rigTeaserImagePETR CECH’S season is over after a horror clash with Tal Ben-Haim in training.
The Chelsea keeper was due to return for tonight’s Champions League tie against Fenerbahce.
But he needed 50 stitches in a gashed face and cosmetic surgery following an accidental collision with Ben-Haim.
A Blues source said: “We could tell right away it was very serious by the way big Pete went down and the amount of blood. This one looks like it will end his season.
“It was horrific and everyone feels terrible for him. He’s been really unlucky with injuries this season.”
Cech was rushed to hospital on Sunday afternoon after his face was badly cut by Ben-Haim’s studs in a 50-50 challenge.
The 25-year-old had just recovered from an ankle injury and already wears a protective helmet following the fractured skull he suffered at Reading 18 months ago.
Boss Avram Grant said: “He has been more than a little bit unlucky this year already. Now he is injured and out again.
“It was just a tackle between two players. It does not matter who he collided with — what matters is that he is injured again, unfortunately.
“This year has not been a good year for him. It’s his third injury and it’s even more unfortunate because he was looking so good in training.”
Chelsea suffered another blow last night when Michael Essien limped out of the Champions League build- up with a suspected back injury.
He will have a fitness test today to discover if he can play at right-back, with Paulo Ferreira on stand-by.
Meanwhile, Fenerbahce striker Colin Kazim-Richards, who netted in last week’s 2-1 first-leg win, has revealed he has his own score to settle with Chelsea.
Kazim-Richards, who played for Bury, Brighton and Sheffield United, said: “For me, it’s a bit personal being an Arsenal fan. The fact that it’s Chelsea makes it special for me. We are coming here to win.”
