The Ukraine Situation / Abramovich

I think what people take issue with is being expected to shoulder the blame for things that happened centuries ago. I never had an empire, nor have I oppressed or enslaved or colonised anyone. At some point you have to move on. The current generation of Brits are no more responsible for the British Empire than present day Germans are for WW2.
Very true. I stick by my point that the British Empire was highly racist, but it will be ridiculous and stupid to blame today's society for it.

However, in the light of this, a statement like "Britain is the least racist country" is also unjustified. I do think that we need the point of view of a few recent immigrants into Britain.

I see silver lining to Putins incursion to the Crimea

Heres hoping he invades the rest of the Ukraine, this way once Russia has total control our patron Roman will

be able to buy all the top players from Shaktar Donesk at knock down prices

Lets face it the EU and USA cannot do anything, Putin wants the Crimea naval bases and complete control of the Black Sea

most Ukraineans dont want or couldnt care less about NATO or the EU.

So let sget Shaktars best players in blue !!!

There's no more Shakhtar players I want tbh. Willian & Fernandinho were the main ones and we got the former. Henrikh Mk looked good as well but I don't really think he's been amazing in the Bundesliga so far.

Portugal, Spain, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Scandanavia, Great Britain....All had significant Empires...Before we even get on to the Romans...No one got them by using hearts and minds...Might was right, and thats just the way it was...

I get rather bored with people saying the British Empire was an evil Empire, while overlooking the colonisation of countries by the rest of Europe...I think that as a Nation we certainly have our fair share of racists, but I still think we are generally tolerant, especially compared to other Countries.

Don't forget the Egyptians, Greeks and Persians.

I hope people don't think I'm a racist for leaving them out...!!

Really sorry about that. Shouldn't have said what I did.

I do not think britain was oppressed. Several of the killings and other less extreme forms of discrimination had everything to do with race, but let's leave it here.

I want to make it clear that I am in no way suggesting that people alive today are responsible for the acts of their ancestors. And in no way do they need to feel any guilt. For example, I will readily say that India faces a high degree of religious discrimination. This statement does not reflect badly on me at all neither does it imply that I am responsible for what some of my fellow countrymen do. I do think that there is no problem in acknowledging truths of the past (important to do so, I feel) but want to stress that we are in no way responsible.

Just for a slightly frivolous but authentic take on the British rule in India, I would recommend watching the movie 'Lagaan'. The story is about a cricket match between the British and some Indian farmers. Great watch. Do check it out. It is in Hindi but will be available with subtitles.

Cheers all and I hope I made my point clear.Fair enough for your apology but Britain at the time of india rule where making children aged 5,6,7 work as obviously there was no welfare system at that time. So unless you where well off you where oppressed. That was the way it was probably in every country in the world at that time. But you will know Britain was the first country to abolish the slave trade some 100 odd years before Britain left india.

I once watched Dr. Zhivago, does that mean I could possibly be facing these sanctions along with Roman ?

Funny that the US and UK seem to think they're in control. All Russia has to do is stop supplying oil to us and we'll be running back with our tail between our legs

It's an interesting situation, which highlights why as a football club we need to be sustainable and not rely on Roman.

I think many of us had dismissed the concept of needing to be fiscally responsible because Roman would never sell the club. This situation shows that there are still inherent risks even if Roman is still owns the club.

While Financial Fair Play seems to be beaten, and we have still spent plenty, this should come as a wake up call to those who clamour for a Falcao, Neymar, etc signing each year.

The guy from Coulsdon who just won the lottery buy us if worse comes to worse. Im assuming he supports either us or Palace.

Fair enough 108 million isn't as much as Roman has but it could buy us a new striker and Luke shaw! ;)

Bernard is supposed to be pretty good.
