Loaning Benayoun to Arsenal...

Chelsea supporters will never be happy, had we signed Modric for 30m + Alex some of you would have gone mental.. always has to be something to nag about from some of you.. AVB is the manager, he knows what he is doing and I can't see losing a 31 year old Benayoun being a bloody disaster that will f**k up our season really..

Oh btw, Luiz and Sturridge are back now as well.
What is it with this argument? Things are never black and white, but for some reason, complaining about one thing leads people to assume that person is a malcontent and is "never happy no matter what the club does forever and ever and ever."

Personally, i am elated at our other transfer dealings. Loaned youngsters to great clubs where they will play regularly. Got two very young, bright talents who could excel for us, and added 2 more who may be superstars in a couple of years time. We added a player who, IMO, will be the signign of the season. We werent held to ransom by a club we hate, and got an adequate replacement for our #1 transfer target at 1/3 of the price. Basically, I am extremely confident that we will push for the title and other top honors this year.

But, Andreas, if you can offer me a single good thing about this Benayoun transfer, I will shut my mouth. People are complaining about this because it really makes no god damn sense right now.

All summer we've been waiting for creative players to come in to compliment the only player with a bit of guille currently on our books. We sign one .. Mata ( who has still to settle in the premierleague) and let the other go. Nonsensical given that we have directly strengthened a rival. The deal really has no advantages to us other than to remove a player from the wage bill and replacing him with a player who offers very little more than the existing midfield does.

The only reasons I can think off for this was to make space for Mereiles wages, Benayoun has struggled with injuries or he wasnt happy to be seen as a squad player. Other than that I`m at a loss as to why this loan happened.

Lot of guff being written on this thread.

Benayoun wasn't up to it. The manager knew that. He had a look and came to that conclusion. The manager didn't want him. The manager backed his judgement. We want a manager that does that. That knows what he wants and knows what he doesn't want. He wasn't bothered about giving him to Arsenal, and full power to him. He has the courage of his conviction. Take a bow son.

We offered Dalglish Benayoun as a replacement for Mereiles. We valued Benayoun at £3m. Dalglish didn't want him. Redknapp didn't want him, despite the fact he was desperately short of numbers. Benayoun is 31 years old, has had a year out with injury. He was never that great to start with. He was good, but for a club like ours, was never going to command a regular spot. There is no guarantee his achilles is up to it. Either way, he is no prized asset, there was no long line of suitors.

The manager looked. He didn't fancy him. One bit. He wanted him out, so much so that he sent him to one of our major rivals on loan, a major rival that was desperate, given the fact they've just lost two heavyweights and run out of time.

Even Arsenal wouldn't take the risk of a permanent deal, despite the fact they could have got him on the cheap (just as they like it).

Will he pull up any trees at Arsenal? Not likely. AVB decreed he was a dud, or a crock, or both. That's good enough for me. He's closer to the squad than any of us and he's achieved more in the game. I think he deserves our trust at this stage. Cut him some slack.

Mereiles? Good signing. Very good signing. Far better than some of you appreciate.

We wanted Modric. We deemed him good enough to walk into our first team. We deemed him good enough to strengthen us. We deemed him realistic in terms of wages and worth the outlay. We did not find anyone else that ticked those boxes, not in the manager's opinion. So what did we do? We held back, quite rightly. I congratulate the manager for this. It's quite obvious the money was there, but he was prudent, quite wisely. Silly sums on a player the manager deems unworthy of granting a first-team spot is foolish, for once you have him you're stuck with him, and you preclude yourself from buying a replacement (as we'll find with Torres). AVB has done us all a favour here. Prudence was the order of the day.

Mereiles has come as back-up. Quality back-up. We needed back-up, badly. Ramires or Lampard get injured and we're f**ked. Josh is potentially our best player but he's not ready to play ten games in a row in the frenetic and aggressive Prem, not if we want to win it, not in high-octane top of the table clashes. We must not rely upon him, for this will impede his development. He's ready to feature, not to play every game. He's nowhere near that stage yet. Midfield is the battleground. AVB has protected him with this signing, and for that we must all be thankful. We will see Josh but we will not be relying completely upon him. That's as it should be.

Every squad needs its foot soldiers and we have bought a better foot soldier than Smertin, Maniche, Tiago, Jarosik and the rest. Mereiles may not be the world's greatest player but he is no mug, give him his due. Five years younger than Lampard, at his peak, 50 caps for Portugal (who aren't a bad side), the same nationality as the manager, and popular with scousers even though Hodgson signed him. Furthermore he's adjusted to the Prem. At £12m I'd say we've done good business. I'd say we needed him. I'd say we're lucky to have him. We could have done a lot worse.

He will know he can't walk into our side. He will know the quality we possess, the trophies we've won. Similarly he will know he has a shot because he's a good player and he will get games due to our limited options in midfield. He will give us quality, far more quality than Benayoun. He will give us versatility. Presence. He's the manager's signing, someone he can depend upon. That counts for a lot.

Modric would have been great (if not worth £40m). I will console myself with the fact we bought Mata and that will give us the subtlety we crave, albeit in a different position. Let's not be too greedy. Remember every squad needs its foot soldiers and not every signing can be glamourous. Mereiles will do for me, given what he's been brought in for.

I commend the manager and I welcome Mereiles to our club. And so should you.

EDIT: Thank you for reading.

A very good post. My only question for you is at the end of last season ,did you think our side lacks foot soldiers or creation in CM? Raul Meireles in undoubtably a good player but I'd question is he the right player for us at this time? I know we have got Mata to give us something different and hopefully he will consistantly throughout this season.

