The return of the Super League...

Might be unpopular here, but I’m much more open to the idea of a Super League than I was in 2021.

Provided it’s based on meritocracy rather than it being a closed league format, I could see it gaining traction.

I think UEFA are an appalling governing body who don’t have a god given right to have a monopoly on European football for eternity.

I’m looking forward to the inevitable hysteria from the likes of Gary Neville.

According to the rules posted above, entering the lowest tier is based on domestic performance, so it is not substituting the PL. But I’m not sure what happens once your in and you get promoted in the super league but are crap in the domestic league. Basically, it appears to be an alternative to the Champions League, Europa League and Conference Cup. If it pisses off the likes of Neville, UEFA, the FA and PL, I’m on board this time. f**k the lot of those guardians of morality but corrupted to the core.

They are not going to want a mid table team in a super league.  This slump may have come at a good time.

Think we are safe for the time being.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are very happy right now. I imagine juventus is as well. Barcelona are probably throwing a party that they’ll have an additional influx of money so that they can continue to make terrible financial decisions. Part of me hopes that the chickens come home to roost but I’m sure that won’t happen, and they’ll be bailed out if and when the time comes.

If it’s true that it’s becoming illegal for clubs to leave uefa (way to tackle the important issues by the govt there) then what European court decides is irrelevant regarding Chelsea and English clubs then right?

I saw Man U come out against the super league but hadn’t seen any Chelsea statements in any fashion.

anyways, morning everyone

I love Champions League but at the same time I am not 100% why Super League is so bad. I understand history, sentiment, new thing and all that but not sure why that League would be such horrible.

It's only a natural thing in this late-stage capitalism world, the Super League will eat the CL alive in due time just like the CL did it to the European Cup.

It went from knockouts to a guaranteed number of matches in the group stage but since more money is needed, the CL will increase the format to a minimal of 8 matches played but the Super league wants to take it to a higher level with a minimum of 14 matches played. It's all business now.

On the basis this will be completely different, right.

I understand that. And I am against playing more matches because the players and coaches say it is too many games as it is.

I guess my question is if you are okay with Champions League why is the Super League so bad? As you said CL ate the European Cup but I have never heard anyone complain...

but I have never heard anyone complain...
I have! It should always have been for the champions of each and every European league. The Finnish champions should have the same crack at it as all the others. But hey, that doesn’t generate as much cash and doesn’t please the fans of teams in the big four countries fighting for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. We’ve pretty much got a European super league already. Little to do with Champions anyway.

All the fan objections from before will still apply, albeit you can see they are trying to get supporters onside by offering "free" TV coverage for the games ...

Frankly I don't see why other European clubs should have to bale out Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus for the millions they have squandered through being incredibly poorly run by their shyster owners. Let them all rot I say ...
Errrrmmm....

I don't particularly want the Super League, but I don't want the changes for the Champions League or the inclusion of the Club World Cup in 2025 either.

I was really against the Super League in 2021, but was disappointed by how we haven't maintained that same energy when it comes to UEFA, FIFA and the Premier League. So I'm not as passionately against it as I was before. Personally, I hate what UEFA and FIFA are doing to the game, I'm not fond of how the Premier League is managed either.

I'm sure loud mouths like Neville will speak up again, ignoring the fact that he works for a company that are part of the problem and why the likes of the Super League is being pushed so hard today.

We’ll see how it fares if the FA decides to punish Man City for their breaking of the FFP rules. The FA has a tough decision to make, it could be the hand that kick starts the Superleague if they piss off City by punishing them or, in case of looking the other way, they could be committing suicide after they chose to punish Everton but do nothing to City for fear of them going off to the Superleague.

Or if the PL decides to punish us heavily.

Perfectly happy to have an alternative to the champions league if everyone joins up. Could mean more money swilling around. I don't even care if it's not meritocratic, as long as the league winners are in it then fine.

I'm concerned however that what we are most likely about to see is certain continental clubs going one way and the English clubs going another.

That won't be good for the game.

Hi mate, I've seen several comments about possible punishments driving clubs to join a super League, but I can't see why it should do ?

Surely there is also a heavy sanction and punishment if any club joins the super League?
