How many home ends you been in?

Bolton (?) - can't remember the name of their end, but we went in there a few times, most memorably by a wholesale charge across the pitch by our entire mob. I always liked Burnden Park, a big old-fashioned ground.

Blackburn (?) - my first trip to Ewood Park was only a few weeks after my first trip to Blackpool. About 24 of us went up in a Ford Transit from South London, and found a nice little pub which sold Thwaites Bitter and sandwiches the size of breeze-blocks. The police made us go in the away end, where we met up with the rest of the Chelsea. I've never gone in the Blackburn end for some reason, though I'm pretty sure they had a sh*te mob - just well protected by the old bill?
Bolton would be the Lever end and Blackburn was the Blackburn end the away fans were put in the Darwen end.

Thanks for that, charierre - I remember us being in the Darwen end, but didn't know their end was just known as the Blackburn end. The Lever End at Bolton definitely rings a bell, my memory really is sh*te.

Bluebeards list has jogged a few cells and could now add to my list if I could locate.

Chelsea took West Ham circa 1970 give or take a year or two, I was not there but old West ham friend assures me this is correct.

Norwich Away league cup QF Chelsea has extra large crombie wearing contingent in the Barclay, don't remember any dividing fence, I think the fence was put up later and that was followed by a cage.

Sheffield Weds Cup game, there was a large contingent of us in their end all the game. There was another mob of Chelsea who more than repelled the well wishers from Sheffield via a sort of tunnel running under and near the top of the stand. Remember one of our fans at the turnstiles who was hemmed in and a police horse was chewing lumps out of his sheepskin.

The Millwall game was disorganized but we had more than a substantial amount of bodies in the CBL, As far as I am aware no other team has ever tried to take their end let alone have that amount of away fans in it?, it was more than confusing, all the scarfs were blue and white at one stage there were literally dozens and dozens of fans on the floor wrestling, kicking and punching each other near a concrete upstand on the CBL, never seen this anywhere else. I ended up at the back next to railings on their halfway line side, their fans were pouring over from the half way bit, I had a bloke with a trumpet / small vuvezala style blowing it in my ear trying to rally the Millwall. I got alienated and left the CBL second half, as far as I can remember there were no police on the CBL that day.?

Rotherham, when they stuck six past us, escorted by police to the Chelsea end long before Rodney Fern

completed his hat rick !

Most recently the 4-4 draw at White Hart Lane with my Mrs to be, when Joe Cole scored I 'lost it' !

I heard that too, think it was August 1970, 2-2 draw (Keith Weller scored both). I was only about 13 then and used to go to all our away games in London, so I've been trying to work out why I didn't go to this one. Only feasible answer I can come up with is my parents kidnapped me and I was whisked off to a Pontin's holiday camp for the annual holiday.

Didn't make this one either, my first away game outside of London wasn't until about six weeks later at Derby. My first trip to Norwich was the night the fog came down and the match was abandoned.

I remember seeing a small mob of Chelsea quite low down on the terracing in the Kop during the game, I'd have given you a wave from the Leppings Lane if I'd known you were in there! Memory can play tricks, I've since got a copy of the match highlights of this game and there weren't nearly as many Chelsea in the Leppings Lane as I seemed to recall.

Now you mention it, I can't remember seeing any old bill in there either - can't say I blame 'em for keeping their distance, some of the most desperate terrace fighting I've experienced was on that day!

I forgot about Rotherham! Maybe it's a subconcious thing considering the result

Can't comment prior to 75-76 season. I did go to away games before that but don't recall much about them. For those younger fans who weren't there that season was our first in the old 2nd division after the relegation of the previous season. From the very first away game it seemed that an unwritten rule had been agreed upon, namely that every home end should be taken or at least a good attempt made. Myself and five or six mates from Basingstoke were not into the fisticuffs side of following Chelsea but enjoyed the thrill of seeing the home fans flee so much that we invariably went into the home end ( usually pissed). So from Sunderland (not easy that one) to Plymouth the local old bill and and general population became frightened whenever Chelsea were in town.

