World Cup 2014 - Match day 8

So much of the talk at this World Cup has been about rooney not performing for England...while he is not as good as the hype suggested over past 10 years, 40 goals, albeit mainly in qualifiers, is still worthy of a bit of respect...I would argue that in over 100 caps, Gerrard has rarely done anything for England...never performed at a major tournament and I can't remember him having much of an impact since the false dawn that was the 5-1 win over Germany in 2001...while lamps has also struggled to convert club form into England stage, I can remember him having a good tournament at euro 2004 at least....Gerrard did a bad back pass to set up Henry back then and 10 years later he's still a liability, protected by the armband he inherited by default from jt and the media love in

Baines doesn't deserve all the sh*t he's getting.

He's an attacking full back. He was brought to bring England attacking flair. He's not known for his defensive abilities. Roy thought we would be able to offer him more chances to attack. In hindsight, Cole would have been the better option, no doubt. He looked OK yesterday. It's more the fault of the mid fielders who are unable to keep the ball.

Bring in Wilshere for Gerrard and go again against Costa Rica. We'll need to score a few goals if we have any hope of going through now.

Before anyone reacts too harshly towards Hodgson - look what happened to one of his predecessors, a very talented and tactically astute manager who has been completely chewed up and eviscerated by the media machine. Look at him now:

He's a bloody full back, defending is his primary job and he should be at least good at it. Of course he deserves sh*t for it, he just watched Suarez walk into the area and didn't even move. As for his attacking, he did nothing over 2 games.

As if England's humiliation wasn't complete... even Emile Heskey is sticking the boot in:

"I can't see it. It's out of our hands now. We are clutching at straws. Costa Rica are capable of getting a draw, they looked lively in their first game, Joel Campbell in particular.

It is a big surprise that England are in this position. Before the tournament, I thought we had enough to win the first game - against Italy - and get a draw with Uruguay. So it's major disappointment."

Expect that's not how he was portrayed. He was being mentioned as one of the top fullbacks in the world, stats were shown that seemed to suggest he was better than Cole defensively, etc.

I'm glad he's getting sh*t, he's extrememly overrated and needs to be taken down a peg or two.

Baines is supposed to be 'the modern fullback' who is balanced between attacking AND defending, he hardly offers a strong attacking ability like Dani Alves.

Hodgson had a choice of calling up Cole and JT but he didn't and it cost us the chance of even making the knockout stage, surely it should cost him his job.

Some say hodgson made strong decisions by leaving them out...actually it was the opposite given the media agenda against both cole and Jt...a strong manager would pick his strongest side and not be dictated to by anyone else...instead he tried to pander to the affections of the common idiot...can you imagine another country leaving their two best defenders at home...they must be shaking their heads in disbelief or in Italy and Uruguays case, laughing at us...I remember Maldini before the tournament admitting he couldn't believe Cole was left out

Now this is a real pro...take note Hodgson, fa and all those chelsea youth players thinking they've made it

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/worldcup2014/article-2663553/John-Terry-shows-England-missing-throwing-punches-Luis-Suarez-double-defeat.html

Wonder who he was thinking of as he let fly with those punches and kicks...many candidates...the ferdinands, triesmann, the fa, Hodgson, the media, Benitez, Wayne bridge..etc
Yesterday on his instagram account JT put up a photo of himself from an England match with the captain's armband on.

Giving everyone a hint at what they was missing I think.

god forbid we expect our defenders to defend

come to think of it I didn't see much evidence of his attacking flair either.

Joe Hart has been poor too.

He's not all that.
Has he even made a save from a shot yet ?

I think Baines is getting of lightly for that first goal, it was his job to fill in behind Jagielka when he saw Suarez set off but just stood around watching. I guarantee Cole would have tracked that runa nd his header would at least have been made under pressure from the full back.
I think Baines is average. Everton is the highest level he can reach. The guy is known for his crossing and set pieces and he didn't get a single decent ball into the area, he bottled it. I would rather have gone with Shaw, he literally couldn't have done any worse and it would give him some experience.

Henry Seedorf and Hansen going over the defeat last night, comes to the second goal and not a mention of Stevie G.

If I were Henry, I'd bring up the couple of goals he had scored anticipating Gerrard's errors.

Teflon Stevie thou shan't question him.

Unbelievable wasn't it, not one single mention of him. By the start of next season we will be told by the media and scousers he was our best player at the world cup, like last time.

Lots of accurate comments here re. Gerrard. I listened to 606 for a bit last night and comments about Gerrard were generally washed over. I think the issue is that the media has cast Gerrard as a stout, loyal yeoman type and, despite the reality not matching that typecasting, they are sticking to that script.

The thought of Gerrard one day being on MOTD as a 'pundit' is awful.
