Xabi Alonso - New Chelsea Manager

Looks like to is a choice between keeping Alonso and losing Estevao sooner than expected, or changing the manager.

If rather have Liam back and Estevao playing than keep Alonso.
Rosenior back, are you mad! At least with Alonso I still have a glimmer of hope he can do something with our awful squad. With Rosenior I know he can't.

I hate how I know this team now. When they got it back to 1-1, there was no tension in the game anymore for me. You just know with 100% certainty we will not win the game, we just dont have the mentality to win. How much of this is on Alonso I'm not sure, too many of our players are just not good enough. Mentally, technically and physically. Alonso will have to take the blame for hounding Estevao out of the club though, how our wunderkinds Estevao and Quenda doesn't get on the pitch in a game like this is piss poor management at best. Henderson as our furthest forward player through much of the game is just not it. Despite all of that, we can't restart now. Not again. We have to hope he can get it right and for the love of god - just make it easier for yourself and integrate Estevao again
It's not down to Alonso. That feeling of not being capable of overturning a game has been happening since BlueCo bought the club. No matter who the coach was, Pochettino, Potter, Maresca, Rosenior, Alonso, the mentality of the club has changed and the winning mentality has been substituted by a frail, losing mentality. The ball is on the board, I'm not sure how those losers have become billionaires with that mentality!

This.

It's why we have to ride this out and hope the ownership actually follows through on everything they claimed. The self‑reflection, the change in approach, and the consistency they showed in the last summer window. And that includes the internal changes: directors, staff, anyone tied to the old mess. If they don’t fix the people making the decisions, nothing changes on the pitch.

Because when your own Cobham graduate and captain, someone who knows what it means to play Spurs, walks off after that embarrassing defeat and tells the home fans, “It’s just one game,” and allegedly "what you moaning about?" you can see the rot goes deeper than the manager. That’s cultural. That’s institutional. Terry would still be apologizing today if something like that happened in his era.

It'll take a very long time, and not just a few months, to attempt to reverse the destruction caused by the previous 4 years of this ownership.
It's almost a hopeless task, at the moment all I want is to watch Chelsea playing some good football, which we've managed to do in some of our games this season.
Surely we can't keep on getting rid of managers, this one needs time , a few good games doesn't make him a genius just as a few sh*te games doesn't make him useless does it ?

Anyway, as always,

Come on you BLUES !

It is not what I really want. My point was at least Liam used Estevao, and I don't want him pushed out by lack of play time and leaving sooner than sporting ambition makes him do so.

Seriously? No one player is bigger than the club and we have to back the coach for now. We shouldn't be coming across like Ronaldo fan-boys because their star-man isn't playing.

It is frustrating that Estevao is getting so little game time, especially last night, but Alonso must have his reasons and he knows that he will look incredibly silly if he continues to leave Estevao out and we keep losing games.

Alonso does not help himself, either. I feel he complicates things in ways that confuses everybody. One thing I was worried about since the beginning was when he kept talking about Palestra being versatile and ready to slot at left back/left wing back. Although he is a natural right back and won the Serie A Defender of the season playing as a right back for Cagliari. Also the role Inter wanted to buy him for. Ever since coming here I think he only played on a friendly match at right back/right wing back, other than that Alonso always brought him in from the bench at left back/left wing back.

Neto at right wing back. A two man midfield that will never work in the PL. Estevao on the bench. I mean Alonso should understand by now that this 5-2-3 is not working and does not have the players to replicate his Leverkusen side.

I believe any decent manager in this world, when looking at the Chelsea squad, would instantly pick his starting line-up by putting Rogers, Palmer, Estevao behind Joao Pedro and build from there. A 4-2-3-1 feels the most suited to this squad, with Caicedo and Lavia/James in midfield. Palestra at right back, Hato/Chavarria on the left and Lacroix and Colwill the center backs. Everybody in his natural position. The current tactics not only do not work, but are also confusing and inviting way too much pressure. Simply put not a good fit for this squad in a million years.

Not that simple when you consider this squad has averaged conceding 2 goals a game since January, and a midfield that has more holes than Swiss cheese.

Said it a while back, but I truly think Alonso is under the same school of thought as Arteta in setting up a team's foundation. Defence first.

Yes, seriously.

There is very little about this walking corpse of Chelsea Football Club to take enjoyment out of since BlueCo butchered everything Roman worked so hard to build on the foundation Bates and Harding left him.

One is Estevao, a player I believe could reach the levels of Hazard. Brilliant to watch, gets you out of your seat, and you can actually see cares.

What Alonso is doing with him is the biggest issue I have with him.

Bloody awful job he has done with that. One clean sheet, and that was more thanks to how useless Barry and Evertons forwards are.

And now he will have Fofana in for Lacroix for a bit too. Probably best he goes the Kevin Keagan route, cause that back line is going to leak even more.

Nothing wrong with that, but it should not be at the expense of looking so unbalanced in every other area of the pitch. This current formation relies solely on the mood of Rogers, Palmer and Joao Pedro. Other than that it's a bunch of other 7 players behind them aligned in a very confusing, unbalanced, uninspiring and at the same time chaotic way. At least this is how I see it.

I agree. The bigger issue we have at the moment is not the manager but the ownership. Not much we can do about that, and I don't think a change of manager will help much. Bear in mind that any change would be handled by the same group that have made some pretty disastrous appointments the last few years. Alonso has much to learn but I feel like he has the potential to improve given time.
Like several others, my main frustration with Alonso is the lack of playing time offered to Estevao. Especially given players out through injury/suspension. But it is unclear whether this is a personal issue between Alonso and Estevao, or perhaps something being driven from the SD's. It could be that they already plan to offload him to PSG and are protecting their "asset" until then.

I do get it. I've been there when a player I loved to watch wasn't getting the game time they deserved (Nevin under Hollins - Joey Cole under Mourinho).

And yes, Estevao should have more minutes, no doubt about it. But right now he isn't prime Hazard or even close (and for the record, I don't think he will get anywhere near that level). It is down to him to apply and prove himself and make it impossible for Alonso to leave him out.

Very underwhelming so far, and light years away from what I thought we were getting after his Bundesliga exploits ... early days I suppose, but the signs, body language etc aren't great.

He needs minutes or the pitch to do so, with the few good players we have not bums like Fofana and Gusto.

Neither of us see training, my belief of the young man he has shown to be so far is Estevao would be working hard in training, I just cannot see him not, seems a very driven young man.

20 years ago, Nibs wasn't saying this about Joe Cole
