Perfect cross from Baines. Cole honestly shouldn't get a start over him when he comes back. Baines and Townsend have been the difference in this game.

Made an appointment with my doctor, something must be wrong with me. I'm actually enjoying a England game.

Have wellbeck and sturridge got a quid on a 0-0 or something, dreadful 45 from both. Brilliant goal though, such a good ball in and a superb header.

Baines has been fantastic. Maybe we should go for him next season if Cole shows he isn't up to it anymore? ;)

Best half I have seen us play for a long time.

Agreed with Dkw Sturridge and Wellbad just proving they are ordinary players

Baines, Townsend Cahill Rooney and dare I say it Gerrard ... Brilliant.

Still 45 mins to come back down to earth !

Good on you Stevie G. You can see it means a lot to him. England are in the World Cup. Very much looking forward to the World Cup now.

Off to Brazil we go then.

I doubt we have the stones to win the World Cup let alone reach a the final but I think we can at least reach the semi's this time.

Who should we take on the plane to Brazil though? Cahill is almost a given, he's been rock solid for England in defense. Baines is a no-brainer too as is Rooney and Gerrard. I'd still take Rickie Lambert over Sturridge though.

It's a shame, but I think Ashley Cole's reign as England's first choice left back might have come to an end.

Good performance and nice to get some enjoyment out of Internationals, Had a fiver on the 2-0 which helps.

Good to not have to worry about the playoffs.

You and the rest of nation :laugh2:

Can you imagine the media frenzy if we had to face a play-off?

Credit to Hodgson he has got England playing better than I have seen them for a very long time and he is afraid to take a punt on players either.

He trusted Oxlade-Chamberlain calling him up early on after taking charge and he has shown similar faith with Townsend now.

He's been bold with his team selections and formations in the games at home just how it should be.

Defense is our weakest position by far now, considering the wealth of fantastic centre backs we have produced in the last 15-20 years this is probably the worst pool of defenders to pick from.

Im not so sure, Baines is still not as good as Cole defensively. The good thing is we can play Cole in games where we know they will get at us, and Baines where we can get at them.

People getting too carried away. Baines barely had any defending to do in the first half (he was literally standing on the half way line for majority of the first half) and when he did have to defend in the second half he was caught out and looked shaky. If he's like that v Poland then I would hate to see how he copes against Germany.

Cole will always be first choice for the top teams in my view unless he shows significant decline on the international stage. He may be in poor form at the moment but he's always been one to give 100% each and every game when he puts on the England shirt. England could do with more players like him, not less.

There was a 10 minute spell during the 2nd half where nerves seemed to get the better of Baines, he lost the ball every time and was all over the place positionally. In a game like that it would have been ideal to bring someone like Cole on to shore things up. And the opposite is true also, if we start with Cole and get to the point where we need to attack more then we can bring on Baines.

It was noticeable how Baines faded in the second half. Whether it was nerves or fatigue, not sure and he wasn't helped by Wellbeck who was shocking both going forward and coming back.

But Baines does give us a lot more going forward and it was a great delivery for the goal - something Ash just doesn't seem to do these days. No doubt both will go to Brazil but if I had to choose one right now it would be Baines.
