Posted October 23, 201113 yr Carlo was on Sportsweek this morning, he was gracious and endearing as ever even though he was touting for a job in the PL, the thing is, he was asked about the sacking of Ray Wilkins and hinted that it was a result of a falling out between Ray and Frank Arnesen, is this common knowledge? can someone enlighten me about this? Thanks.
October 23, 201113 yr Hadn't Arnesen already come out and said he was leaving in the summer by the time Wilkins was sacked? Could be wrong though. I have heard there were two things which left Roman underwhelmed .. 1. He got a little bit tiddly on the way back from Spartak. 2. After our exit to Inter, he told Roman to hold back on the inquest. Could be rubbish though. It seems certain however that he was sacked during half-time of a reserve game at Cobham, against Carlo's wishes. Considering he was a club legend, with blue blood running through his veins, it was crass in the extreme. I also think it undermined Carlo in the eyes of the players, as he came across as weak, or passive. Edit: Judging by our performances afterwards, something was seriously amiss backstage. October 23, 201113 yr That word "sacked" again. I can still remember when the announcement was made, it was to the effect that Ray Wilkins' contract was not going to be renewed. In fact here's the club's announcement: WILKINS LEAVES CHELSEAChelsea Football Club chief executive Ron Gourlay has announced today that the board has decided not to renew Ray Wilkins' contract. This will take effect immediately. Gourlay said: 'On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to thank Ray for everything he has done for Chelsea Football Club. We all wish him well for the future.' Earliest media reports stated clearly that Ray Wilkins was stunned to hear that his contract would not be renewed. Not that he had been sacked, not that his contract had been terminated, but that his contract was not going to be renewed. The other myth common at the time was that Ray Wilkins had had been associated with the club for an unbroken period of over 30 years, conveniently overlooking the fact that he'd actually been back at the club for a little over a year, being brought in during the Scolari era, which barring a brief period as caretaker manager in 2000, was his sole association with the club since he left for Man U in 1979.

What is beyond dispute is that Wilkins didn't see his contract out to the end, hence the compensation he was given. Edit: The fact that he received compensation suggests that he didn't walk out on that contract. Edited October 23, 201113 yr by Davey Baby
