Wayne Rooney officially the new England captain

What a blistering start of the season for captain flabtastic

Is that meant to be Shrek, an orc, or both? LOL.

Seriously, it's great to see that the English captaincy has gotten the best out of Rooney. He's been playing like a new man...who just gained about 500 kilograms.

I just think that he isn't the right man for the job, hardly the most professional of footballers IMHO. The sad thing is though do we

have many options in out there, I don't think there really is (Cahill, Hart perhaps?).

I guess Rooney's appointment just serves to underline the decline in the national side, not trying to be

provocative but in my opinion the team is not the team of the late 90s or even early 2000s.

Throwing talent level and caps earned out the window, I think Jagielka would be a decent captain. Obviously he hasn't had a stellar start to this season and we probably ruined his confidence for the time being this past weekend but I think he is a decent player and seems to be a good leader.

From all accounts, he is a good professional, and is honest and hardworking (traits that used to be rewarded in football), but he isn't a stellar, high-profile figure like Rooney which seems to warrant the arm band these days.

I've not read other people's views on the Rooney as captain thing nor have I really spoken to any of my mates about it - no-one seems interested, but I just have to share this view with someone and it's you lot that are going to get it.

Rooney is a completely selfish, self-centred numpty of a footballer with some undoubted talent.  That in no way makes him suitable for captaincy let alone to be captain of the national team.

I seem to be one of the only people who think Rooney has matured as a player and a person and is a deserved captain. 3 or 4 years ago, I wouldn't have said that, but I think he is captain material now and a potentially good leader. He actually seems like a nice guy from the interviews I've seen.

The problem with him becoming captain now is that i don't actually think he is that great anymore. Rooney doesn't scare people anymore. He's losing his touch, his passing isn't as great as it used to be, he get's shrugged off the ball easily, he can't beat players and he can't score great goals anymore. The captaincy has basically just guaranteed Rooney years of games for England, no matter how poor he becomes.

^^^^^^

So True and I am SO glad we never signed him. No-one even seems to be able to agree on what his best position is. It's like fit him into the side somewhere because he is Wayne Rooney.

What is it with England in that we always have to build up our players as super stars when they are not even close. Beckham, Gerrard, Rooney......

don't get me wrong, all good players but they are not in the same league as your Messi's, Ronaldo's, Zidane's etc.

The last player we had who could truly turn a game and was at a different level was Gazza. The sooner Rooney is discarded the better.

Rooney's past it and his game has been on the wane ( ) for a while, he's just not the threat that he was up to about 2011. I find it hilarious that United think he's worth paying £300k a week for for the next 5 years.

He's a poor choice for captain for both England and United but the truth is that for the former at least there are no suitable alternatives. Cahill isn't ready yet, Joe Hart is not captain material either. The only other one I can think of is Leighton Baines??

We should appoint Barry or Carrick as 'spiritual captain' of England

The way Rooney is playing at the moment it can be compared to Torres at his worst, he's been that bad so far.
And to think he is on what quarter of a million pounds a week for the next five years. Great news for all except if you support United.

He's probably on the early stages of decline. I know he's young for that to be happening but he really hasn't looked after himself that well over the years. I heard that in either his or Ferguson's autobiography it's mentioned that he used to turn up to preseason like a stone overweight and would go mcdonalds regularly after training. Before anyone jumps on me for saying that I know I'm not the fittest person in the world but I'm also not paid millions a year to keep in top shape. I guess that lifestyle choice combined with all the niggles he's constantly had over the years is finally catching up with him. Time will tell I guess.
