I’ve read some stuff in the net, but I’d like to see what opinions are out there from Chelsea posters.  Why don’t you have a national football team? Is there any talk of it happening?  
 

In all seriousness, is there any UK national pride or is it just Scottish, Welsh, NI, and English?
like in the Olympics would an Englshman root for a Scot representing Great Britain?  In the wars did welsh scots and English fight in same units or were they homogenized?

I’d say that the little Southern Indiana backwater I’m from we almost always refer to your country as England.

You can never say it won't happen in the future though currently is unlikely.

A good question for yesteryear on maybe why it didn't happen before yet with British politics and Scottish Independence push from the SNP I can't see anyone wanting to push this just now.

We do compete in the Olympics as Britain and with rugby tours to the Southern Hemispshere - NZ, Australia and S.A we do this as the British and Irish Lions. 

I don't follow cricket yet can't recall a Wales or Scottish cricket team, if wrong on this someone correct me.

 

 

I believe the reason there isn’t a GB team is because each Country has it’s own independent football association and that’s who FIFA allow to ‘submit’ teams to competitions. There are one off occasions like The Olympics though.

So there is like a legitimate push Scottish independence?  I did not know that.

there are like fringy ideas here about secession but nothing serious.

It is serious yet they narrowly lost an election a few years ago yet argue since Brexit they now have a constitutional right to another referendum.

They have also lowered the voting age to 16. They can do this as since the Act of Union in 1707 they have an independent legal system.

I think there is a good chance they might win an independence referendum. COV-ID put much of this on the back-burner though it will resurface very soon. 

Is that a big deal in Britain?  What would be the pros and cons?

Indeed.

Rest of UK not too bad yet for Scotland might be quite painful especially if the EU makes them wait to join (Spain is quite against it). I think they could make it work as an independent yet after a painful change process. UK borrowing costs would increase by a margin for a while IMO yet Scotland's is open to question............

We had really dear Spanish friends from Barcelona that lived here for a couple years and they were very against Catalan independence.  They thought it was misguided and would lead to unnecessary hardship.  
 

thanks for the info.  I do understand local control though as an American.  Our federalism seems to be quite a bit different than what Britain has.  Historically and according to the 10th Amendment to our short little Constitution, states have quite a bit of power.  That’s why here for COVID for instance, there was a wide variance for lockdown policies.  In general here Republicans are for more state control and Democrats are in favor of more centralized control.

For instance there was a wide variance in schools.  Our kids didn’t miss a day of school this year in our district and most districts in our area.  Some schools missed slot and many kids in the country didn’t go to school a single day.

I have a relative that is Spanish and they were very much against Catalan independence. They saw it as a richer region of Spain trying to break away from a poorer Spain.

I studied conversational Spanish at evening school in the 90s and the teacher even then was saying about Catalonia being different and not just due to the language.

My relative says none of her family will buy a certain popular wine from that region if they break away.

It is ironic as in Spain half used to support Barca and the other half Real Madrid and it was seen as a Left vs Right political split, they also normally supported their local team.

Spain does not recognise Kosovo and fears once one region breaks other regional forces could reawaken should Catalonia leave.

Interestingly there are Catalans in Southern France though they seem more content with the status quo and there is also a Rugby League club called the Catalan Dragons and they compete with Rugby League clubs based in Northern England (In England Rugby split in about 1895.)
