Robert Sanchez joins Chelsea

Yep. After he won the world cup, I would have taken him, but after last season, nope. Martinez produces more quality performances than Sanchez, but ask any Villa fan and they will tell you he has been making way too many stupid errors of late.
I agree.

If it were me i would be going for someone like Oblak and seeing if Sanchez could go the other way. I know that they want to maximise the amortisation game but if these current deals get over the line they are well in the gravy, so a swap plus cash deal (net amortised) can still work.

At lot of this i think is perception. Neville and Carragher sit there gagging for Sanchez to make another fck up. Just taking that noise away form that area will stabilise the defence. Oblak offers top level goalkeeper (still with some flaws granted) and is at an age that will mentor Penders and not block him, if Penders is all that he is being cracked up to be.

Honestly, I’m tired of watching him in goal.

Without even looking at stats he’s got to be around the 18th or 19th best goalkeeper in the league.

Stats might even have him as the worst.

We will never ever win the league with this guy in goal.

I honestly don’t understand why he plays, throw £15m at Villa and Martinez would come and still keep Penders as a long term investment.
18th or 19th??? Name a worst goalkeeper in the league than Sanchez? I’m not being funny I would take half of the championship goalkeepers over him right now… he’s awful and how he has been our no.1 for four season is beyond a joke…he’s distribution is awful he flaps at crosses and he’s prone to a mistake at least once every other match….

I was really surprised by him last night. He genuinely did great last year aside from when Rosenior ruined him for a bit.

He was shocking in 24/25, the stats bear that out, which I put at Maresca's door - and he fixed that by stopping his insistence on Sanchez playing short.

Last night was the first game I've seen where he's brain farted to such an extent, 3 times, without me being able to blame anyone but himself. Perhaps there's been a conversation behind the scenes about him leaving or Martinez coming in, perhaps its the pressure of Penders in training. He may have f**ked himself though, if he'd performed to the level he can last night, no one would be suggesting he leaves.
Behave mate I don’t know what games u have been watching? His has one good

Outside of the arsenal league cup game, where Rosenior decided to force him to play the way he can't play. Which game last season did he make a significant error? He was great all season.

The narrative has spun that he's always like this. He's not. He improved massively last season, was easily our most improved player.

Last night has probably killed him though.
Your talking absolute garbage mate he is the worst goalkeeper in the league by a mile… there is a 3 min video of mistakes from Robert Sanchez last year on you tube check it out 🤣 literally if u can’t see he isn’t good enough just from last nights game alone then u need help… he was Brighton’s third choice goal keeper when we brought him and that says it all….

This all stems from missing the chance to sign Mamardashville and getting Filip f**king Jorgensen instead.

Sanchez wouldn’t even be a conversation right now if we’d just done some proper business.

As it stands. We aren’t signing anyone. It’s not is Penders better, more can he be any worse?

  1. Sanchez was dogsh*t in 24/25
  2. Sanchez was very good in 25/26
  3. Sanchez has played one atrocious game this season
I can't find any youtube videos where it catalogues all his terrible errors last season that is 3 minutes long.

I would rather 25/26 Sanchez than Maignan or Martinez. I don't know what we're getting this season with him he's played one game. If there's an opportunity to upgrade this late in the window sure, however I'd otherwise be happier to roll the dice and risk Penders if Sanchez does revert to 24/25 level than signing a goalkeeper who would just make the same mistakes.

Very good in 25/26??? Arsenal game??? So we just wait till he costs us 3 points against Arsenal with another poor performance do we??? He has been here 4 seasons and has been erratic and full of errors… first game of the season and he has already proven he isn’t good enough both goals were his fault…

Didn't he get sent off after 5 minutes against Utd too?

And the 3-1 loss to Brighton last year i seem to remember he had a stinker
Don't see how that game can be laid at his door

Yes I didn't say he was perfect

Yeah that was the one game last season he properly f**ked up. And I blame that on the substitute teacher who came in and told him to play like 24/25 Sanchez or he would be dropped. He f**ked up this season, I don't know whether that is a one off like last year or a consistent theme.

