September 17, 20169 yr On the board of another football team I saw a thread about fans recounting their experiences being attacked attending matches a few decades ago. They were talking about being beaten up passing by bars, beaten or kicked inside the stadiums, having things thrown at them, even knifed. They didn't seem to be members of hooligan firms. Of course the incidents might have been embellished and/or they actually were members of firms looking for trouble but didn't admit it. I read a book by a former hooligan firm leader. He talked about "scheduling" confrontations with rival team firms. It focused mainly on gang versus gang, not gang attacks on random spectators. As a member of the younger generation, the descriptions seem surreal. I can't imagine going to a game, even an away game, and getting physically assaulted for wearing a Chelsea shirt. Verbal abuse sure, but not physical assault. Are those stories embellishments, or did stuff like that actually happen to you? I'm kind of skeptical because kids attended those games too, and I can't imagine that parents would take their kids to games if the atmosphere really was like that.