The Bolton match was typical of the time. We arrived in Bolton two to three hours before the match on a normal Intercity train, change in Preston ( or was it Wigan), having consumed the obligatory six cans of Skol, Heineken whatever. We had quickly learnt on our travels that the best places to drink were often the clubs own supporters club bar outside the ground or a local working mans club. Invariably we bluffed our way into these establishments and enjoyed downing a large quantity of the local brew. Bolton had a great supporters club bar in the main stand so that's where we spent a happy couple of hours quaffing and chatting to the locals. We staggered out about twenty minutes before kick off and somehow made it into the Lever Stand. We were all tanked up and bleary eyed but we reckognised a few other Chelsea around us. The small mob above began to sing and we and other small groups joined in, can't remember the song though. The end was fairly full but emptied fast. Panicked looking Bolton fans ran past us heading for the pitch or the exit, we had a hard job remaining upright in our inebriated state as they streamed past. About fifty of us had taken there end, without a punch being thrown I would guess. Feeling well chuffed we looked over the pitch and saw thousands of fans passing each other, Chelsea coming towards us and Bolton going the other way.

Just another Saturday afternoon following CFC around England in the mid seventies. With my fading memory cells and the amount of beer consumed in those days I'm amazed I can recall any of it still. I'll try and drag up some more memories for you all if I can.

PS. I've been in dozens of away ends, don't remember all of them but apart from the smaller clubs Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, Newcastle and Aston Villa would be among them.

The quantity of beer I got through would kill me off now. Not only that I would also meet up with Billy and Bob. Amazed I could even walk sometimes let alone anything else. Huge laughs in the main. It stuns me how some people remember so much detail about stuff that far back.

Anyway, I grew up out of all that tribal nonsense. So many of mates didn't make it.

I managed to get into many away ends over the years, early 70's to mid '80's, always a great feeling to take them. So, in no particular order...

Arsenal (North Bank) - 76/77, an evening League Cup match - a fair sized mob of us got in there and stayed the whole game, standing to the right as you look at the pitch - great row outside too, when the rest of the Chelsea joined us from the Clock End. The following season, 77/78, we took it again with an even bigger mob on Boxing Day - excellent day out all round, apart from the result (0-3).

Tottenham (Park Lane, Paxton Rd End) - went in the Park Lane but got moved out, early 70's, then they changed their home end to the Paxton. Went in there a couple of times, kicked off big time, naturally. Can't remember us ever going on the Shelf, don't know why.

Millwall (Cold Blow Lane) - 76/77, a small mob of us got in the CBL. We were squashed up in the top corner, and our numbers fell as more and more Chelsea were either nicked or made a discreet exit. I stayed most of the game, but left near the end. Once I was out on the streets I wished I'd stayed in the CBL, Millwall nutters everywhere, some of them were old dockers in their 50's & 60's. It would have been safer walking through Beirut with an 'I hate Arabs' t-shirt on, but I somehow made it home in one piece. Revenge was sweet at the Bridge later in the season!

QPR (The Loft) - total joke, we went in there mob handed every time we played them, and not a QPR fan in sight - w*nkers.

Fulham (Hammersmith End) - same as QPR

Crystal Palace (Holmesdale End) - not sure why, but we always seemed to go in the other end (Whitehorse), but we'd always give a cheer as we watched about half a dozen Chelsea clearing the Palace out of the Holmesdale, lol. Total w*nkers, even worse than QPR and Fulham, as Palace were gobby.

Watford (The Rookery) - we didn't play them often but I remember us clearing the Rookery at least once - no big deal, even Fulham could have had a fair go at them.

Orient (?) - went to Brisbane Road two or three times in the 70's, but as Chelsea took over the whole ground I never did find out which was their end!

Luton (Oak Road End) - easy, bit like Watford

Brighton (?) - FA Cup game in 72/73, I was with the main Chelsea mob along the halfway line (think it was all-ticket that day), but a few Chelsea were in the Brighton end. It kicked off in there during the first half, and at half-time loads of us charged across the pitch to help out the Chelsea boys - needless to say, Brighton bottled it.

Southampton (Milton Road End) - we always went in the Milton, usually took it, then got a police escort down the away end. One season I particularly remember though, Southampton steamed us from behind and we ended up at the front of the terrace. The Chelsea fans around me didn't seem bothered, but I was incensed that we'd been steamed out of their end, after all, we were Chelsea ffs! I totally lost it and steamed up the empty terrace and piled into the Southampton mob at the top. I gave a pretty good account of myself, but I was totally alone, as the Chelsea boys were still at the bottom watching (and laughing). In the end, in an unspoken agreement, me and the bloke I was currently fighting just stopped and shook hands, and I turned and went to join the Chelsea - the Southampton mob even gave me a round of applause for my efforts. I was totally pissed off that the rest of our mob didn't pile in, as it damaged our reputation, but as soon as I rejoined them we were all escorted up the other end - me with a split lip and my shirt collar ripped and sticking out the back of my jacket - lol. Happy days!

