platini intends to introduce a new co-efficient based on the last twenty five years in European competitions, times the number of goals scored home and away minus the number of foreign nationals playing in the side. Any year a side did not participate in Europe gives a penalty of 15 points. Unfortunately Chelsea drop seventeen places in the new co-efficiency table and go into this year's competition as a fourth seed.

Or here is an even fairer system (that actually rewards "Champions")

Pool A - Title winners in the 8 top-ranked leagues in Europe (ie. England, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Holland, Portugal, Belguim)

Pool B - Title winners in the next 8-ranked leagues in Europe

Pool C - Second place teams in the top 8 leagues

Pool D - Four spots for third place teams from England, Spain, Italy and France/Germany, four spots for teams from smaller leagues who are decided through the qualification rounds.

Basically, I think that if you don't finish in top 3 (i.e. challanging for the title) in the Premiership or Spain etc. then you really don't deserve a place in the champion's league.

I agree whole heartedly with you view TomP, it seems a much fairer selection system.

I can't help wondering how much difference being seeded for next season's competition will actually make. We've managed to get as far as the semi's without being seeded, so I suppose it comes down to how we perform in any given game and to some extent, the luck of the draw.

Having said that, taking up one of the seeded places can definitely be looked up as a mark of progress, some small recognition that we are getting somewhere, and a counter argument to anyone feeling despondent because we've still to get past the semi-final stage.

And to anyone who suspects that one of my reasons for posting this is to take the focus away from all the Scouse related sh!te, then you're damned right.

I wouldn't moan about the scouse stuff too much Lofty - at least it is giving us something to talk about - you should been with us some of the alst few pre-seasons - we nearly all fell out with each other we got so bloody bored!!

Oh well I tried. If you can't beat 'em ...

"In the darkest side of Liverpool

Where the Mile End's never been

Lies the chewed up body of a Scouse git

Where the North Stand's kicked him in

To 'ell with Liverpool

To 'ell with Man City

Cos we will fight, fight fight for the Chelsea

Til we win the Football League"

You'll have to excuse me, it's been that kind of day. So while we're at it ...

"In your Liverpool slums

In your Liverpool slums

You look in the dustbin for something to eat

You find a dead cat and you think it's a treat

In your Liverpool slums"

Next verse anyone?

In your Liverpool slums

In your Liverpool slums ....

Your Mums on the game and your Dads in the nick!!

You cant get a job cos your too f**king thick!

IN YOUR LIVERP*OL SLUMS!!

IN YOUR LIVERPO*L SLUMS!!

You sh*t in the sink and you p*ss in the bath...

...you finger your granny.... you think its a laugh

IN YOUR LIVERPO*L SLUMS

JUST LIKE SCOUSERS WE LOVE ROBBEN!!!

Confirmation we will be in the Top seeds for next season!!

Chelsea handed UEFA boost

21/06/2007 - 9:32:26 AM

Chelsea have finally been granted a place among the Champions League?s top eight seeds.

The former Barclays Premiership champions have missed out before now having failed to amass enough ?coefficient? points.

But the European governing body have now installed Jose Mourinho?s side among the top seeds, meaning the now-deposed English champions will be handed a supposedly easier group stage draw in the coming season.

AC Milan, winners in Athens last month, are top seeds (133.808 ?points?) followed by Barcelona (119.374), Liverpool (112.618) and Inter Milan (107.808).

Arsenal are England?s second-highest seeds with 104.618 followed by new Spanish champions Real Madrid (104.374), Chelsea (99.618) and Manchester United (also 99.618).

Seedings are based on the club?s performances in Europe over the preceding five years as well as the ranking of their national association.

Therefore Champions League debutants Sevilla, although not among the eight, have a relatively high ranking score due largely to their double UEFA Cup triumph over the last two years.

Chelsea have been drawn with Barcelona in the group phase twice in the last three years because the Catalan side have been seeded. The Blues? new status, however, means they will avoid Barca and other top teams until the knockout phase.

England is the only country to have all of their teams seeded for the tournament, which climaxes with the final in Moscow next May.
