I can understand why he did it, but rules state that you can't!!!!! - They broke the rules but will they be punished? No!!! He complain about the fixtures over Xmas and get away with it.......

Lets hope Pompey play their reserves tonight, or hope they do worse than Evertons reserves did at the weekend.

What surprises me about what Mick did was the lack of ambition and belief that must surely put doubts in his players heads,

If I was a Manager and sent a team out that was obviously not as good as the opposition but had managed to play good enough football to get itself up into the best league and on the back of a very credible result I would be excited at pitting my wits against the best and trying evrything I had ever learned to get a result,

I would make sure I picked my best side and I would be talking up theire last performance hoping to give them the confidence they could do it again,

I would mention they had beaten a team who had hammered a team who had beaten this years likely Champions.

I can't see the thinking of striving to be in the top division just to play your best side against the teams that are not much different to they had been meeting in the Championship.

I doubt Wolves would have got anything from the game but I remember the days when I doubted we would..but watching our best players get up for the big games was one of the best things about it.

Imagine being a Wolves player and playing quite well just to be dropped for a game where you could be playing against some of the best?

I wonder if the shirt sponsors would have been happy,

Wolves isn't the sort of team that has enough width to play their second choice lineup against the likes of ManU, so although the players didn't willingly gift points to ManU, but the starting lineup clearly indicates just how seriously the manager took the game and I'm sure some of the players must have noticed this. I don't know if the players let it affect their game, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. The manager might as well have said to his players: "it doesn't matter if we lose, just go have fun", because that's basically the message he sent out with his starting lineup.

I'm astonished that so many of you guys sympathise with mick McCarthy's decision. This happened a couple of years ago on 2-3 occasions (I can't remember which teams) but they got away with it, so I'd be surprised if Wolves get punished.

I just pray to God that it backfires and at the end of the season a team does similar when playing against a relegation candidate, lose the match and as a result Wolves are relegated. Big Mick would not be happy, but it would be justice.

I agree with you 100%. Resting a couple of key players may be justified but he just took the piss. If they had fielded a strong side they could have nicked a point, what with the injury problems United have at the moment. Mick McCarthy just showed contempt for the rules.

I think it was West Brom that did it a couple of times a few years ago. Going back to times gone by I remember Leeds getting hit with a hefty

fine in 1970 when they fielded a reserve team against Derby , they at the time were going for 3 trophies, lost the game 4-1 and ended up winning nowt.

Man Utd did it last season against Hull on the final day of the season du to the fact their next game was the CL final. They put out a team that was barely potty trained.

The Premier league did nothing about it then which means if they try and do anything to Wolves their lawyers can use the Utd situation as a precedent.

I 've had time to think about this and what Mcarthy did was tantamount to cheating. The season is 38 games long, not 38 for everyone and 37 for Utd, like Wenger has said.

What if Spurs miss out on a CL place by 1 point, because Wolves played a decent side against them but put out a sh*te side against Villa or Man City? What if we were to miss out on the title because Wolves play their strongest team when we go to Molineaux but they play a side with only 41 premiership games experience (like they did at Old Trafford) between them when they play Utd?

If managers start picking and choosing which games to compete in, (not win or lose - but compete) then football is a complete waste of time, they may aswell split the league in two to make it competitive again!! The beauty of Burnley beating Utd earlier in the season. Wolves beating Spurs away is the magic that makes supporting a football club, as soon as the underdog stops trying we may aswell pack it in! Last one out turn the lights off!!!!!

If Hull hadn't have beaten Arsenal at Highbury, Spurs at WHL and got a draw at Stamford bridge last season they would have been relegated, they didn't stay up because Utd fielded a weakened side on the last day of the season!!!!

I hope Wolves get spanked against Burnley, and are relegated because we field a sh*t team against a side who needs to win to stay up in the latter stages of the season (poetic justice) - because the FA will do nothing apart from sending them a strong letter!

thats the main point of worry for me. why not just ask managers which games they are going to bother with this season and just play them, awarding a 3-0 win for the games they feel they cant compete in.

Can you imagine what Fergie would have said if they'd (wolves) have put that side out against us and Utd played a full strength Pompey side. We'd never hear the last of it!!!

But your comparing Carling Cup matches to Premiership matches, yes it's been happening in the Carling Cup for ages, and look what its done to it, the first football trophy to be labeled a Mickey Mouse cup, it's been happening in the FA cup as well, but not at the same level. mainly because of the FA cup's presitgous history.

If other managers take Macarthys and Fergies lead, we could end up with a 2 tier division, the real Premier league, and the 'mickey mouse' league.

Just to add, what Manu, Arsenal and even us more recently have done in the league cup has no doubt weakened the competition. Surely the same thing will happen in the league if managers pick which games they're willing to have a go at.

I understand the reasons for a squads and rotation, but to change your first 11 with a team that has less than 40 prem matches between them is a f*cking disgrace and isn't rotating a squad, but playing your reserves/combination team!