Portsmouth (Fratton End?) - can't remember much about my visits to Pompey, due to alcoholic intake en route, but I know we went in their end at least once.

Plymouth (Devonport End?) - not sure of the year, but we took their end easily enough in the mid-70's, then had a full-on battle with them outside afterwards.

Leicester (Kop) - took this end at least twice in the 70's, never rated Leicester as a mob

Stoke (Boothen End) - my first time at Stoke we took a fair sized mob into the Boothen and stayed there the whole match, think it was 72/73. I can still remember the Stoke fans bouncing up and down and singing 'We are the Potters' over and over again, really looked and sounded pathetic. We got ambushed on the way back to the station by a load of Stoke waiting for us in a graveyard, but we ran them easily enough. Went in the Boothen again at least a couple of times in the 70's, never really felt intimidated there.

Nottingham Forest (Trent End) - we got in the Trent End on a number of occasions, they had a decent mob and always put up a good fight. The best year was when the police made the Forest stand in the away end and gave us the Trent End to ourselves, Forest were gutted. Can't include that as taking their end though!

Wolves (North Bank) - 'We're the boys in royal blue, we took Molineux' used to echo around the Bridge in the early 70's, as we nearly always took a mob into their end and took it. The exception was the 76/77 game which we were banned from, but we took a huge mob up there anyway and the police had to put us in the South Bank to keep us off the streets. Big ruck at HT in the bar, then another on the pitch afterwards (thanks to the police for that one, both sets of fans were celebrating promotion together before the old bill stepped in for no good reason).

Coventry (West Stand/West Bank?) - never rated Coventry, and every time I went there we took their end

WBA (Smethwick End?) - WBA never had a hard mob, and we got in their end quite a few times. Loved the Hawthorns back then, lovely ground.

Aston Villa (Holte End) - can't remember the season, but we totally cleared the Holte End as has been reported on this site many times

Ipswich (North Stand) - Ipswich's mob were on a par with QPR, and therefore not worth talking about - we took their end many times

Bolton (?) - can't remember the name of their end, but we went in there a few times, most memorably by a wholesale charge across the pitch by our entire mob. I always liked Burnden Park, a big old-fashioned ground.

Sheffield United (Shoreham Road Kop) - a 'special' full of us (about 600) went in the Kop in 72/73 and stayed the entire game, despite being bombarded with steel ball-bearings, bricks, lumps of concrete, stones and darts. The police just stood there holding them back and laughing as we were hit with missiles over and again, but then, all northern coppers were total c*nts back then. After the match we joined forces with the Chelsea lads who were up the other end, and had a ruck with the Sheffield lads on a building site on our way back to the station. The following season we got in their end again, and were reinforced by the Chelsea lads in the other end, who charged across the pitch to help us out.

Middlesbrough (Holgate End) - can't remember which year it was, but we turned up early and took their end before the Boro lads even got in the ground. When they turned up they tried everything to get us out, but we stayed put. Boro were another mob who liked to throw missiles, particularly darts.

Manchester City (Kippaxe) - again I can't remember which season it was, but I do remember us getting in the Kippaxe and giving an excellent account of ourselves. We normally took a decent sized crew to City, who had a hard mob - always respected them.

Cardiff (Bob Bank) - took this at least once, but Cardiff had a few hard boys and it was never easy. At least two memorable days out at Ninian Park for Chelsea boys, but they've been covered already on this site.

Then there were the away ends we didn't take (at least not in my experience)...

West Ham (North Bank/South Bank) - Chelsea rarely took a decent mob to Upton Park back in those days, probably because the Mile End boys took the Shed on a regular basis when they came to the Bridge. A small mob of us occasionally ventured into the North Bank, but were so outnumbered that we'd end up in the South Bank, which was nearly as bad. Not a nice place to go back then.

