Music cover versions - where the cover improves the original

just remembered about this thread and thought that there is one more song that I should add. Okay, this is yet another one of those where it is blasphemy to even suggest that the original can be bettered, but seriously this band does the original justiceOkay, so the original is: "Heard it through the grapevine," probably most famously known is the marvin gaye fersion. However, Gladys knight and the pipps also covered it, and it was originally recorded though shelved by smokey robinson.

Anyway, the cover version, and this song has been covered quite a bit, the band that recorded it added their own rock adn roll edge including wailing, smokey, sultry guitar solo's and one of the best vocalists of all time. THe band, Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Seriusly, if you have not heard this version, check it out. If you like the song, like creedence, or like good bluesy rock and roll, then this is a must hear. It is on the Album "Cosmo's Factory" also a tremendous album with some great songs on there too.....run through the jungle, as long as I can see the light, who'll stop the rain, up around the bend, lookin out my back door....

Scott
I love CCR's version, but still prefer Marvin Gaye's effort.

Oh, and I would also recommend "Cosmo's Factory" to anyone who likes rock music - Creedence's finest album, just edging ahead of "Willy & The Poor Boys", "Bayou Country" and their first album, simply called "Creedence Clearwater Revival". Sh*t, I'm gonna have to go and play some Creedence now.....

Willy and the Poor Boys is a good one, think it was their third album, right? Cosmos factory is a great album, glad to have another CCR fan on here.

The sad thing about Cosmos, is that was the last album they recorded together. Their last album, can't remember the name of it, Tom Fogherty was not on it as he and his brother had fallen out.

The last album was pretty poor though as John Fog had suddenly told the remaining two members that they were now responsible for 6 songs a piece on the next release, when John had taken all the responsibility before. Needless to say, their songs were bad! Anyway, all the previous albums up to and including Cosmos are grreat Bluesy, Swamp rock. And despite all their singing about bayous, they were actually from California

Creedence albums in chronological order: -

01 - 1968 - Creedence Clearwater Revival

includes "I Put A Spell On You" and a brilliant 8?+ minute version of "Susie Q"

02 - 1969 - Bayou Country

includes "Born On The Bayou", "Proud Mary" & "Keep On Chooglin'"

03 - 1969 - Green River

includes "Bad Moon Rising" & "Lodi"

04 - 1969 - Willy & The Poor Boys

includes "Down On The Corner", "Fortunate Son" & "The Midnight Special"

05 - 1970 - Cosmo's Factory

includes the excellent "Run Through The Jungle", "Up Around The Bend", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "Who'll Stop The Rain" & "Long As I Can See The Light"

06 - 1970 - Pendulum

includes "Hey Tonight" & "Have You Ever Seen The Rain"

07 - 1972 - Mardi Gras

includes "Sweet Hitch Hiker". This is the one without Tom Fogerty, and is a very weak album compared to their previous stuff.

They also did a couple of live albums, one recorded in 1971 and the other in 1973.

Anyone new to Creedence, I'd recommend "Chronicle", a really excellent best-of compilation.

A Scotland fam and a CCR fan, we need to meet up for a pint sometime in the future

Born on the Bayou, Fortunate Son, Keep on Chooglin' - what a voice this man had.

didn't eric clapton admit defeat to bob marley's ' I shot the sheriff '.

That's a definite, though it may have been a touch easier to do while you were on Mull

Errrr - that would be the "I Shot The Sheriff" written and first performed by Bob Marley and The Wailers, would it?

Only recently heard this cover version:

Tina Turner - Whole lotta love

Wouldn't say it improves on the original but it's a top cover, which sounds like it was produced by the guy(s) who did the Temptations classics like Papa was a Rollin Stone and Ball of Confusion:

Anyone heard it ?

Sounds a bit like something off of a Blaxploitation movie soundtrack!

Not bad!

Not many will agree with me, but Goldbug's version is pretty decent as well:

[/youtube:x9ya4jx4]Not too sure about that specific live version, though, but I couldn't find the album version.

And why stop there, here's another version:

Performed by Nina Persson from the Cardigans with the Soundrack of our Lives.

Yes, by the British Electric Foundation (BEF) which consisted of Martin Ware and a couple of others from Heaven 17 and the original Human League.

Their seminal album, Music of Quality and Distinction relaunched Tina turner's career and also has one of my all time fave covers, Bowie's 'Secret Life of Arabia' as sung by Billy McKenzie.

By the way, that Nina from the Cardigans is HOT! When she sang 'I want to be your backdoor girl', I came over all funny... (NB 'Funny' is not the name of an 8th dwarf before anyone starts...)

love of the common people by stiff little fingers is far better than the original

madness it must be love is also a far better than the original

Sexual Healing- Ben Harper. It's a brilliant cover.

Also the stripped down, acoustic ballad version of Daydream Believer that was in a Dawson's Creek episode was brilliant.

Conversely one of the worst is Kirk Hammett's attempt to cover Little Wing. On that not, Stevie Ray Vaughan's covers of Hendrix show up the latter for the overrated musician he was.

The Lemonheads covered Simon and Garfunkels Mrs Robinson, changed it around a bit and I feel it was maybe an improvement of the Original although feel terrible saying it as the Original is quality.

Valerie by amy winehouse is better than Zuttons version IMO.

Nirvana covered Plateau and Lake of fire, which came from a folk banned named meat puppets or something like that, the versions Nirvana did were by far and away the best

All along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix (original was by Dylan I think)

The Jam did David Watts which is a belter but the original (Kinks) was also a great effort.

The Clash I fought the law was not an original but is the best version (original is by the cricketers or something similar!)

Whisky in the Jar by Thin Lizzy is not original but the best I believe.

Did they do much apart from just speeding it up? Just asking, 'cause it's been a while since I last heard it. I remember it was good, though. Might have to see if youtube's got the video.

Clash's version is the definitive version to me, but Dead Kennedy's "I fought the law(and I won)" is a cracking version as well.

Metallica's version of 'Whiskey in the Jar' is brilliant and better than (and very different to) the original.
