rather then buying anelka,Berbatov or Ronaldinho....why wont we buy Benzema,Kompany or a FUTURE STAR!!!they wont cause much and we wont have to waste our money!!!

Now Avi has been given a transfer budget in January and we desperately need to strenghten our forward-line, where is the unearthed gem he has had his eye on for a couple of years. Which players career has he been tracking with interest in the hope he could one day sign him. What players caught his eye a few years ago that Grant wanted to manage and nurture their ability. I give you world football and premiership journey man Nicholas Anelka. Now don't get me wrong I think it's a sensible transfer, but it's hardly your uncut diamond is it?

At the moment we need to strengthen the squad, not think about the future too much. We've got youngsters coming. Sahar, Sinclar, Mancienne etc.

And I wouldn't say that the youngsters won't cost us much. Pato cost alot and I seriously doubt Lyon would let Benzema leave for nothing.

These are players who are good and will probably be good for another 10 years or so. In other words they are players you don't get cheap.

Ivanovic wasn't that cheap and I don't think Santo was either.

I don't want to think about the amount of cash we would have to spend if we wanted to but Messi.

I understand your sentiments, but the other side is that we needed someone who can come straight into a (top) Premiership team and start scoring immediately, with no settling in period, and ideally is available to play in the Champions League. Personally I'd have thought that Berbatov would have suited our style better, but then again he'd have cost £30M.

Our scouting network for "undiscovered potential" does seem pretty awful though!

i think if you wait a year or two you might be pleasantly surprised. take a look at the ressies and youth team sometime. plenty of potential there.

in comparison with who? Jose, oh you mean drogba, who he wanted to sighn for porto, well not so hidden because apparently wenger wanted him first... every manager will claim they saw a player before he was big new's easiest thing in the world to do, who's going to say different.

Anelka is the right player at the right time, makes secnce... be it an easy one, there is still time for the "hidden gems" to crop up, incedently arnt there another 2 players (that ive never heard of) that we are supposed to pretty much have wrapped up?

Just to add, not a masive grant fan my self.. dont think he's up to challenging wenger and fergi.. but your vendeter againts the man... its just mean!!

Holy smoke - can you imagine the abuse Grant would have got if two years it transpired he was keeping an eye out for potential players for the club. We would have had 'He should keep his nose out of Jose's business' and 'He's just Roman's mate, he would do well to remember that'

Now he is criticised for not sticking his oar in where it isn't welcome.

Do you honestly believe that a younster would be able to come in to a match on saturday like us versus tottenspam and doing anything? I think most Jan Transfers for us would hvae to have been a proven player, lets not forget our other 2 signings are younger players

To be fair, I believe we are ALWAYS looking out for the best young players around the world that become available. However, they certainly aren't cheap, and they tend to take a bit more convincing (more than just money) because they have so many options (who wouldn't want the next van Basten or Ronaldinho?). I think the Alex Pato case would have waken us up a bit. Now that is a signing I would have expected Chelsea to make but Milan beat us to him, putting us fair in our place. When push comes to shove, I also wonder if Huntelaar would choose us or Man Utd.

I believe we do have some promising youngsters in our ranks already but it will take 4-5 years for them to step up and be ready to deliver. We needed to strengthen immediately this January and Anelka is a wonderful signing. I mean, this is as exciting as it gets, and he is at the peak of his powers. We really can expect everything from him, and now.

We're going after Geovanni, it seems, but so are a host of others so it remains to be seen if we are successful. As I said, everyone wants the next best thing, and we are no different.

A little surprised that you would have expected us to sign Pato ahead of Milan. There is a massive track record of young South Americans going to Serie A whereas in the UK our record with South Americans (be they young or otherwise) is very patchy. There is so much about Italy that would be comforting for a South American player compared to the British culture that we are always going to struggle to beat clubs like Milan when it comes to competing for the top young talent.

well we don't sign youngsters because that's what a youth academy is for..

and if we had gotten Pato he would only be a sub, not a starter, he's better with Milan. ANyone see him yesterday, he was amazing. And also the fact that he got a goal on his debut, so did quite well.

Sorry got caried away there on Pato....but he's gonna be great.

I really don't see how anyone could interpret missing out on Pato as a failure on our part.

As others have pointed out, Milan (and other large Italian and Spanish clubs) have a long history of nurturing South American talent and the Premiership doesn't.

He will have seen how someone like Kaka has come through the ranks and would want to do the same thing.

Hopefully showing a bit of faith in the likes of Mikel and Kalou, and watching them develop into world-class players will go a long way towards us being the club of choice for the next-big-things out there.

The trouble with us as fans at the moment is that if any player (in particular youngsters) have a below-par game, there are pretty much always calls for them to be dropped, or sometimes even sold. If we ever want to be known as a club that develops youngsters, we will have to lose this attitude.

No, I did not expect that we would have beat Milan to his signature, nor do I consider our losing out to Milan to be a failure on our part. Despite our relative success and our growing status, as well as our location, we are not yet the most attractive prospect to the best young players out there. That will take more time.

My argument is that we ARE in fact looking to sign the best youngsters all the time, BUT it isn't as easy as just out-bidding the opposition. As you said, these kids need more than just a financial incentive. At the early stage of their careers, they need things like fellow foreigners of the same nationality (or region/continent) who could help them feel more at home, etc...

You know, the manager also has a big part to play. I won't criticize Grant because I could not do that fairly as I do not know him personally, and he could of course be the most charming man in person. However, I do know that Jose Mourinho had a lot of pulling power amongst the younger generation and if he were still here with us I believe we would be seeing the signings of some pretty interesting young players.

Anyway, we might still do but I maintain it is not as easy at it seems.

I tend to disagree with you (for once) there Butch.

I actually think Mourinho's authoriative style of management and generally defensive tactics made us less attractive to the likes of Pato.

I agree with qaz. I also think that Jose didn't realy like young players all that much. we would never sign a pato, kerlon or Renato Augusto with him in charge. they are too unpredictable and risky