Bristol Rovers (Tote End) - I remember us trying to get into their end at Eastville near the end of a game in the mid 70's, and being surprised at how up for it they were. Decent mob

Bristol City (?) - I know I've been to Ashton Gate more than once, but don't remember a thing about it - damned beer!

Birmingham (Spion Kop) - their 'end' was along the side of the pitch on a large covered terrace. My first time at St.Andrews was in 72/73 - the first Chelsea 'football special' were put in the Tilton End behind the goal, but I was on the second 'special' and we managed to get onto the Spion Kop. A few hundred of us started walking towards their mob, but as soon as they sussed who we were they steamed down the terrace and I took a right kicking. I stayed in the end though, with a mate, but the rest of the Chelsea had either left or were practising their Brummie accents. Big ruck at the station after the game, as some bright spark who worked in the fixtures department had arranged it that Man.Utd would play at WBA the same day - mayhem!

Derby (Popside) - one of those grounds where the away fans were seperated from the home end by just a set of railings - in Derby's case the Popside was along the side of the pitch. We could have taken Derby easily on many occasions, but for some reason we always ended up the wrong side of the railings. Nearest we came was when they sang to us 'we'll fight you on the pitch', so we stormed onto the pitch - surprise surprise, Derby stayed put. They were a nasty little mob, liked to ambush away fans on the long trek back to the station, but usually picked on scarfers.

Norwich (Barclay End) - like Derby, we were seperated from the Norwich boys by a set of railings. Norwich were one of those gobby mobs when they were safe behind the railings, but totally bottled it when there was no barrier. We always took a large mob to Norwich, sometimes loads of us trying to climb over the railings to get at them. I suspect one of the reason we took such numbers to Norfolk was the reputation of the local girls, easy doesn't describe them! I remember a whole line of us Chelsea lads shagging some Norwich bints at the back of the Barclay, so glad I didn't catch anything nasty!

Blackpool (Kop) - my first time at Bloomfield Road was in 76/77. We had a large mob there that day, but couldn't get in their end as it was the same as Norwich, only the railings were higher. Most memorable part of the day was when large numbers of Rangers and Celtic fans started fighting in our side. Bedlam, rampant Glaswegians trying to kill each other, Chelsea fans at the top of the railings swinging punches at Blackpool fans, the names of all four teams being chanted throughout the game, great day out.

Sheffield Wednesday (Kop) - 72/73, FA Cup match at Hillsborough. A trainload of us made our way to the ground and tried to get into the Kop. I was one of the first through the turnstiles, and eventually about 20 of us made it in, but the Wednesday fans must have heard Chelsea singing outside, and turned up in large numbers by the turnstiles. Most of them seemed to be tooled up with large spanners, iron bars and the like, and they steamed straight into the 20 of us, giving us a good hiding. I'm not ashamed to say that we jumped back over the turnstiles to get away, as there was no other way out.

We then had a small ruck with the Chelsea lads who hadn't got in, as they were giving it large about us bottling it and we were asking why they took so f*cking long to get in. Pretty obvious really, they saw what was happening to us inside, and didn't fancy it. So, I'd entered the ground and exited again, fought against some mouthy Chelsea lads, took a kicking from the Wednesday boys before we even got on the Kop terracing, all within about ten minutes!

Revenge was sweet though - after watching the game from the Leppings Lane end, the Chelsea fans mobbed up and stayed together outside, which was pretty unusual back then. As we walked up a hill towards the station we saw a large mob of Wednesday and steamed into them. I'd still be kicking the sh*t out them even now, if it hadn't been for some Chelsea fans pulling me away!

Burnley (Longside?) - another of those 'ends' that runs alongside the length of the pitch. This was another Ford Transit journey, but me and my mate Doug (we were totally hammered) somehow got seperated from the rest of the Chelsea and so decided to go in the Burnley end to meet up with them again. However, me and Doug turned out to be the only two Chelsea fans in the Longside, as the rest of them were behind the goal to our left - doh! We remained undetected until Doug went for a piss, then returned to inform all and sundry what he thought of the local facilities in a broad South London accent, upon which the two of us had to leg it up to the Chelsea end at a speed that would have made Usain Bolt look infirm.

Bloody hell, I've just realised how long I've been waffling on for - sorry!!!

