Very true, we're halfway through January and as it stands weaker than we were a month ago. Liverpool & Arsenal games are coming up soon - at this point maybe too soon for new signings to give us an edge over them.

I don't know if this is down to Emenalo or not though. I genuinely doubt he has authority over our budget, but instead he is just making suggestions. It's difficult to do good business in January and maybe they're thinking seven points is enough to wait it out until summer. 

It would be presumptuous of me to suggest that I know more than the people in charge of the team, but I personally thought there are a few gaps, which only grew larger with the recent departures. A little more inbound transfer activity would be good.

To be fair it's been a pretty quite January for everyone. None of the big clubs have signed anyone

Totally disagree... Papy was never a 'player' for us, he's a merchandise tool for profit's purpose.. I supposed more or less you lamented our failure to get john stone but he's not available for the right price and look at his performance at city now and his last season at everton, totally justified to miss this transfer.... Sure, there were other defenders but if the manager didn't fancy anyone else than his main target then it's difficult..

No idea how you can blame anyone for Alonso and Luiz late arrival, It's late because the interest on them was late... conte's primary targets were difficult to get, they all either playing hard ball or just didn't want to sell.. As soon as there was intent for alternative and it's possible to get them, the deal was completed quite swiftly..

Not much activity this january but what's the issue? so many people agree it's not the best window to spend so why waste money just for the sake of it?

Oscar & mikel were totally surplus this season, they don't need replacing, especially not in midseason.. let's face it, winter window is more or less for desperate measure and we're clearly not desperate.. Ideally, you don't buy replacement for back up, you use youth.. Chalobah & Rlc to fill that role..

Papy was a bizarre transfer whichever way we spin it. Given that he was signed so late in the day and thrown into the first team squad (and then subsequently replaced in January by Mizaga) tells me he was bought at the failure to secure a central defender who was going to compete for a first team place. 

RE Stones. If we never had any intentions on meeting Everton's valuation of him then we should never have spent so much time on trying to sign him because the evidence suggests that it was at the expense of signing a different central defender. Perhaps we left it too late after Stones to identify and sign a quality defender? 

Leaving it late with Luiz and Alonso. You yourself have said it's because we failed to sign Conte's first choice targets. So that's two summers running where we have failed to recruit the manager's primary target(s). Is this because we are targeting unrealistic options? Is it because we are undervaluing said targets (even if that's in the eyes of the parent club)? Either way I think it raises a question in how we've conducted transfer negotiations for the last two years, especially when contrasted to to the year proceeding when Costa and Fabregas in particular were recruited very quickly by contrast. 

RE lack of activity this month. I alluded to it in my previous post but basically I'm saying, we're in a much stronger position in the league than we expected so why not try to capitalise on that? There's not many (if any) other clubs with £60m burning a hole in their back pocket following a player sale so we find ourselves with funds to strength, especially after lightening to wage bill considerably too with also releasing Mikel. 

So given that Conte clearly has reservations about playing Michy, why not recruit another striker? Given that Alonso is the only natural fit at LWB why not add depth there? 

In isolation this window isn't anything out of the norm but in the wider context of how lackadaisical (I feel) we have been with regards to transfers for a couple of years I thought it worth comment.

I honestly have no idea why people are so fixated on Papy (seems to me as an easy way to target Emanalo). Yes he was a rubbish signing, but he didn't even play and was sold for profit, so his presence at Chelsea was literally irrelevant in terms of damaging. I mean, we've signed players like Sidwell, Ben Haim, Jarosik and Smertin before so odd transfers like that are nothing new.

I've said this time and time again, real football is not football manager. I'm sure Emanalo and co know exactly what they are doing and are handling circumstances to the best of their ability. If they were so incompetent, we wouldn't have Conte and a performing side top of the league.  We had every intention of signing Stones (to back Jose), however when buying you know there is a limit and all you can do is test resolve. We might have identified other quality defenders and failed at inquiry stage. Remember, we only know the surface of whats happening yet we all think we can explain the transfer and targeting process in just a few sentences.

We failed to sign Conte's first choice targets like I'm sure many other clubs do also. There is no massive skill in signing targets. All you have to do is look at China. As long as you have the money it will work. However, Chelsea will no longer be mugged off and therefore some bids we will win and some we will lose. There is a difference between the board being tight (ala Wenger) and being sensible. We are the latter.

Lack of activity this month? What about Real Madrid for the last 2-3 seasons. They are without a doubt the biggest spenders and yet have slowed down, not because of tightened purse strings but because the lack of identifiable quality on the market is so hard to find within the right value.

You only have to see the outburst of people blaming Emanalo because we didn't back Mourinho and spend 60-70m on Stones. Now imagine that actually happened. We wouldve seen how overrated Stones is, our defence would've still got demolished and Jose will be screaming for more funds again.

To sum up, it's a seller's market today, there are more quality clubs than there are players who are very hard to come by. Don't just expect the board to go out and recruit this player or that player because it's not as easy as that!

I thought it's when we're struggling or missing lots of players to injury that we need to spend  in midseason window but in your case, even when we're comfortable, we still need to spend so in other words, we have to spend regardless?? 

We may have 60mils to spend but this is not the window where quality player is available... would you rather spend more than half of that budget for something we probably don't need it?? or would you wait till summer for a marquee signing that can actually improve the 1st team?? 

Conte can not be spoilt, batshuayi is good enough as back up, his return in goals & assists are more than decent despite his very limited chances, it's 30mils signing after all and  regarding alonso, instead of buying his back up, I'd rather wait till summer to buy someone better to replace him in the 1st team.. In the mean time, we can use youth if not now then when??  surely there is someone with natural left footed in the youth? even if there's no one, an inverted wingback can still do, it's only back up after all..

Your other points have been addressed by konakaiblue, more or less it's the same with I wanted to reply you so that's that..

He does seem to polarise opinions...for my part I am a bit suspicious of his ability to whisper in Roman's ear about players...after some were disappointed with some of the recent acquisitions I think he needs to come up with some big signings to help us get to the next level of performance...

 
All the flop signings are Emenalo's and all the good ones have been signed by someone else. :sofa:

 
Say what you will about Emenalo but he was the perfect replacement for Kenyon.

 
emenalo was an ex-player, right? seems like an almost natural progression to become a coach at some point. i do see us bringing in someone else eventually to replace him. he certainly isn't a dummy when it comes to spotting talent like some people think. 

 
Even one of his bad buys for us in Oriol Romeu is now starting to show at Southampton what a good player he is. He looked a lot better than Matic last season anyway.

We tend to buy a lot of good players, we just dont give them enough of a chance or we buy them too young and sell them too early. Some of the players we have bought and sold over the past few years that are now excellent players is amazing

Didn't buy Bertrand, romeu is an ok player, certainly not excellent. Salah was dreadful, hardly a mistake selling him. We haven't sold pasalic.
