Drogba once again confirms June departure

I don't like him as a person, but as a footballer he really is something special. Obviously I would like him to stay, but as many have said, if he is intent on going, 30-40 mill would be very good business.

What HAS p*ssed me off though, is this constant reiteration that he is keen to leave, which effecgtively puts us over a barrel when it comes to negotiating a sale price, and will almost certainly mean we end up with less.

This club has a lot to thank Didier for, but he should also show a LOT more respect for a club that helped make him the world star he is, and keep his mouth shut.

I think it'll be closer to the £40m mentioned previously than it will £20m, purely because of how (as mad_mac mentioned) he keeps playing for us - if he wasn't putting in much effort (ala Ronaldinho) then the club would be more pressed to get rid of him, and people willing to pay less - but when they're playing as well as Drogba is I feel it'll keep the price high. The only way I can see his value dropping is if he comes back from the ACN not really bothered about Chelsea.
I agree, still think £40 million is a little overboard for a 30? year old striker.

Drogba for me is a great team player, fabulous footballer and fitted in with Mourinho's system perfectly and they had trust in one another, so his repeated comments now about wanting to leave don't really shock me anymore. He works his arse off for this team so frankly I don't actually care what he says as long as when he steps on that pitch he gives 100% of himself that is all I expect of any player not their life blood.

I guess the departure of Jose just accelerated what was already an idea he had and had mentioned before publicly then denied or backtracked.

Grant said he was looking towards the long term not just the short term with purchases this January. I think someone said they had heard from sources that when Drogba first spoke out Roman went ballistic and it was agreed that if he kept quiet and kept working then they would agree on a move next summer for him. I don't think anything is going to change his mind, he was obviously really upset when Mourinho left, I read the whole interview (old one) and it was pretty obvious he was seriously pi**ed off with what happened, coupled with his past comments and current ones I would be shocked if he was still with us this time next season. Grant must know this so he has to think on getting not one but two replacement strikers of top quality on board in preparation.

I think he will go for about £35 million in the end - if we get £40 I would be amazed.

As for legendary status that word is used to easily in this day and age, I doubt any player with us can be called a legend yet surely?

Maldini at Milan is someone who would come as being close to a legend (or will be seen as one) actually still playing for a team.

Do we really have a Maldini (in terms of achievements and length of service) with us right now?

I'm just not sure that anyone in the current team can be labelled a "legend".

I'd throw Joe Cole's name into the hat with Lamps and JT on the 'fast track to potential legendary status'. Oh, and Carlo too. For many reasons.
Joe Cole? Seriously? Based on what? a few step overs? a london accent?

Do me a favour.

I'd take Drogba over Joey any day of the week.

Don't get me wrong - I wish players wouldn't wash their dirty laundry in public - but Drogba has never been less than 100% committed on the pitch.

Interesting to see that he was given the captain's armband when he came on - and that he didn't give it to Ballack when he came on! I've always maintained that Drogba is a real leader amongst the players and he would be my first choice for captain when JT is out.

The sight of him up front for us on Saturday just reminded me of what we are going to be missing over the next few weeks. I just hope that we are able to keep him in the summer, unlikely as that seems.

By sacking Jose we've lost one of his generals on the pitch.

Recently voted BEST striker in the world and BEST African striker means we are losing the best in the business. He said he was leaving when Jose went and has stood by it. He doesn't want to play for Avi at the circus anymore and who can blame him really?

Replace one of the best managers in world football with kit man from Pompey, ''no I think I'll find another club'' his affiliation was with the previous manager not the club.

''Id go to any war with you by my side'' was something he'd said the JM.

As for the legend status, there are not many who can claim scoring winning goals for us in 2 finals (last season), although for me his acheivements will always be overshadowded by other elemants, ala Frank LeBouf

On the pitch Drogba is a fantastic footballer, that works hard for the team and when in top form is virtually unplayable. His input in our success in the last few years was huge and is widely acknowledged.

Off the pitch more often than not he acts like a self serving twat with vastly oversized ego.

You can talk all you want about his close bond with the 'general of the pitch' but the truth is he wanted out since day one. It's touching that he felt so deep about his debt to Mourinho but what about the club that paid his wages, cured his injuries and stood by him during his first two seasons in London when he was more known for his diving and rolling around on the floor then his footballing ability? What about the fans that have supported him all this time? Don't we all deserve a bit of respect and gratitude? When he mouths off to the press for the hundredth time on how he wants out of Chelsea don't you think he knows how it affects the club and support?

I think he does, and i don't think he gives a f..k. Chelsea legend? Don't make me laugh.

