Gullit slaughters Chelsea pair Ballack, Robben

Former Chelsea boss Ruud Gullit has urged the club to cash in on Arjen Robben and Michael Ballack.

He told the Sunday Mirror: "Chelsea need surgery. They have to cut people out, and the first one should be Michael Ballack.

"He's completely underestimated the Premier League.

"He is playing too slowly. He should be in another gear, but he does not get there. And because he was the biggest earner in the squad on ?130,000 a week, I know there was serious irritation among the other players.

"Also, because of Ballack, Frank Lampard had to play out of position all last season.

"I think the final straw came when Ballack decided to have an operation in Munich which made him miss the most important part of the season.

"Jose Mourinho had to point out that Ballack was no longer untouchable. And I understand that it really boosted the morale of the squad when that was said."

On Robben, Gullit was even harsher: "Everyone talks about his theatrical acts. People tell me you can't hoover the carpet in your front room when Chelsea are playing - because if you knock the television Robben will fall over.*

"He's a controversial character now. When he is fit and in the right shape he is one of the best left-wingers in the Premier League. But when the going gets tough, he always gets injured.

"What does not help him is his 'dying swan' act. Robben never stays on his feet.

"When you are a player at this level, you have to show you are a man too.

"In that respect, Robin van Persie is doing very well. His development is fantastic. The only thing I don't like about Arsenal is that they can't finish their wonderful play. There is never a goal at the end of a nice move."

Which proves you know very little about Arsenal. There are plenty of things to despise about them, Ruud. Wise up.
