Robert Sanchez joins Chelsea

Sign Martinez, we can’t expect the front 3 to outscore the opposition all the time.

Sanchez makes the entire team shaky.

Why are we persisting with Brightons reserve keeper?

It’s been years now, I don’t know how good Penders is but he’s 21. When is he going to be ‘ready’. If he ain’t better than Sanchez right now then what are we doing?

We signed Cech when he was 22, straight in. Their keepers, it’s not like they have to get used to the pace of the game. Sign Martinez and ease Penders in but Sanchez is a liability. I struggle with all the player upheaval to see why this guy keeps his place.

The legend that was Peter Chech was 21/22 when we signed him. So no issues if the club promote Penders, Chech turned out alright, and he was turd with the ball at his feet unless he was going long, when he would find Drogba's head regularly. Game has changed but keepers used to play percentages kicking to the corner of the halfway line or beyond for distance from goal.... and there is nothing wrong with Sanchez doing that for us and just being a keeper.

Every manager, it appears, wants keepers to do Cruyff turns in their six-yard box, take 2 touches and send a defence-splitting pass. (sanchez got a couple of assists last season from his distribution so he can do it)

Given the lack of decent keepers, Im happy with Sanchez for now. give him a few more games in Alonso's system, think it'll all settle down given how well drilled they looked yesterday when not in possession. We looked tight and tidy; the first game of the season is the best one to get the ricks out of the system. Cant have too many more.

If there was a keeper to replace Sanchez, I'd hope the club would look at Pickfrod, but would need a crowbar to get him to leave everton.

The goalkeeper market is atrocious and Martinez isn’t the answer. Seen mentions of Simon (of Bilbao) had a good World Cup, good with his feet/sweeping but shot stopping is just alright, and being a ‘basque’ player with ‘reportedly’ no release clause, they’ll want Kepa money. Probably why there’s been zero links of him going anywhere, that, and the fact he simply isn’t elite.

And once an ‘elite’ keeper emerges… we’ll have competition from Real Madrid and others for such a talent, given the ages of the only decent keepers around these days being 30+.

Sigh.

Little piece on Emi Martinez from mid last-season, when Sanchez was looking great at the time and Aston Villa were flying high. Martinez and his propensity for errors was seen as their weakness.

Butt his graph was pretty damning because again, Sanchez was apparently in his prime at the time:

The thing that worries me is that Vicario, Lammens and Donnarumma get lauded while Sanchez gets lambasted and it clearly gets to his head. Whenever Sanchez has a bad game or makes a bad error, the media sh*tstorm is next-level and it clearly affects the whole team.

Despite the stats suggesting he's no worse than virtually all other keepers out there (which is an indictment on modern keepers, make no mistake), he has to go because his errors make for an outsized narrative compared to anyone else.

There is this idea that we have to only buy an elite keeper which I disagree with.

We don't have to buy someone elite, we just need someone better than Sanchez until that elite talent emerges. At least someone that makes the routine saves and can catch aerial balls.

Sanchez is one of the best in the league in the air. It doesn't mean he's good, it means the state of the goalkeeper market is abysmal.

So one problem is that we have to replace Sanchez with someone appropriately 'elite' because everyone else is just as bad if not worse, and another problem is that the goalkeeper market is so bad that even an 'elite' replacement will only be marginally better.

This is because Sanchez had such a monumentally awful 24/25 that no one could believe his 25/26 was not also awful. So the moment he has a bad game everyone acts like it happens every week.

Sanchez looks like he has stopped playing out from the back, which his howlers generally come from. Both goals at Fulham were mishandling/not handling errors whereas shot stopping has been a stronger area of his game. If this is a blip maybe we get by. That said he didnt look that safe with a few other shots in the Fulham game.

He wasnt good enough prior to Fulham and he still isnt. We dont win the league with Sanchez.

Alonso doesnt seem overly concerned...yet

An opportunistic Keeper purchase and hes done imo.

I agree with this. Sometimes a change is as good as a rest, just to change the narrative. If we a looking for a solid keeper that is no worse than Sanchez and has a good level of command from set pieces, there are plenty of options that take the attention away from the keeper and still allows Penders to develop ( if he proves to be good enough). Leno for example is a competent solid keeper, that is 34. Oblak similarly. If we accept the reality that there will still be faults with any replacement and it is purely about removing the heat from the position, then I think there are plenty of options.

That said, the performance by Sanchez was a bit out of character against Fulham tbh. This looked similar to his performances against Arsenal where his basic shot stopping and positioning even looked suspect. I agree on his decision making and on ball ability issues which will always undermine him, but against Fulham he just looked nervous and basically sh*t himself

yeah feel that too. Shouldn't be too hasty with another panic buy, don't want to end up with another kepa. Next season should be the right time to address it with proper planning from now on if they haven't already started it. This season I can understand if they want to focus on clearance in other parts first.

David Ornstein discussing Chelsea's goalkeeper situation.

"The goalkeeper coach is a fan of Sánchez'"

Clearly, Ben Roberts is Sanchez’s love child or something. Managers come and go and yet Sanchez starts as no 1 every season.

I made a joke during the Fulham game that we will never see Sanchez leave until Ben Roberts dies of old age, now I actually believe it. How long will Chelsea accept his cronyism?

Yeah clearly Ben Roberts is pushing for Sanchez to keep the no.1. Managers are clearly unsure about him and are forced to keep him.

In the athletic podcast, they were talking Penders and although he looks promising, it wasn’t hard to see where he made mistakes last season at Strasbourg. Throwing a 21 year old could potentially ruin him and damage his confidence.

It's not like Penders is a complete rookie. Two full seasons in the Belgian league and the French league, plus a Conference League semifinal. Give him the Luton match tomorrow and then a few PL matches in a row and let's see what the guy is all about. There is nothing to lose anyway, Sanchez has set the bar so low that even a lamp post as a GK has a better chance than Sanchez to randomly get hit by some balls and not cross the line for a goal.

We have been having the same conversations about Sanchez ever since we bought him, which at the time seemed a strange decision seeing as he was Brightons back up keeper.

4 yrs later and we now know he’s not good enough but he still no1. We were close to signing MM from Milan this time last year so obviously someone at the club knows he needs replacing.

Penders has to play Thursday, and if it’s deemed he’s not ready (if not at 21 will he ever be?)then get in someone who is.

Sanchez is a weak link, we know it, opposition know it and his team mates know it. He makes us twitchy. If they rate Penders then get Martinez for 2 seasons, if the jury is still out on Penders then get Costa.

It’s time for a new keeper.

Thinking on it more, I really don't want us to sign Martinez. Think he could actually be a downgrade on Sanchez. He's had some stinking performances and gets away with it as he's the Villa keeper.
Yep. After he won the world cup, I would have taken him, but after last season, nope. Martinez produces more quality performances than Sanchez, but ask any Villa fan and they will tell you he has been making way too many stupid errors of late.
