X Factor 2009

This is exactly why very rarely watch anything on TV except football and the news. I choose to watch old programmes. Tonight I've watched another episode of The Saint, and one of Dad's Army. Last night I watched episode two of Michael Palin's Pole to Pole and an episode from series one of The Mod Squad, a classy US detective series from the '60s, that starred Peggy Lipton who went on to play Norma Jennings in Twin Peaks.

Not that all modern TV is rubbish. Series such as The Sopranos, The Wire and so on are excellent, of course, but these I'll tend to catch up on following a recommendation. What I won't do is waste my time on any kind of celebrity novelty or reality TV or bargain basement no-talent TV dross.

It's all about the choices you make.

I'm a Strictly Come Dancing man myself.

As Tim rightly pointed out, television has always hosted talent shows. The X Factor, American Idol and all the others are just the modern incarnations of an age old tradition. It's all a bit more OTT these days but I don't see the harm myself. If you like it then watch if not there are plenty of other things to watch or not.

What I do really hate are the "reality" shows which don't seem to have any justifiable reason for being other than to satisfy the Wenger voyeur in us.

Good post on that Attenborough programme Loz - thats what television should be about, entertaining aswell as informative, thought provoking and educational. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Some amazing footage shown last night.

I went past a village pub today with a board outside telling people they should come and watch the X factor live Saturday night !! If I go out on a Saturday night it would be to avoid the X factor at all costs

Saw the programme 'Life' last night and it made for compelling TV. Some of the camerawork was outstanding with the level of detail they were able to get. I never fail to learn something new when I watch programmes like this. Can't say I learn anything new from watching 'reality' (what's real about them?) shows.

You surely afforded yourself a sick smirk when the 'Happy Feet' sketch quickly became 'Jaws' when the leopard seal appeared out of nowhere.

Now one of the judges, who's had a career manufactured by the show, and continues to, will be performing her new single at the weekend.....oh but she won't be singing.

Just show's it up for what it really is. A stage managed, manipulitive, production where talent is second best to looks, glitz, glamour and image. What happend to the fat girl who won it a few years ago.......nowhere to be seen because her ass isn't as nice as Cheryl's, but could she sing....doesn't relly matter does it? The sad thing is that a majority of people who go to see this kind of act don't see anything wrong with the performer miming and doing a few dance steps through their routine.

All the BBC nature stuff, Discovery Channel content, all good. Plus some of what I call reality TV: The Real A&E and other such programmes.

No soaps allowed in this household (although the missus does like that "Ghost Whisperer" sh*te).

Everything else is rubbish!

X Factor and Teen Idol, or whatever they are all called...are similarly commercialized out in the states. It's a brilliant marketing ploy by Cowell, but that is all I'll ever say that is good about that man
