The link within View New Content topics will take you to the first post within the topic after the one that you last saw, hence having to change to the last few pages to see the newer posts.

You can change this setting within your profile. Click your profile, then 'Account Settings' within the image at the top, then on the left click 'Content View Behavior' and change to what you prefer!