Davey, there are thousands of clubs out there. And im sure all but a handful would love to have Yossi Benayoun playing for them. Everything you wrote still doesnt explain why sending him there was the best option for us as a club. Yeah, he probably wont do much at Arsenal. But for the price of paying his wages, we just offered them another option. If he said "its arsenal or nothing" then I wouldve kept him here and told him to wait his turn on the bench for when he was needed.

And IMO many of the people complaining about this are not slating the Meireles signing, at all. Hating this and loving the signing are mutually exclusive. Its just hard to understand how giving a player away to a rival helps us in any way when there couldve been many other solutions.

We could easily have got a couple of million for him from a lower club, like a Villa or a Wigan or a Stoke. Loaning to a rival makes no sense to me.

How many of thsoe clubs do you think would have paid a couple of mill for a player coming off a very bad injury? I dont think any of them would have taken a chance on Benayoun. especially with the wages he is on here.

Benayoun wasn't up to it. Blah Blah

Get over yourself mate! I doubt very much you know as much as you think you do regarding this deal.

It was a strange move loaning Yossi to them but lets not pretend we know whats going on inside the head of AVB!

I don't see why you consider Arsenal to be one of you rivals, or is it from a Geographical point of view (two London clubs). I really think this year Premier League has been split into two.

You have the Contenders:

Man U

Man C

Chelsea

Then the Europe hopefuls

Liverpool

Arsenal

maybe Spurs.

I can't see Liverpool or Arsenal contending for the title. Simply because they haven't got the squad to do it. So the Benayoun transfer shouldn't really have a knock on effect?

Just my point of view on the Benayoun/Arsenal situation.

Not sure if anyone has put this but i got bored halfway through this thread, but had our full foreign quota of players so we had to let yossi go to sign meireles,

Is that correct? I havent seen that anyway, it would certainly put a new slant on it.

To add to what's already been said, there was a very good point made on Chelsea TV earlier. That we chose to loan Benayoun to Arsenal, not only because AVB doesn't particularly rate Benayoun, but also because we no longer see Arsenal as a threat.

It has to be said that Arsenal's deadline day purchases smacked of desperation, and that the loan signing of Benayoun was just one more indication of this desperation.

The manc teams are the biggest rivals now, Liverpool look better than Arsenal from the opening 3. Indirectly it could be said that CFC have bought players for them with purchases of FT & RM, so perhaps it would be better to get 'upset' that CFC have strengthened them not the Gooners with this Yossi loan.

Probably should re visit this whole thread at Christmas when these type of hypotheses may have some meaning.

Forssell broke his knee multiple times because he was mismanaged? Was Hutch also mismanaged then?

I want to go back to my previouse question... why dont we rate Benayoun? he was the best player in pre-season which was acknolaged by many on this bord... yes AVB may see it different but that doesnt mean he's right.

AVB last time i cheacked wasnt a member of this forum, so as fans lets remove in our manager we trust syndrome for a moment and ask your selves, based on what you know and have seen, would you have done the same thing?

Yes probably, wouldnt have gone for a player like meireles myself though even if he is a good signing.

Benayoun was a decent sqaud player, nothing more nothing less. If we want Josh as a more attacking player then Benayoun would be getting in the way. Yes Benayoun was the best player pre season. But its pre season anyone can play well pre season, its all about getting fitness and binding as a team. I dont think his preformances were that good that i sat there and said wow, why isnt he in our starting line up? We will see more benifits of giving josh game time than carrying on with Yossi.

Forsell's injurys mean regardless of what we did he would never have been able to completly fufil his potential.

Mismanagment would be that he did very well on loan at several clubs, he comes back finaly looks like he going to have, roman comes in and we spend 40 + million on strikers. so Mika goes out again, at birmingham he outscored all our strikers. Thats what I call missmanagment.

As i said he later went on to damage his knee's and that is part of life and sport however, there was no need to farm him out that last time, he was ready to start for us. that's miss managment

davey baby, I'm probably someone who has posted the "guff" you so wonderfully dismissed.

you repeat the line about foot soldiers.

it is true. every squad needs a couple of 7/10 steady players.

the problem is that our central midfield options consist entirely of those players. not one outstanding player amongst them.

lampard is not what he was.

essien isn't either. and wasn't ever what some people think he was.

ramires is a midfielder who is average with the ball. he has a place in the squad, but that place should be coming on in the last 15 minutes to help us see out the game.

mikel. definition of foot soldier. I like him but he will never have the sort of influence we need from at least one of the midfield three.

romeu. who knows. if he's good he'll go.too soon to expect huge things from him anyway.

mceachran. quite possibly the future. he's ready to play, but not regularly.

meireles. back up is how you describe him.

do you think back up is what was needed? you sign back up when the first choices are absolutely worthy of being first choices. when that is debatable, you don't sign back up. you sign competition.

avb has my trust, but it is not an unconditional, head-in-the-sand, mother knows best, be seen but not heard type of trust. I am impressed with what he says and extremely impressed with his career so far. despite that, I can't honestly say I know where he is heading or how he will shape his team. I have an idea, but it isn't totally clear yet. while that is true, you'll have to excuse my questioning this transfer.

Which makes me wonder whether there isn't some other issue here that we don't know about. He's the type of player we need, did well in the friendlies, yet he's had exactly 3 minutes of playing time this season and we've seemed desperate to offload him. Offered him in part exchange to Liverpool and Spurs, who both said no, and finally farmed him out to Arsenal on loan. It seems to me that someone just wanted him out, anywhere.
