Why do you support Chelsea?

My dad would take me to football most Saturdays when I was a kid in the 1970s. Chelsea was the easiest to get to back then. He'd park on the North End Road, and we'd do the short walk to The Bridge and sit on those old concrete benches in the old west stand. Later I'd go with mates and we'd stand in the shed. I guess it stuck and I've been a fan ever since.

I moved to the USA in 1988 and lost touch for a long time. It was back in the non-internet and non-sattelite dark ages! I missed the whole Zola era. Relying only on three day old papers and visits back to Blighty.

Now we get more live games than you do! And I'm loving the HD. And I try to visit London two or three times a year, taking in Chelsea games of course!

The whole game is different now. I miss the times we'd pay 10/- (50p) to get in and the noise was deafening.

Last game I was at was Man City back in March. £70 a ticket for the west upper! I admire you boys that go weekly. Not sure I could afford it any more.

At 7 years old, Tore Andre Flo became my hero after scoring against Brazil in the '98 World Cup. Watched him at Chelsea the following season and i was a Chelsea fan. Obviously sticked with them ever since.

Born in Chelsea (St Stephens hospital now Chelsea & Westminster). Moved to north london when young. I thought I ought to support the team where I was born rather than L'Arse/Sp*rts.

Thank god for that. Can't remember first game. I can only remember the steps up to the Shed being so enormous I almost had to climb up them so I reckon must have been mid to late 60's.

 
I am from the U.S. so I did not get much of a chance to see matches outside of the Mexican teams on the Spanish channels. I don't speak Spanish, so that did not help. While I played a bunch of soccer in my youth and was pretty decent, (played through high school) I never really had a team to cheer for. MLS started and I tried to watch that, but it lacked the quality of the NFL and MLB so I never payed much attention to it. My first foray into the game was in the 2002 World Cup. I was in college at the time and my roommate/best friend was a very knowledgeable Portugal fan. He helped me to understand the finer points of the game and I walked away from the 2002 WC with a better understanding of what was happening. I pretty much forgot about the game until the 2006 WC where the US had a disastrous tournament but at least my then girlfriend, whose family comes from Rome, was happy. This time I followed the US team through qualifying and payed attention pretty much solely to the US national team until the 2010 WC. My old roommate from college and I flew to Europe for the 2010 WC and we took in the game in pubs, public squares, amongst the people. I really got into it and wanted to follow it more. I figured the only way to do that would be to have a club team to support.

When thinking about my team, I realized that I had to go with EPL since 1) They have the highest quality of play 2)they are shown a bunch here in the US and 3) the content is in English so I can follow it. I then began researching teams to figure out who I wanted to cheer for. I then called up my old roommate and he encouraged me to cheer for Chelsea. He became a fan when Mourinho was the coach. So, I chose to support Chelsea mainly becuase I would have a friend to talk about it with.

I am really glad my roommate was not a West Brom fan!!!

 
I'm another from the SW London/Surrey borderlands and like many kids in that part of the world the attraction of Chelsea training in Mitcham in the late 60's to mid 70's was probably what got me hooked. Are we unique, London wise, in having so many supporters from the other side of the river so to speak?

Never noticed huge numbers of goons, spuds or 'ammers south of the Thames when I was growing up, and I'm pretty sure there's no large Palace, Charlton and Millwall contigents on the north side, but if you go anywhere from Croydon right round to the river at Richmond or Kingston you'll probably be in an area where Chelsea has the biggest support locally.

 
I began following football in general recently - the first match I ever saw was the second leg of the Australia-Uruguay qualifier for the Germany world cup. Mum force fed me all the juicy details (Uruguay trying to move the game time/date, players being spat on etc... nothing new to football, but new to me), she sat me down and put her hands on my shoulders to stop me from leaving when sports was on the tv. It was an amazing match to watch and from that moment on I was hooked. Started following the local team which I was lucky enough to see in its first year, and got involved enough to play in my own team. Still the off season is long enough to fit another season in between and as hard as I try I can't get into Rugby.

So I needed another team to follow, and since mum got me into football, it was only fair I asked her what other teams she followed - Chelsea.

 
I have always lived about 5 minutes from the ground, all my brothers, cousins, friends etc support Chelsea so it would be unthinkable to support anyone else...

First started going to games the season we got promoted 1977...and was part of the most glorious pitch invasion, along with loads of other kids, grown men and the odd dog...

 
Dad took me to Chelsea vs Derby, all i remember is that i sat in the west stand and we won 4-0

Best decision he ever made !

I support Chelsea because I refused to conform with the glory hunting southerner masses who decided upon the Liverpools and ManUres when I was growing up.

Mine is more or less the same. Most irish support Manure or liverpool so I had to be different and besides that all my London relatives supported chelsea and when i was young i got all their old shirts!

Your mother is a wonderful woman and a a good parent. Whereabouts are you from in Australia?

 
when i start watching football, the first match was chelsea vs monaco at champions league semi-finals..

Oh the horror, still trying to remove those games from my memory.