We need to sell him and get the highest possible price, not let what happened in Gallasgate happen again.

1.Make sure he leaves the premiership.

2.Get the highest possible transfer deal for CFC.

3.Buy a striker that will keep his gob shut in return for riches.

So that would quite effectively rule out Anelka...

Anelka has made a career of it, funnily enough we're looking at him as DD's replacement

As for the unhappy players mouthing off,etc....the club should have thought of all this prior to sacking the previous manager (conveniently) after the transfer window was firmly shut, otherwise DD and a couple of others would be plying their trade elsewhere already IMHO

Perhaps we should make it official club policy? Let's clarify the situation once and for all and have it written into player's contracts.

Any player who mouths off publically to the press about:

1. Not being happy because I'm being played out of position.

2. Not being played.

3. Not being happy with the manager.

4. Not being happy.

5. His wife not being happy.

6. Not being happy with contract negotiations.

7. Not being happy with the pay.

8. Not being happy with the pies in the canteen.

Will immediately be sold by the club.

So, over recent years, that's thank you very much and goodnight to:

Frank Le Beef, JFH (no:8 on the list), Arjen Robben, Drogba, Gallas, Carvalho, Crespo, JT, Petit and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head.

And if you want to go further back in history you can add Ossie and Hudson to the list too!

24 carrot

Will he go ? It will mean that chelski will play a less direct form of the game.

That good? - Pls comment

I don't buy that arguement.

We play better with him in the side, as recent performances have shown!

Also all this 'long ball up to Drogba' is a myth and only 1 variation of our play. Remember he scored more goals last season than previously and he wasn't playing up front on his own in a 4-3-3

If we do play 1 up front, you'd have to go someway to find someone better than Dorgba at it.

Too much attention is paid to our lack of style, good sides have a variation, when we lose DD our options will be reduced, unless we go for an exact replacement, who that would be I have no idea.

Losing the recently voted 'best forward in the world' will not improve our side, style, or variation of play.

Another question worth asking: would the premiership free flowing football machine that is 'the entertaining Arsenal' like him playing for them? - you bet!!

There was a period when I agree, we were playing to many long balls to Drogba - both Cech and our defenders were continually looking for him and were often bypassing our midfield - certainly during Mourinho's latter days. But I don't think we have so much recently and at the moment, we are missing Drogba hugely.

Not just for his forward play but defensively on set pieces.

But no player is irreplaceable. He would leave a huge void but as long as replace with real quality then there should not be a problem. Whoever comes in will probably not have his all round strengths but could well be stronger in certain areas. That's why I like the idea of Berbatov and perhaps Anelka.

Berbatov has a much better touch and more skill than DD and Anelka on his day is a clinical finisher. I'd day overall, that partnership is even preferable to Drogba and anyone of Sheva, Pizarro or Kalou - although Drogba & Berbatov would be much better still!!!

We play better with him because a)he's been the world's best striker in the last season in a half and 2) our attack was pretty much built around him over the last three seasons.

But you seem to forget that in his first two years at the club Drogba was nowhere near the level of the player he is now. True, he had worked hard, was dominating in the air, but his footwork was crappy, he couldn't beat a defender one on one, couldn't outrun most of them with the ball at his feet, passing and shooting were equally erratic and he spent a lot of time rolling on the pitch and moaning to the ref.

I seem to recall making a thread on the old CSR titled "Drogba is hopeless" and there were a lot of posters sharing that feeling.

Credit to Jose for keeping the faith with DD through all this time but i believe Mourinho made a mistake of putting too many eggs in one basket, so to speak. Those CL semifinals against Liverpool are great examples of how short of the ideas we were once 'Drogba plan' upfront wasn't working.

At least he is giving us plenty of notice to quit.

6 months is plenty of time to sort out a replacement.

Good ridance, we don't need bad eggs at our club if we're going to make good omelette's. I just want some more players playing for Chels, and not players who were just playing for Mourinho/money.

i just hate that he has to come out in public and just say that he wants to move, no respect at all.

That was Mourinho's strategy. He deliberately built the team to be reliant on X player to do X role well as opposed to say Wenger whose side attacks as more of a collective unit that get around over reliance on one player through movement and passing.

He has always been likes this. I long since accepted that he will be off in summer.

Appreciate his efforts for the club, but his attitude and diving mean that for me, he will never be a bonifide Chelsea legend in the same way that JT or Franco are.

P.S. Great point Qaz, agree entirely.

I must say i personally prefer the Wenger's system for simple reason that in case player X is unable to perform his best or is simply missing there are other alternatives. Van Persie who is arguably their best striker has been away with an injury for quite some time and they'd hardly missed a bit.
