Great World Cup or just quite good?

Still looking for some great football in this tournament. Semi finals coming up and i expect it to be as scrappy as ever sadly, hope i'm wrong.

Think the quarter final games have been the same as many of the last 16 matches, but lacked the late drama to paper over the cracks...surprisingly, holland v Costa Rica proved to be the best of the lot, but that isn't saying much

The quarter final games have sadly lacked the intensity, playing two of them locally at midday might have something to do with this. The competition has been a good one in comparison to recent events but so far is lacking a 'great' match. The great world cups have moments we all can recall in years to come. Without this history will show this world cup as another that flattered to deceive.

The higher the stakes, the higher the caution.

One thing you have to accept about knock out football I'm afraid.

I personally, have enjoyed all the matches apart from Brazil v Columbia. The ref ruined the game. So many fouls unpunished. No flow to the game.

We will remember group games like holland thrashing Spain and Ghana v Germany...apart from maybe usa v Belgium and rodriguez's stunning volley v Uruguay, can't see what people will remember from the knockout games so far in a few years time

IMO Brazil have been the worst team to watch. They seem more interested in fouling opponents than playing football. The Brazil/Colombia game was a disaster.

The group game was a delight to watch. Underdogs and perceived as the 'weakest' team progressing in the latter stages, defending champs and overrated teams to bid their farewells early in the tournament.

Clearly, it's not a bore to watch and it's quite saddening all of this action will soon be gone after a week.

We have a pre-season coming though.. excited!

Tonight's game ends the debate...started off very good, but it's petered out terribly...as dramatic and memorable as last night was, it also said a lot about the quality of teams in the tournament...if a side as bad as Brazil can get to the last four....

I think it has been pretty poor, hardly any good football at all. The majority of matches have been scrappy.

Germany deserved winners, but in the end not saying much...a lot of evenly matched teams, but said more about lack of quality if anything...it had it's moments and helped kill a month of the summer, but it can't wait for chelsea to play at Wycombe on Wednesday night and to see my first love in action again

Excellent group stages, okay knockout rounds. Overall a good, (not greatest), tournament.

I think it has been great probably the second best in my life time overall, I still get goose bumps when I hear Nessun Dorma

You had a £10 on Argentina Tommy ?
Something like that.

I refuse to justify my previous comment on the grounds that I am completely and utterly well pissed off. So much so that I'm actually...

... looking forward to Monday morning.

The tournament dropped off significantly.

It was no surprise that the entertainment left with the underdogs.

Every knockout game that was exciting (very few) involved an underdog trying to take the game to a more fancied side. When the sides were more evenly matched, we saw cautious low scoring games (Brazil- Germany aside).

Like I said elsewhere, I hope the next World Cup sees the less fancied advance further.

The best tournament I have seen is Euro 2008. World Cup is hard to judge (98 the first I can remember). This was on course to be the best, but dropped massively. World Cup 2006 had more memorable knockout moments and Germany-Italy in Dortmund was one beautiful football game.0

This was the best one I've seen so far, sad to see it end.
