  2. Good luck on Monday CFC. Lukaku is da man
  3. Let's just say I'm a mature fan, all I have left is my long term memory! As a kid in the 70's I remember the opposition defenders at Maine Road would often spend a few minutes during the game simply accepting the ball from the goalie and passing it back to him repeatedly, usually the defenders took turns. It was mind numbing, usually when the opposition were one or two goals up. That simple rule revolutionized the game overnight, but largely went unmissed. The other significant rule change was three points for a win replacing the dreary two points. That change also had a dramatic effect. Oh, aye....... while I'm reminiscing ack in those days everyone under the age of 40 wore their colours, if you form't you wern't considered a fan, a scarf was compulsory! Also football violence was endemic back then, everyone wore colours but the nutters went OTT, hats, scarves round the neck and one silk one tied around the wrist.... you looked the business along with your flares and long hair! Now mocking the opposition scarves.... well that's another story as I'm sure a few 'mature students of the game ' will remember! Blue Grandad (well not quite yet!) signing off. Note to self: Don't go to the boozer for no reason on a Monday night.
  4. I think we have to agree to differ here. It's chronicled ie Wikipedia that it was one of the topics raised at that meeting. I also remember Wimbledon's endurance in the top league in the 80's was partly due to receiving 50% gate money. However, Wikipedia have been wrong before and so have I!
  5. Modern English football changed at a secret meeting held in London back in 1991. Only four clubs were there by invitation only. Man u, arsenal, Liverpool and Everton This meeting was instigated by LWT Chairman and man u fan Greg Dyke who proposed clubs should keep 100% of gate receipts as opposed to sharing and control future Tv deals. Alan Sugar also had a vote and surprise surprise the vote instigated a breakaway league. Alan Sugar company, Amstrad sold all the satellite boxes and dishes. I seem to remember both scouse clubs voted against, probably because they had enjoyed success throughout the 80's and didn't fancy change. The remaining First Division clubs not invited to the meeting were then invited to join them in a new league called The Premiership. Manchester United won it a year later for the first time in 26 years. So, yes, morals and dignity started to drift from then on.
  6. Envious. But you can't help but get on a moral high horse when your clubs skint. However, it dawned on me about six years who that your team will win nowt in the Premiership unless your minted. A sobering fact. .
  7. Agreed. Some city fans are getting on my nerves with their gobbiness, most of the hobby ones don't go. My view is that when you'be been rock bottom, ie eating humble pie in the lower divisions getting beat off the likes of Wycombe, York and Lincoln arrogance is impossible. United were minted in the 90's due to share issues (Martin Edwards walked off with £105M!). They could buy anyone they wanted until Abramovich showed up. In recent times there have only been two fat cats at the table, now there are three. If you can't beet them join them! But from a football purists point of view it ain't right. Ho hum
  8. Thanks pal. I hope this coming season has more twists and turns than last season. I'm now 50, debut at the Bridge was 1985, been there about 10 times. That old uncovered end was painful, miles from the pitch, always raining, poor game and we usually lost! How times have changed!
  9. The one thing that none of us can understand is 'Why City?' As outsiders looking in, what do you reckon. Surely the club to buy would have been united, these Arab chaps (peace be upon them) could have bought out the lovely Glazers with money found down the back of the couch! Back in the 90's it wasn't a surprise that Abramovich picked you lot . Why us though?
  10. Can't argue with that. I remember when Jack Walker took over Blackburn who were then in the old second division averaging 6,000 crowds I was split 50/50. Yep, I was envious of their astonishing wealth (£550M) and thought they were 'cheating', but on the other hand I thought it was refreshing. Never thought in my wildest dreams it would happen to us! Yes, it appears the majority of the flack is coming from Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs fans/clubs.
  11. Greetings from sun drenched Manchester. Everyone loved Little Cute City when we were floundering in the old third division. Not any more for some reason or other
  12. I can't remember a player taking such a long time to make a decision; I find it mystifying. Sick or twist John, make your mind up FFS! Say something! Damage has already been done due to his silence on the issue. As fans we all fall into the trap of player loyalty, because we're all 'loyal' as fans to our team.... so surely the players should feel the same? Sorry, that mindset went a long long time ago. I'm not so sure that if Terry does move it's purely a case of greed. From what I've read I get the impression he might well feel stale & wants new challenge/new faces/different goldfish bowl etc and he certainly would get that at Eastlands. 50/50 IMHO
  13. One of my earliest football memories was the Chelsea/Leeds replay 1970; a memorable game...... but we City fans were well pissed off as the TV schedule had the European Cup Winners Cup Final live that night; Man City v Gornik Zabreze which we won 2-1. It was cancelled & replaced by your game. All we saw was a one line result banner after the FA cup final..... Manchester City 2 Gornik Zabreze 1 .... no TV goals, sod all!! The two 0-1 results v Chelsea the following season in the semi really hurt.
  14. Pre circa 1970 most people regarded winning the FA Cup more important than winning the lleague! Strange, but true. Look at most clubs record attendances; 90% are aFA Cup games.
  15. Been a STH for 38 years so I've seen the whole City saga. I remember Bell, Lee, Summerbee as a kid and missing out the title by one point back in 77 to Liverpool, but my favourite season was when Kevin Keegan got us promoted back in 2002; greatentertaining football, over 100 goals.
  16. Far too quiet for a captain. JT has all the right captain qualities; worth a punt from MCFC's point of view IMHO.