There are plenty more grounds I've been to, but I can't think of them right now - and there are lots of memories which have been obliterated for all time by booze. Ah well, never mind!
The Orient at the side was called the West Side. Remember the 1974-75 match at Birmingham you remember when we all went in the kop at the side most of the Chelsea ran away accross the pitch just before half time. Middlesborough 1978-79 when we lost 2-7 when the players came out Chelsea cleared the end but the Police moved them around the pitch. Bolton's end was called the Great Lever end went in their end 1976-77 season standing in the middle shouted Chelsea they ran straight on the pitch and the chelsea in the open end came accross to the GL end.

My memory is not that great unfortunately. I don't know why but I have a clear recollection of certain games, not that many mind. I agree about the tribal stuff, it was a bit moronic looking back but I imagine most of us grew out of it.

Memory is indeed a strange thing. I can remember some matches like it was yesterday, others I can't remember at all.

i've been in quite a few home ends usually incognito pissed or just bad luck but the one that gives me nightmares even now is being in the northstand against the y*ds in 1978.let me explain the night before the game my old man gave my brother the money to get us both in i was in bed. now my brother supports spurs so the next day we get to the ground so i said to my brother give me my half of the money i'm going in the shed he said (lying of course) dad said we have to stick together fine we'll both go in the shed then, now anyone who's got an older brother will know that wasn't happening either go with him miss the game and get a dig off him when he got home so i went in the northstand oh god it was horrible first half duncan mckenzie chips the ball and tommy langley scores a brilliant bicycle kick the best goal by miles in that dreadful season and i have to stand there and not cheer, chelsea fans are taking the piss out of ardiles and villa and i'm trying not to laugh anyway they win 3-1 my brother is laughing at me and grabbing me everytime they score.spurs started pulling at the fence between the north and west stand before the game but it was all bravado and they had a half hearted attempted at taking the shed but they soon saw the errors of there ways and were quickly dealt with but this is still the worst day i've ever had watching chelsea

I was watching that scenario from the Shed praying the fence would come down allowing chelsea seats and anyone else to show those spuds its not good to do this at the Bridge without bringing harm to themselves...The spuds in the shed certainly made a quick getaway and were applauded by their main lot....

Funny that, seeing Spurs get a kicking right in front of me was one of my best days!

West Ham away, the 1969-70 match was a midweek game and the 1970-71 match was the 2-2 game Chelsea never went in the North Bank that day the main mob fighting all the way to the ground and put in the South Bank, 1971-72 we lost 1-2 John Hollins scored for us and Clyde Best scored 2, Before the match most of the fighting was up the South Bank and a mob of Chelsea went in the North Bank tried to take it West Ham sang your never take the North Bank and the West Ham ran accross the pitch from the South Bank and Chelsea in the NB disappeared. Hope this helps

What about silly times when one , in retrospect, is happy to get onto transport home....Sometime in the 70s i drove to WBA on my tod...Met a couple of ALBION fans and ended up getting pissed b4 the match in one of their pubs....Went into their end with these guys who were good hosts....I think it was a game where DIXON might have scored a goal....Anyway coz i was pissed i started shouting rediculous things in their end like ...YOUR SUPPOSED TO BE AT HOME.....COME ON, THAT WAS A FAIR FOUL by one of our players on one of theirs....I was tollerated for the first half , then the 45 mins whistle blew...Pissed me walks down to the loos..While im relieving myself im aware guys are around me but not going to the loo...Fear hit in for the first time. I remember a tremble go through me and the thought that i wasnt gonna leave this loo undamaged...A huge blond bloke asked me for a light even tho no cig was in sight....At that point the most wonderful sight came to view..A cop walked in to the loos to see if all was ok in there. I dont really know why...I walked quickly past him and onto the terrace...The HOSTS were obviously told by other WBA to get me out or else...I snuck off into the vast terrace and lost myself amongst others...Paranoia stepped in at full time as i was sure i would be captured on exit..My walk to find my car was a lonely one, and to find a tyre was punctured too..On my way home the safety feel was good...This is a mild story of many......YOURS

I read above that luton were always a doddle...I remember in mid seventies, chelsea taking lutons end , and witnessing an amazing scene of bravery....Once taken i saw a large white haired luton fan fight single handed all the way through chelseas mob from bottom to top, and then back through them again..All the while he was being wacked from all ways but didnt go down..Respect was present towards him that day.....Wonder whether he grew up to be Boris Johnson
