That post about sums up bates when I meet ossie couple of months before he died he never had one good word to say about him to me perhaps it was a shame that Jim Gregory told bates to f**k off when he was enquiring to buy QPR the club bates supported as for CPO RA could always make me a offer for my shares
I remember Hudson didn't think too much of him either mate....and Hutchinson.

Yeah I knew that Mate ,chopper was the same come to think of it isn't Alan still pissed of with Chelsea even today

that's true mate....but we were a matter of weeks away from defaulting on that loan, a eurobond if I recall correctly.

But yes, we certainly moved forward in terms of the football,,,,as for the stadium, it breaks my heart to see the shedend boxed in and overwhelmed by the hotels,,,a venture that initially drained money away from the club.

He famously claimed not to take a wage from the club, but more then made up for it by claiming outrageous expenses.

It doesn't bear thinking about where we might be now if RA hadn't bought us
Probably would have been bought by Ecclestone. He would have paid off the upcoming Eurobond installment, like RA did, though there wouldn't have been the lavish spending that followed. I think we'd have been pretty secure given the status, assets, revenues etc that we already had when Bates sold up. The major problem in 2003 wasn't the debt so much as the lack of liquidity (ie available cash), hence why we were about to default on the bond repayment. Not ideal but I don't think we were about to do a Leeds either.

We were in a much better position than Bates found us in, hence why we were attractive to Abramovich in the first place.

Ah Husdon that bitter & twisted old piss head, f@ck him he was always quick to slag us off to the press for a quick buck while Bates was fighting our corner.

The trouble with the likes of Husdon was they all thought Chelsea owed them something when in fact they they owed them nothing, players like Chopper Harris fair enough with the amount of games he played ect but he also went running to the press every chance he got & then wondered why Bates told them to f**k off, it'd be like me going back to my old employers & saying " ive pissed all my money away i'm in dire straits any chance of a few quid"? i think we'd all know the answer to that.

Those ex players amongst others were only interested in the club when we started improving & later having success, where were they when we were skint?

Many other clubs who were in dire straits all had past players come to their aid be it fund raising or whatever, where were ours in 82/83? Osgood was on tv moaning that he cant get a free pint down the Kings road anymore ffs.

Osgood was on tv moaning that he cant get a free pint down the Kings road anymore ffs. Thought it was standerd practice that he got free drinks

I can understand the comments about Hudson but Old Chopper No!!! if he speaks we should listen he's got a few bob anyway doesn't need to ponce money

Nice to see you typing Sparky as some one quite rightly said that if ossie was still with use today what ever pub he went in up the north end road I doubt very much if the old north stand boys would allow him to put he's hands in ones pocket of course unless it was Harkins who would expect ossie to buy him free drinks ? Talking of free drinks look forward to catching up with the old north boys this Saturday for our annual piss up

So sorry for not putting the correct grammar and punctuation only these Pound land bins I got are sh*te it not my correct prescription

disgraceful grammar mate, I've got a pair of bins with little LED lights on the side, you should try em, you'll look like a cock mind.Too right about Ossie, can't imagine he would have needed to buy himself a beer

He took on the debt when nobody else did simply really.
well, the club were in debt, that's true....I don't remember Bates personally paying any of it off, although he did take out a lot of loans in the form of bonds against the club....one was a matter of days a way from being called in when RA bought us.

Bates was charging Leeds for his flights from Monaco to Yorkshire by private jet !...

A lot of our current fans are only interested because the club is doing well, so I wouldn't hold that against our ex players blue !

He was still the one to take the chance Not everyones cup of tea but personally I like him met him numerous times was even in he's office. I understand if people don't like him but nobody else stepped in when needed.

Very true stand outside the ground on a match day and ask them metro fans who is Johnny Boyle 80% would reply who the f**k does he play for 10% wouldn't understand the question cos they don't speak English 1% would say he is a Scottish Gangster

Bates is a hero all day and all night long.  No question about it in my mind.  Yes he didn’t buy out debt in the way Roman has but when you have £15 billion the level of investment Roman has made, although still massive to us, is not making him cut out the coupons before popping down to Lidl.

Ken was never in that money league and could never have gone down that same route.  Ken went down the ‘hard bloody work’ route to save our club. Remember his £1 purchase didn’t include the stadium which is the main asset of any club, especially one situated where we are. He knew exactly who was to blame for the mess we were in and he made damn sure they were either removed or sidelined.  Yes he often made enemies and only limited friends but everything he did was done in what he believed was the best interest of the club.  Yes he made mistakes, especially the hotel complex but even that was partially doomed by factors out of anyone’s hand.

Mears stabbed Ken in the back and Ken, as always, did not hold back when he let Mears know what he thought of him.

Ken saved our stadium and that, for me saved our club.

He is a bloody hero in my eyes.
