Wannabe-pretentious, mediocre little douchebag. So jumped-up it's unbelievable. Why people think he's anything beyond average I don't know. He steals his solos from Tom Morello, and impresses all the 12-year-old girls with Grade 1 two-finger tapping and single note alternate picking. Prick.

This doesn't surprise me from a boy that rates Thin Lizzy! You obviously have no knowledge of Guitar to think Bellamy is 'beyond average'. He was labelled as 'the first guitar genius of the millenium' (their words). He doesn't steal solos from Morello, he merely uses a riff as a skit at the end of Stockholm syndrome!

Go see Muse live, you may be pleasantly surprised!

I play guitar myself, and can say that Messrs Gorham, Robertson, Moore, Sykes, White and Bell's guitar chops make Bellamy look like a complete amateur.

To quote Total Guitar's article:

That is so incorrect I can't describe it...

Also, citing Total Guitar as a source of incorruptable fact is a bad idea at best...

I do agree with you on Muse's skills as a live act though. I haven't seen them myself, but I've seen enough footage to suggest that the general consensus is, on this rare occasion, correct.

I can agree with two of three of those statements, don't know enough about Van Halen to agree with that one.

 
They compared Matt Bellamy's invention and progress on the guitar to Hendrix's and Van Halen's in terms of its significance.

Hendrix and Van Halen defined how a guitar was going to be played for an entire generation.

Matt Bellamy stole some riffs from a guy in a baseball cap and wrote a bunch of average pop-rock songs.

 
You clearly have no idea and seemed to have ignored my post. I guess you're guitaring is stuck in the wrong generation, move over John Denver!

A riff as a skit at the end of a Muse song when played live?

Using that as an example of Bellamy not being credible is like saying Pink Floyd are sh*t because they stole 4 bars from the Doctor who theme in 'One of these days'.

I can only assume you judge the way he plays by listening to 'Starlight' on the top 40, and haven't looked into it enough before writing it off.

Actually Bellamy cites Morello as one of his main influences, so we can assume that the many similarities in their soloing and riffing technique (basic two-finger tapping and very basic alternate picking) are due to Bellamy directly lifting these ideas from him. He also makes liberal usage of Morello's whammy bar w**kery and heavy effects pedalling. I've never seen this skit you mentioned, but that's not what I was referring to.

Having complained about Bellamy's mediocrity to Muse fans before, they have shown me a number of songs which they claim show off Bellamy's talents, including New Born and Showbiz, neither of which did anything other than strengthen my point.

Every musician will or would have been influenced by others, surely thats how it evolves or makes people want to be musicians.

Showbiz in my opinion is a poor example of that. Your term used widely here of 'mediocrity' sounds like something from a Pete Doherty interview (funnily enough mentioned in the post before yours above)

As a sidenote; I am with you on Jimmy Carr though ;)

also you used the word "douchebag"... so on balance it probably is worse than that.