Look last season he was very good. He's not a world class keeper. But he was very good. He had 2 bad games, one where he got sent off when the defence left him exposed, which happens to every very very good keeper in the world a few times. And one atrocious game against Arsenal when Rosenior told him he had to play short all the time, because "I have my philosophy and expect players to follow it even if we lose".

I just would rather we gamble with him / Penders than rush to sign someone who makes the same type of mistakes and arguably is a worse shot stopper (Martinez / Maignan). We aren't signing anyone better. I dont think he wins us the league. But I just dont think the alternatives do either.

Yep but that was the mangers fault 🤣 Jesus some people I suppose it was alonsos fault for his positioning on the first goal against Fulham and also alonsos fault he parried the ball back to where he did for Fulham’s 2nd… 🤣🤣🤣 if after 4 seasons he is still having games like that for his first game of the season surly a change is needed or do we wait till them mistakes cost us a cup final or losing the league title?

What is Ben Roberts even still doing at our club FFS? Had never heard of the bloke until he joined us. Had a career in the lower leagues as a keeper before getting into coaching where he has coached the likes of Yeovil, Charlton and Brighton. He came with Potter. Potter left, why is he still here with the useless Sanchez?

I'm sorry, Alonso is in FULL control now. After one game he has seen what a liability Sanchez is, has always been and always will be. He decides who goes in goal for us - NOT Ben Roberts. We either promote Penders or sign a better keeper before the window closes, whether Benny boy likes it or not.

Ben Roberts is an integral part of the CFC history for being the Middlesbrough keeper that conceded a goal after just 43 seconds in the 1997 F.A. Cup Final. The Di Matteo 30 yard screamer.

He's obviously an even more hopeless goalkeeper coach than he was goalkeeper LOL. Fortunately for him, BlueCo's MO up to now has been to surround themselves with mediocrity.

Thinking on it more, I really don't want us to sign Martinez. Think he could actually be a downgrade on Sanchez. He's had some stinking performances and gets away with it as he's the Villa keeper.
Well said. Peaked 2 seasons ago. Dropped some real clangers in recent seasons.

Yeah clearly Ben Roberts is pushing for Sanchez to keep the no.1. Managers are clearly unsure about him and are forced to keep him.

In the athletic podcast, they were talking Penders and although he looks promising, it wasn’t hard to see where he made mistakes last season at Strasbourg. Throwing a 21 year old could potentially ruin him and damage his confidence.
Hang on, weren’t the errors because the PE teacher wanted him playing almost as an outfield player. He was constantly playing passes and building up play from outside the penalty box. Actually see that as a strength when you consider his age.

Can't help themselves those two lol, does make me laugh though how they froth at the mouth over his (and others during the weekend) errors but have suddenly decided to "temper" it by saying beforehand "we have to be careful this is a human being we're talking about" and then go on to destroy him. Is this the new rather cringy effort of Sky Sports paying "Lip Service" to players mental health. Its ok to destroy as long as you give that little precursor beforehand.

Yes, i have used a similar approach when talking about Jamie Carragher actually.

"I wouldn't personally call him a c**t, but i wouldn't disagree with those that would."

Sanchez is one of the best in the league in the air. It doesn't mean he's good, it means the state of the goalkeeper market is abysmal.

So one problem is that we have to replace Sanchez with someone appropriately 'elite' because everyone else is just as bad if not worse, and another problem is that the goalkeeper market is so bad that even an 'elite' replacement will only be marginally better.
So we stick with his bozo moments knowing that our defence barely changed from last season?

Ben Jacobs was saying that Martinez is available for €10m euros. Whilst it seems a good price, Martinez actually has abit of a finger issue which is obviously key for a keeper and a risk.

Shame - for €10m, he would be perfect for a couple of seasons.
