This morning despite being delighted with the two results last night I am this morning wondering how we're ever going to bring through a defender or goal keeper. Defending at youth level is generally crap (not individual players necessarily but as a team), positioning and communication seem to be non-existent. I don't understand why.
A couple of reasons for poor defending at youth level, the main reason is the fact tactical work, isn't done a great deal before players reach 16. Most the training is spent developing technique, which is much hard to improve when players are older. The second reason it was particularly poor yesterday, is that the team that plays in the FA youth cup team, don't necessarily play or train as group through out the year. So there is some unfamiliarity.
I think theres as much chance bringing through a defender as any other outfield player, much more difficult for goalkeepers though, as any mistake for them ends in a goal, and chances are much rarer in the first teams.
Only just watched the game, had the snooker on last night, great game to watch, disappointed again with Loftus cheek although he did play last week against city, so fatigue may have played a part.
Patrick Roberts was the best player on the pitch, will be interesting to see if he plays for the 1st team next season, now Fulham are playing championship football.
Well done to the boys though, at least we saw a trophy get lifted at the bridge this year. Hopefully next season the senior will follow suit.
