Is it the mighty Zlatan? (thought I'd get that in before anyone else did! lol) Emile 'Sack of Potatoes' Heskey? Gerrard Stephens? Paul Scholes? Adriano? Totti? A. Cole?

So many names...so little time!

As you say, Brian, so many names.....

But when it comes to overrated players, there's one stands out head and shoulders above the rest for me - David Beckham

Del Piero for me.

Closely followed by Stuart Downing.

I don't know fully, but I would probably put Torres up there, mainlt because of the hype that surrounded him. Not that I wouldn't welcome him to Chelsea.

However, I think david Beckahm is vastly over-rated. I loved George best's acceptance speech on behalf of Beckham, think it was for European midfielder....anyway, best was asked if david should ahve got European player of the year, not just midfielder. Best told them that Beckham shouldn't even be the best Midfielder because he isn't good at tackling, crossing with his left foot, or heading.

Great from the person accepting the award on his behalf

Scott

Gerrard for me. Beckham would until recently have taken the award, moving to the US is pretty much an acknowledgement that his best (as in the sense of best opportunity for overhype) days are behind him. Gerrard on the other hand, is revered by the media, is a whining Scouse git whose frequent diving is not only overlooked but actually applauded. Not to mention the Gerrard/Lampard arguments, media instigated in my opinion - never mind the stats and facts, Lampard being a Chelsea player is by definition The Villain, (just as Peter Bonetti was to blame for England being knocked out of the 1970 World Cup - never mind that he wasn't fit and shouldn't have played in the first place) and Saint Stevie by divine right of being a Scouse born Liverpool player can never, ever do any wrong.

Gerrard gets my vote as well.

He is a good player but commentators, pundits etc. make out he's God and never ever does anything wrong. I strangely never hear how Lampard outscores Gerrard every season, but then commentators have a love explosion every time Gerrard tackles a player.

as much as I want to say Stevie Me.

it's gotta be Becks, I mean come on, the pub this guy gets would make you think he walks on water, cured cancer, and brought peace to the world. He's just a footballer with a wife who has big knockers.

Most over rated player in Europe just now....hmm tough call as you have to facot in how much they are rated before determing how much they are over rated. (i.e. I wouldn't pick Zlatan as I think there are enough people who don't rate him that highly)

Personally I would go for someone like Torres - perpetually claimed to be a ?25m+ striker witht he world at his feet and perpetually failing to live up to it.

Reading the papers I would say that anyone in Liverpool is the most overrated player right now. They don't win a thing and still they're considered to be masters of the universe.

Other than that I think I have to agree with Loz. I don't think Torres is a bad player but I feel that he has a too heavy burden on his shoulders. It seems as if he's the one who has to do everything and that makes him play bad from time to time.

But him in a team like Real Madrid, Barcelona, ManU or Chelsea and he will grow into an excellent player (unless the british style doesn't suit him ofcourse).

Stevens for me. Although anytime he does anything good I pretend I didn't see it.

Most overrated player on the CSR is Mikel, taking over Joe's crown.

There are games where he's been many posters' man of the match when he looked lost for most of the time to me. He has a pleasingly languid style, and he's got great potential, but somone on another thread has suggested him for a place in the top 50 world players.

Was still going to say Joe Cole, but your comments about Mikel are also correct.

Mikel has great awareness (better than Joe Cole actually, near Lampard's level in fact), and composure, but still lacks experience in decision-making, and his passing over anything more than 15 yards isn't great. Pretty sure he will improve and his potential is fantastic, but he is not a great player yet.

On Mikel I would say he is comfortably one of the most promising talents in Europe - for a kid of his age he shows a phenominal degree of maturity (on the pitch at least) and his awareness of his team mates positions defies his youth.

However it is probably fair to say that he still has a lot of development to go and therefore maybe people are blowing his trumpet (oooerr missus) a little too loudly just now. However I am very very confident he is going to a stunning player in a few years time.

If he was English or played for Arsenal he'd be labelled the new Zidane by the British media.

FACT.

I think you'll find there's something in the Ars*nal football club charter that prevents them from playing anyone born in England, Alan...

Oh dear. I think someone's in for a nasty shock. Should I tell him or will someone else?

zlatan is obviously one... and so is gerrard... but actually I'm going with two:

tevez- IMO a quality footballer, but the hype over the last 12 months... really, really excessive. there have been comparisons with zola on here for some reason.

and carragher... he's a brave, reliable and consistant defender, but he's at least one notch below the elite.
