On the whole I thought we were pretty average, if you take Sturridge and Sterling out of that team we wouldn't have gotten close to scoring a goal, the players around them were anonymous.

Our midfield pairing is woeful, Gerrard walking around the field completely disinterested until he gets the opportunity to boot the ball 60 yards up the field for the cameras, Henderson running around the field doing his best but ultimately the workload of 2 people was way beyond him.

Unfortunately when the only alternative is an unfit Wilshere who was even worse when he came on, we have no choice. We desperately need a quality CM to come through somewhere.

Funny how no-one in the media is commenting on how sh*t Gerrard was. He was a complete non-entity. Offered nothing defensively, and nothing offensively. Useless.
I've been listening to Radio 5 for a while and he's not been mentioned. He's got some magic get out of gaol card.

Seems to be forgotten that Italy hit the woodwork twice, had another effort cleared off the line and were destroying us on our left flank time and time again...

That game reminded me of the kind we see at the bridge every year where a lower plucky team comes, has a few shots, but know our extra quality will always prove too good...Italy looked like they had that extra gear to go to if required

Agreed. Italy were happy for england to shoot from 30 yards and never really pressed them. They always looked in control it's no coincidence that when england scored the italians stepped it up and dominated the next 20 minutes until they scored again and relaxed.

If that was a positive team performance from england then what does a poor one look like?

Listening to some pundits i feel i watched a different game last evening. I agree (with the pundits) that the first half was positive and the young players mostly good but i can't take much positive from the second half. I hate being this down on England.

Our euro 2012 quarter final for a start and I think that's the misleading thing...just because we had a few more shots ( like you said mostly from outside the area) than we did two years ago and our expectations were so low to begin with, it has led to an overly positive outlook from some...but if you think with your head and not your heart, we were not good enough again...better, but still a long way short...put it this way, if chelsea had lost a game like that, few on here would argue about the calibre of performance....I want England to win and be much better than they are...see no reason to be cheerful about a plucky defeat, especially as we're already staring elimination in the face

You're easily pleased...we have no chance If we defend like this
Uruguay's defending was a lot worse than ours yesterday, as was most of the teams defenses who have played so far. We can get out of this group if we play like we did in the first half, there was some very good build up play in our attacks and if it wasn't for Rooney's miss we would have got a draw. I thought it was a very even game throughout.

bo**ocks.

Best time I've seen England play for a long time. Up against one of the best midfield's in the tournament, we did ourselves reasonably proud.
Apart from Baines i thought everyone played a decent to very good game. Baines was constantly caught out defensively and his crossing, something he is known for, was terrible. I honestly thought that everything he did Cole could have done better. I am pretty sure Cole wouldn't expose himself like Baines did for their second goal. If Baines just holds his ground instead jumping about 4ft to the side he would have stopped that cross coming in and stopped them from scoring the 2nd goal.

Our attack was very good until the changes in my opinion, once the changes were made we went off the boil and didn't really know what to do. But for the first hour i thought it was an even game and it's the first time i have seen England play well since the Poland game.

We can get out of this group i am sure of it, but we need people like Rooney to take the chances when they come instead of wasting them.

I am a lot more optimistic than i was when i was watching us in the friendlies that's for sure.

Indeed he some really good stuff, too many spoilt shuts these days
This is the World Cup supposedly the best of the best players from around the world on display, yeah ok Welbeck had his moments yesterday and I may have been a bit harsh but having moments, just like Rooney had his moment, doesn't cut it at this level you need to be able to play at your very best all the time, over a very short period of time for what 7 games, that is what determines a good player from a great player during the tournament.  The future looks good for England but Gerrard, Rooney and Johnson and possibly Baines after that showing need to go.  The cream rises to the top and we will no doubt see more magic from the very best as the tournament progresses.

Well there's no doubt Walcott would be playing if fit but he isn't so Welbeck starts

As a miserable old sod, I hope you're proved right and I'm proved wrong

Am I the only one  who got up in the middle of the night to watch Drogba?

Nope, that was another good game. I thought Japan were in control until Drogba come on. As soon as he came on Japan shat themselves
