ALEX: I CAN PLAY Following yesterday's news that he will start at Birmingham this afternoon, Alex has been explaining the situation with his knee injury.
The defender has not played for Chelsea since our defeat at Anfield a fortnight ago, and on Tuesday it was revealed that he requires arthroscopic surgery on his right knee which will keep him out for between six and eight weeks. A day later, he was on the bench for Brazil in Qatar, and will now line up this afternoon at St. Andrew's.
So has there been a miraculous recovery, or is it a case of simply managing the injury effectively? Sadly for Chelsea fans, the operation is still required but the defender's presence in the backline this afternoon comes as a major boost.
'I need surgery, and maybe after the game I will go to Brazil and do the operation on Thursday', he told the official Chelsea website. 'Arthroscopic surgery is easy to do, and I can play on Saturday to help the team. We have too many players injured, so I said to the coach I can play. I am not 100 percent fit but I can play.'I have to say "thank you" to the medical staff, they always help me so much and call me, give me treatment or help me in the gym and swimming pool, and it helps so much.'
The former PSV man was able to train in the lead-up to this weekend's game, and he reports positively on his condition.
'On the training pitch it is good, no problem, I have done some light sessions, I trained on Friday and it is okay, I am ready to help my team and to help them win. It is an important game for us, a difficult game, and we need to win.
'It is important we stay compact in defence and work well, important we don't concede goals and get forward to score goals.'
No doubt he will have been chatting with defensive partner Branislav Ivanovic on how best to cope with the Serbian's international team-mate, 6ft 8in striker Nikola Zigic.
'We will have to mark him very well, we have Iva, me, Didier can come at corners, so it will be difficult but we will stay close and not give him any space,' Alex said.
He may give a few inches away in height, and not quite be firing on all cylinders, but there is no doubt Alex will have made sure Zigic knows he has been in a game by 5pm this afternoon.
