Guus Hiddink: AVB needs time

Featured Replies

Excellent interview from the Teleghraph:

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas needs time to build Stamford Bridge dynasty, insists Guus Hiddink

Guus Hiddink has called on Chelsea to give Andre Villas-Boas time as manager, affording the club “the stability†that made Manchester United so strong.

Hiddink, formerly the Chelsea caretaker manager and still close to Roman Abramovich, also believes that John Terry and Frank Lampard will help the 33-year-old Villas-Boas settle in.

Currently Turkey coach, Hiddink is the only one of Abramovich’s six former managers not to have been dismissed by the Russian, the Dutchman walking away in 2009. “If you look at United, they are the example that clubs need stability,’’ said Hiddink.

“This is what Chelsea need as well. Carlo [Ancelotti] did well for the last two years but hopefully now, this decision [to appoint Villas-Boas] will bring success for the upcoming time as well.â€

The point has been made to Abramovich and his advisers about the importance of continuity in the dug-out. “Yes. I think they are convinced as well now.â€

Hiddink’s successor, Ancelotti, had one fantastic season, and one disappointing. “He won the Double. He reacted very well and he is a gentleman. It is the strategy and philosophy of a club. Of course if you win the Double and you go it is harsh – but it’s football.â€

After the Italian departed last May, Hiddink says he was never offered the job. “No, we didn’t have any contact about the specifics of the job. The president [of the Turkish FA] came to me and said: ‘There are rumours about Chelsea. Please don’t think about leaving’. I told him there was nothing direct or concrete so I would not react.’’

Abramovich did not consult Hiddink over Villas-Boas. “No, no, no. They look to the coaches and they made up their mind. Every now and then I have contact with people inside Chelsea and I love to go there. But I had my contract with Turkey first of all and secondly they have gone their way to sign the young, upcoming, promising coach from Porto.

“He did a great job last season and he should have an opportunity to work. It is a very young age but he has proved at Porto that he is good. The Premier League is different but young people must be given a chance. You can gain respect at 33 or 35. It depends on the quality of the manager and also his human qualities.

"Age does not have to mean the players consider him as a brother. If they feel he is straightforward and has good integrity he will be fine.

“It is a squad which has been a long time and new additions coming in. They have their own pride as a group and he can manage. On top of that, Terry and Lampard know what is demanded in England. They take the lead.’’

Terry has already said he wants to manage Chelsea one day. “Why not?’’ said Hiddink. “He can make that transformation but he has to be intelligent.’’

In case anyone's missed it, this excerpt from the above puts to bed the rumour (see the Sun, Mail, Star et al) that AVB was our second choice to take over from Ancelotti after we were snubbed by Guus Hiddink:

After the Italian departed last May, Hiddink says he was never offered the job. “No, we didn’t have any contact about the specifics of the job. The president [of the Turkish FA] came to me and said: ‘There are rumours about Chelsea. Please don’t think about leaving’. I told him there was nothing direct or concrete so I would not react.’’

Nice little article that, but as usual it will be ignored by certain people. Guus really is one of the nicest men in football isnt he.

Great read from a highly intelligent football man . but i doubt Roman will give him more than 2 years to win us the CL and if we dont win a trophy this season then he's a gonner .
