Sir Johnny Dankworth RIP

Appreciate Sir Johnny Dankworth and his music won't appeal in any way, shape or form to the vast majority on this site but I wanted to post this thread as a small tribute about the man himself because he was a personal family friend.

Johnny and his wife Cleo Laine despite being a 'Sir' and a 'Dame' of the British realm were so far removed from the airs and graces seen in so many celebrities that being in thier company was like sharing a drink with your friends down the local.

I will always be grateful to you Johnny for the way you looked after my father in his last years, laying on transport so he could watch concerts at your theatre in Wavendon. It meant so much to him as he was unable to play music himself anymore. I will also be forever grateful for the kind words you read at my fathers funeral.

I've never been into that kind of music, but I know that Johnny Dankworth was extremeley highly regarded in musical circles, he'll be greatly missed by many.

I'm sorry that you've lost a family friend, geezer, hope it didn't bring back too many sad memories of losing your dad.

Johnny Dankworth was a superb jazz musician and composer - he composed the theme tune to Tomrrow's World. He played with all the greats - Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman - any great jazz name you can think of, Johnny Dankworth played with.

I have always admired his playing. Now I also know he was a wonderful human being. My sympathies go to his wife Cleo.

My Dad was a massive fan of both Sir Johnny and Dame Cleo so I grew up with and around their music and to be honest I don't think there are/were many if any who could phrase a song better than Cleo Lane. Always sad news when someone with an immense talent passes away. RIP

genuinely sorry about your loss mate. i've actually got an old johnny dankworth vinyl LP recorded with the london philharmonic. it's not the kind of thing i'd usually listen to but it's undeniably classy and enjoyable. and from the little i know, he really was a top bloke.

Geezer, i remember as a kid watching them on tv, my dad liked that sound. Anyhow even though i was young you could feel the chemistry between the two of them.... Geezer son those where nice words

Sorry to hear you lost someone close to you and your family mate, My Mum met Johnny and I think Cleo years ago as she was a singer and was on the London stages a lot in the late fourties and fifties.

Sounds like they had a lot of time for you and your parents, RIP JD.
