Some info about Maribor...
Maribor is a city with around 100,000 people and is the second city of Slovenia, but is just a town really! It is the home to the worlds oldest wine tree, which is a great photo opportunity! and where Hiltler made one of his last speaches. There is a small mountain at the edge of the town called Pohorje where there is hotel where the team will be staying. For the size of the town there are Quite a few lively pubs and clubs espcially when the students are in town, which they are now. Currently the weather is a bit chilly at 10 deg C during the day and 2ish on a night
Maribor fans are normally very friendly but there is a group of around 100 fans who will probably look for a fight to try and prove themselves against one of the giants of Europe. But if you show that you are not looking for trouble then you should be perfectly safe especially as there will be a large police presence in the town.
The main areas to go drinking are in the centre, Postna Ulica (post street) and Glavni Trg (main square) these 2 are next to each other and are the most popular places to eat and drink and where most of the normal folk hang out. There is also the riverside very close to this which is a nice place to grab a beer of coffee in the sun. You Will be advised to go to Grajski Trg (castle square) before the game to get a police escort to the ground. I advise you to do this but not to go there too early or stay there all day as it will be too heavily policed and you wont get a true feeling of the town.
I have a small pub right in the centre of town in Glavni Trg called The Living Room, you are of course more than welcoem to come and join us for a drink. Wigan fans made us one of their unofficial homes during their Europa League tie last year and had a great time. We have food and lots of different beers and Will be doing a Balkan Beer tour next week with beer from Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia. No pressure to buy anything from us but if you need help with anything, from one Englishman to another; just pop in and ask for the owner, Dave. You can also contact me on our Facebook page fb/thelivingroomMB if you have any questions.
I (and the people of Maribor I'm sure!) hope you have a great trip and enjoy all that Maribor has to offer.
Cheers, Dave
