Manual Ugarte

My preference is to get Rice / Caicedo + 1 more. I am not sure paying 60m for that +1 is a good idea.

He's a great player but we did the right thing pulling out. I would rather we go for someone like Palhinha instead of splashing big money on Caicedo.

Good that the board are learning and not overpaying for up and coming players. It was the right decision not to go overboard with the salary, and no one can compete with PSG's 10 million net. Ugarte has decided to go to the Spurs of Europe, bottlers of the CL, so he'll have to move on in a few seasons if he wants to win anything of relevance.

The thing is every club is after a good midfielder so we are battling with many good clubs for a mid. This is why scouting is so important. Caicedo only came on my (and i imagine most people's) radar this past season. Before that i knew nothing of him.

Are we certain that we can't find a equally talented CM with better scouting? Kante came from a smaller club in France before going to Leicester. Anyway, i would imagine that Pochettino is being updated. He will, i imagine, have other options to suggest.

You may be right, but PSG win their league almost every season and always guaranteed of CL football. It's not an exciting league, but PSG have good appeal for the aforementioned reasons.

Surely there are other options out there. Focusing attention on two midfielders seems a bit odd.
At this rate we probably need to add more names to the list if we want even one of them.

Our new salary model is not very good in terms of luring players in combined with lack of Champions League football.

Yeah I think if we can throw CL football in then it’s not too bad. The problem is that we’re abit of an unknown club at the minute. Under Roman, players knew they would play CL and win trophies. Under the first season of the new owners, it has been chaos, 4 managers and no CL football. Hopefully Pochettino can change that narrative.

But its Chelsea -line has an expiration date. To british players it could mean something but not that sure if south-american player is involved like Ugarte. Maybe Premier League itself can lure good players.

He's more chance of winning something of relevance at PSG than here. We're completely f**ked.

I haven't been following this transfer much at all. I just knew he was close to signing for us. So what is the issue here. Not giving him enough wages or PSG offeeing more in fee? That's the gist of it from what i gather.
Apparently PSG blew us out of the water with the money they offered.

We can't compete with the likes of PSG, Man City or Newcastle financially if they are really determined to land a player.

That's not true; a simple comparison of the European trophy cabinets of both clubs will tell you that.

But that is the past, not the current. He might as well sign for Nottingham Forrest if historic success in Europe is the attraction.

Unlike PSG, we're not even in European competition. We're closer to today's Nottingham Forrest.

One year of bad results under a turbulent couple of seasons with the Club having being sold after the UK Gov seized it from its owner and some people are starting to write us off. One bad season doesn't rewrite our recent history. The season 15/16 we finished 10th and we went on to win the PL the following season. I understand it's unlikely to happen this coming season, but that just goes to show that Chelsea is a resilient Club, and things will start picking up with the new manager coming in and the new team being build. We may not win much next season, but we will certainly start getting close to silverware from next season onward. We just need a clever coach, which I think we have now, and for the young team to click and start playing like a team.

Huge knee jerk there.

We finished 10th in 15/16 looking a total mess. We won the league the following season.

We still had Roman and his staff and some very good players then. This is very different.

I'm not buying that all of a sudden we're a hopeless club after one season. We have the players and hopefully now we have the manager, I'd give it a few years before you hold a wake for us as a top club.

Ben Jacobs reporting that PSG’s offer was always higher than ours and he hd agreed to PSG’s terms days ago.

Not sure what’s happened there. Bizarre.

Pochettino for all his attributes hasnt won any trophies in England so who knows how long the drought could on for, years. Most  good players know this and would rather go elsewhere  where they are guaranted trophies and at least play in Europe

If one season of UCL is a such a deal breaker for a player I get pretty meh about them.

Look at Kante for example, gave up a year of UCL (at the point he never played in it) to sign for us, the end result was him winning the competition and the "Champions League club" he left for us getting relegated.
