1979-80 Leicester City 1 - 0 ChelseaThe year
Leicester City won promotion as Division 2 Champions.
This is a a story with a different perspective on the topic because for this match we were an isolated group of Chelsea (high up) amongst the vast LCFC home seated support.
On entering, we were pretty much sussed straight away by the locals around us. Fortunately for us, they were a respectful & friendly lot. Mind you, I'm not so sure this hospitality would have been reciprocated back at the Bridge? At this vantage point, it was a privilege indeed to be amongst the home support because the grandstand panoramic view allowed us to witness all the shenanigans, mayhem and menace played out in the Terraces below us & the true frightening nature of Chelsea's large & impressive away support. It was truly a site to behold!
Leicester's boisterous home terrace was behind the goal to our right. It was divided into 3 x equal size pens or sections. Chelsea had been given the far section including all the seating wrapped around the side of the pitch (right up to the half way line) & Leicester the rest. An early doors entry attack on Leicester's middle pen had been successfully repelled! However, Leicester's near side pen had clearly been infiltrated by some serious CFC boys which muted their support (within it) quite noticeably! In fact, it was clear from our viewing platform that Leicester's finest were significantly out-numbered should the fences be removed! The first half was played out with continuous sporadic outbreaks of problems caused by Chelsea fans. Some CFC even getting caught up in the goal netting! It even kicked off directly below us as some locals were scattered! This off-field entertainment finally settled down for the second half. Then we were treated to Chelsea's amazing 'Geordies of the South' continued vocal support for the remainder of the entire proceedings. The norm' back then but unfortunately, long gone today ...
You could sense the fear & unease from the local support around us as the game drew to its conclusion, despite Leicester winning this 'crucial' promotion decider the vast home support in the seats had clearly seen enough & were just concerned about their own 'health and safety' getting home. And who could blame them! I would have felt
exactly the same if an equivalent sized mob had descended upon the Bridge.
I was told later that the old bill, in their wisdom had let the terrace sections out together, much to the Chelsea mobs delight resulting in one big melee! This was also one of those many games from this era when our vocal away support would continuously sing ... "Chelsea, Chelsea ... Chelsea, Chelsea" ... almost non-stop for an entire half, whatever the outcome and you can hear this on the match day video highlights link below.
