Tiscali ...

Its going back to last year when I switched from Tiscali lofty, so they probably have improved the MAC routine since then, they "had to improve something on the list".

I believe, though don't quote me, that some kind of organisation mob were getting these providers to use the same system as the rest, as I switched from Tiscali.

Good luck in your quest to get off that network of clowns. Your connection will feel better for it.

Don't worry I haven't forgotten. Not by a long way. The only replies I've got from them are emails telling me I need to phone between 9:00am - 6:00pm, which I've been too busy to do today. I'll leave it til I've got the best part of an afternoon free.

I've just been on the phone to another friend of mine. He and his Mrs has assumed their emails were ok but it looks like they're having the same problems as me. The email they sent me 45 minutes ago still hasn't arrived.

I'm slightly concerned that Eclipse, or whoever I end up moving to, won't be compatible with the SAGEM modem so that's something else I need to investigate.

You get another with Eclipse Lofty, brand new modem, even so, the last one still works too, had the same on Tiscali.

That's nice to know. I didn't see any references on their site so assumed it was a wires only service, which should be perfect for me because I've already got all the kit from Tiscali.

Yea, its a wire jobby, but can pay more for wireless if its a must. One thing you need to know, if your using the sagem one, is that, is it set for higher speeds above 2mb?

Tiscali 8mb (when I was with them), was again like a circus act, never had the option, one said the line could, one said couldnt, you get the idea.. but apparently the modem I used then, could handle it.

The eclipse one is good to go (obviously depending on your telephone line/exchange etc).

Latest I've heard is that my line should support the famous up to 8Mb. Some sites tell me the limit is 6Mb, but I'm really not that fussed. A hypothetical 2Mb is fast enough for me and then some.

As for Tiscali, they've finally discovered there's a problem. From their Service Status page:

Service Status Announcement:Problems with outbound email

16:18:11 Tue May 29 2007

We are currently experiencing issues with outbound emails on our mail servers. This is not affecting all delivery addresses, some mail will continue to be delivered as normal, but some mail is being blocked by the receiving email servers.

Spam is a major issue for all ISPs and periodically all ISPs will be targeted by spammers. We unfortunately have currently fallen foul to such an attack and have been targeted by spammers using our service to send out spam, this in turn has meant other ISPs have taken measures to block mail being sent by Tiscali.

Our engineers are taking urgent action to block the spammers abusing our email service, this will progressively take effect over the next few days. We will post daily updates on the Service Status page and also within Forums until normal service is resumed.

In you are experiencing this problem and are not sure if your important mail is being received, we suggest that you temporarily use an alternative free email service
I could have told them that last Thursday

I wouldn't dream of arguing with that. They've finally more or less managed to sort the email problem - more or less meaning that they don't even know whether any of the "delayed" emails will ever arrive.

In other words, nothing's really changed - they're still crap. But I thought I'd let you I haven't forgotten about moving to another supplier. Pointless doing it this week because they've only just taken (a polite way of saying half-inched) the direct debit payment. Assuming nothing else comes up, I'll get it done towards the end of this month.

Having used these clowns before, I still have use of my Tiscali Email account.. and received this today.

Email service updateA number of customers have reported that emails sent from their Tiscali email accounts have not been received.

We have identified that the issue was caused by spammers abusing our email service, and it has been our highest priority to resolve this. We believe that the service has been restored for the majority of our customers. Our engineers are continuing to carry out tests to ensure that the service is 100% restored.

If you have sent important emails in the last couple of weeks and are concerned that they may not have been received, we recommend you retrieve the relevant mails from your 'Sent Items' folder and re-send them (Tiscali webmail saves all the email you send automatically, as does other popular email software such as Outlook Express).

There have been no reported problems with incoming mail.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We'll continue to monitor email performance closely to ensure there are no further problems.

Further communication and FAQs will follow later.

Kind regards,

The Tiscali Team
Shouldn't a company of this size have these things in hand especially the amount of time you have been without mail Lofty?

You would have thought so. But remember ths is Tiscali we're talking about. It's not as if I'm actually without mail. Over the last couple of weeks I've started making up a list of the email addresses from messages I've received that are f.a.* to do with me. And here it is:

[email protected]

[email protected]

[email protected]

[email protected]

[email protected]

[email protected]

[email protected]

[email protected]

[email protected]

[email protected]

[email protected]

And those are just the ones where I've bothered checking properties. Most of the junk mail gets shift-deleted as soon as it arrives.

*fanny addams of course. Good ole fanny.

God, I'm having a day of it today..

Can I retract earlier advice?

It now looks 99% likely that I am going to have to swallow my pride and opt for BT for my new broadband provider - always swore blind I wouldn't touch the barstards with a sh*tty stick however they appear to be the best bet in the back water I am moving to.

You're moving to L**ds?!!

Oh, sorry, that'd be 'sh*tty in-bred back water'. My mistake...

For why? And there was me about to phone Tiscali for a MAC code. Well not today, but you know what I mean.

That's one thing I won't be doing. For one thing I haven't even got BT as my phone supplier. I moved to the Post Office a year or so ago and they've been brilliant. Apart from a ?50 signing on discount, they're now introducing free evening and weekend calls from July 1st. And if anyone switches on my recommendation, I get a tenner back and so do they.

OK, lost my post about this so trying again.

Have a look at The Phone Co-op

My neighbour has this for BB and phone and has had no problems and it's quite fast. I suspect that it's cheap too because he's a Yorkshireman and fairly careful with t'money

I have Eclipse BB and have never had a problem with it but it's provided by work so I don't have a clue what sort of price it is

As soon as I clicked on that link, guess what? The little green triangle that is Tiscali's connection Systray icon turned red.

I wonder - is that someone up there trying to tell me something (shhh Tiscali are crap) or is just Tiscali being it's usual rubbish self. Or both.

Eclipse last month charged two lots of monthly usage? I spoke to them and said they said Sorry, we seem to have two accounts open for you as one hadn't been cancelled. Fair enough, I was expecting a months refund, or maybe a free month.

..looked at bank statement, charged me ?75 this month, on an ?18 service with a month still to owe me.

On speaking to them, they said it was for cancellation of ?40, for an secondary account which was set up, in their error??

They then change their story to that of another charge for something their probably making up, as the girl on the phone was useless.

So they have good service, great.. ..but they want paying well for it, at your expense.

Typical, as soon as I write good things about them, this happens.

By the way lofty, pm me info re switching to the PO for home phones, and will make you a tenner up.

Done.

And if anyone else wants to transfer to the Post Office's excellent HomePhone service, I'll be only to glad to help.

So did you get your cash back or does the advice-retraction still stand?

meant to be getting a full credit soon, their service is great, cannot fault that (mind you, I was with Tiscali prior, so wasn't too sure how real broadband was like until now).

Its never good to see your account has paid for an Eclipse night out for no reason, but I guess if I get the refund, I will restore abit more faith.

It was a huge mistake (which sort of originated back to BT), go with who you feel Lofty..
