Whats the lowest Chelsea following you've seen?

The "Norwich in the fog" thread reminded me of this one. Foggy night back in the early '70s, maybe '72 or '73 I went straight from work to an evening kick off game at White Hart Lane. And I don't think I saw any other Chelsea fans that night. In fact the only people I knew were a handful of Arsenal fans. We won the game 1-0 and as I said, I didn't see another other Chelsea. I was spotted though, and without going into details, it's no exaggeration to say that I was extremely lucky to get out of there in one piece.

was it not 2-1 to us? I seem to remember that chopper scored a screamer, and that was the only night game around that time apart from the semi final. Agree hardly any chelsea there apart from a very small mob that turned up in the park lane, and that was not even their end anymore, the paxton and the shelf all came round to have a go, embarrasing!

I've just checked (here), and you're right 2-1 it was. That was in 1973-74. It was the season before we won 1-0 at WHL. The 2-1 night game is definitely the one I was thinking of though. It was so foggy that night, and I was so preoccupied in getting away from the sh*thole in one piece, that I wasn't even sure whether or not the match had been abandoned. I'm pretty sure I was at the 72-73 game as well but don't have any specific memory of that one.

the 1-0 game was on match of the day and hollins scored, that day chelsea were in the paxton , a slightly better turnout

Seriously, I wish my memory was half as good as yours. I was 17 at the time of the 73-74 game, for instance, which was before I'd really started drinking heavily, but even so all too much of what happened back then is just a bit of a blur.

the worst turnout though of all time i was going was at west ham in 75, no chelsea there whatsoever, the north bank singing "chelsea where are you" and a three nil defeat, could not work that out as when we played up north loads would turn up but a 15 mile trip and nobody

Well I wouldn't swear I was there, but I do remember seeing us lose at Upton Park a couple of times before we were relegated. I remember there were a few of us there in '81 I think it was, when we lost 4-0. It wasn't exactly a massive mob of Chelsea but we did have a noticeable presence, on the other side of a fence from a far larger mob of West Ham.

that game was the first time we had a mob there since the late sixties, i know some that got run through queens market and never even went to the game, mind you parsons green was only a few years away

Tromso in 97 there were about 200 of us, not many more Tromso fans to be honest cos the town is tiny and it was snowing and frickin freezing.

A mate of mine went to Man City away in the full members cup about 1986/87? we won 2.0 he said we had 54 there most of those were northern blues!

Someone mentioned Hull away in the fa cup in 99, we only had about 600 there but everyone forgets that game was a few days after we took 6,000 to Lazio in the CL & the 3rd rnd was early that season in december.

There was mass crowd disorder that day with the game held up after a pitch invasion, i've got the cutting from that game & it reports on the crowd trouble with Chelsea storming the turnstyles, as i've said to a few West Ham i know who always claim we've never took a mob there, who were West Ham fighting then? themselves yeah righto.

Grimsby away 82/83 season, snowing as well - not a great trip. 400 tops. The main reason being it was the week before Leeds where we had over 10 times that!

manu away midweek league cup around 73.................few hundred at most (lost 2-1)

couple games away to scouse in mid 70's...................very few went up there in those days

and one game away newcastle around 69 (when they were decentish)..............maybe 100 or so

I thought the 1 nil victory at White Hart Lane was when Chopper scored the only Goal and the floodlights failed around 1972? Not many Chelsea as far as I can recall.

A few Arsenal turned up and was with the Chelsea first in the Bell and Hare and then in the Park Lane, the minimal Chelsea who were there left just after the flood lights came back on.

Chelsea headed for Seven Sisters and were persued by minimal Spuds, strange thing only Arsenal fans got picked off by the shops near Bruce Grove.

Nearly 40 years ago, you may remember it, and if you are the man that borrowed my red, green and white scarf at Earls Court against the Spuds can you return it.

1972/73 - we beat Tottenham 1-0 at WHL, Johnny Hollins got the goal

1973-74 - we beat Tottenham 2-1 at WHL, Ron Harris and Micky Droy scoring our goals

Don't remember much about either game, long time ago and lots of beer consumed on the days in question :D

We had one third of the end but thousands of Chelsea couldn't get in. The flyers went out the week before meet in the Kings Head. I got on at Embankment (leaving 2 WHU mates cowering on the platform :laugh2: ) and that was on the first train loaded with those form the Kings Head. That train was rammed full of Chelsea and I was at the front of that lot coming out of UP station and only just made it in the ground. Hence I know for a fact that we had as many who couldn't get in as we had in there.

I can vouch for this as well. I'd been working on a site at St Pauls at the time, went in for a few hours on Saturday morning then bearing in mind our no shows at Upton Park in the past I decided to have a stroll around the London museum at the Barbican for an hour or so before getting on the tube lateish and keeping my head down. Couldn't believe it when I got there to find the South Bank turnstiles closed, had to stand on the North Bank watching us get spanked 4-0 and trying to not look too upset, bad day on the whole.

Great newspaper clippings Carshalton. After that game they tended to give us the whole end.

As for the original thread title, the lowest turnout I was ever in was a nondescript league game at Grimsby late in the season when our following numbered 300-400.
