This is it for me, armband or no armband. Terry will still play like what he is. A leader.
I know this just sounds like being a Chelsea fan to a person that supports any other club, but people keep making a big deal about the South Africa "coup". Armband or not, JT is the best leader in English football, maybe all football. He's had a lot of issues over the year (whether or not they are true seems to be irrelevant since they all seem to be brought up anytime his name is mentioned), but the "coup" in 2010 was more of a service to England than a scandal.

I would love to see him hang it up and for England to crash out in the group stages, although I would feel for our boys that make the trip, as well as a certain few other England players (mainly Scott Parker).

He was set up in that coup, and it was a disgrace to see him hung out to dry. Minutes after he had said what he said the majority of journalists were on twitter and web sites agreenig with hi, saying it was a good thing that he had done. The next morning they all hammered him and called him a disgrace.

One of the great things about Wednesday for me, was that the whole country was watching, and JT put in one of his great performances. He was immense.

I have always felt he is the best centre-back in the world, the best this country has produced since Bobby Moore, and he is so underrated, but on Wednesday, it was there for all to see, even the most blinkered.

Everyone I have met has ackowledged his performance and had to reassess their opinion of JT the player. How many defenders can perform like that? Winning every header, blocking every shot, making every tackle, performing in the big game, while injured, inspiring.

Rio has gone up for a thousand corners in his career. How many has he got his nut on? One? Two? Terry gets his nut on one or two every match, and he is being pulled back like no other player, because he is the danger man. It has nothing to do with height and power, it's all about ability, and desire. He does not go up for show. He goes up to score.

Props to the man. The greatest captain we have ever had.

how many goals has john scored now(no pens either)and how does he compare with other central defenders in the premier history.

Another point in Terry's favor - he's scored more goals this year than in any season since 05-06, when he was 26 years old and healthy. To do what he does, to be the backbone of a defense that desperately needs it, and to do it when he's injured and under more scrutiny than most could bear is incredible.

I love the bit where Ferdinand is described as a more technical or attacking defender.

No matter what yard-stick you measure it by- technical skill, passing range, completed passes, goals, shots, goals from head, goals with feet, assists- Terry is miles ahead of Ferdinand in every department.

Ferdinand has to be one of the most over rated central defenders I've ever seen, he's a bombscare.

I've never understood the love-in, to be honest. He is a good defender, even great, but never in the class of Sol Campbell or John Terry. His best days at United also coincided with career-best form from the likes of Heinze and Vidic. I think he complements his defensive partners very well, but in his own right he is not that good a defender.

^ We just can't do without him. He misses Barca, we literally have zero chance, IMO.

Rest him up until the Barcelna game. We have Cahill now who can fill in for him in the league and FA cup. We need him as fit as possible to take on the likes of Messi.

I'm inclined to agree, though I would hate to see us face Spurs in the semi without him. I would also field him against Arse, and the dippers. And that's it.

Whilst I agree it'd be a great boost to have him on the team, but I think you're doing a great disservice to Cahill, Luiz and even Ivanovic here. They're all more than capable of putting in a great performance at centre back.

f**king awesome to read through that article on the Guardian though, broken ribs and he's happy to play through it. Absolutely legend.

yes we should rest him until Barcelona and then see how hes doing, but we do have a decent replacement in Cahill.

Also can I just say what an absolute beast of a man he is, playing with 2 cracked ribs and still happy to play more. Most players nowadays would have been rolling around the floor and get carted off.

JT = Legend

I don't think its detrimental to Luiz or Cahill to say we badly need JT in the team, not only is he a better defender (at this time) than both but he is the leader out there and without him while under pressure we are a different team, I think were ok when things are going well but when ideas start to run out or pressure starts to build up JT is worth his weight in Gold.

I bet if you looked back over the season from as soon as AVB disgarded the high line you would find (I haven't checked) that we have had most of our clean sheets and less defeats with JT in the team and a big part of the main form dip came about while he was out.

We need him against Barca and I hope two weeks will be enough to have him ready to risk his Ribs again as I feel without him, good player though Cahill is, we will be in proper trouble.

John Terry is much more than just a good defender for Chelsea.. He is the organiser and a voice of calm while we're under pressure, which against Barcelona, could be a lot of the time! I also believe that the other players feel more certain of themselves when he is playing because of his presence.

I think we will need him for the FA cup Semi and Barcelona at least.

TERRY UPDATE

The club has released the following statement regarding the fitness of John Terry.

Scans confirm that John has two cracked ribs sustained in last week's game in Portugal. We have been able to manage it and will continue to do so.We will continue to monitor it on a daily basis and will assess him for upcoming games.

Well said Chippy. There has been a great deal of talk in the press (and on the forums actually) about Ashley Cole and John Terry being 'on the decline' but I don't buy it for a second. It's understandable that they might lose a bit of pace entering their 30s but ultimately I think it was poor tactics rather than a loss of ability which caused their dip in performance.

JT was horrifically exposed with the high line (culminating in that car crash of a performance against Arsenal) and Ashley Cole was left alone to defend the entire left flank, only supported by Mata, who has about as much defensive presence as Ronaldinho. Since the defence has moved deeper and we started playing Kalou/Ramires on the left, JT and Cole have essentially been as good as ever. Obviously I am seeing him through blue-tinted spectacles and the Premier League is also fairly dogsh*t at the moment, but I'm not sure there is a better defender than JT in the league. Not to mention his outrageous two-footed passing...

How long do cracked ribs normally take to mend or is that a how long is a piece of string question
