I think some of you are watching these matches.
I saw Brazil destroy a poor Panama side last night. And in that game I saw the midfielder Chelsea need.
He's Philippe Coutinho. He's a true #10. Short, quick, fantastic control, outstanding vision and passing, finds open spaces, deadly in the box and he fights for the ball.
Sadly, he belongs to Inter. But they don't play him much, given his age. Great player and the maturity of his game, its completeness, stands in contrast to the man France play at #10...Gael Kakuta.
Another useful looking midfielder is Oscar. He played deep but made excellent runs forward with the ball and his passing, his transition play, was really good.
I don't know these young players so watching the U-20 World Cup is a good chance to spot the young stars.

I can't really say I've been following the competition, but I've caught the occasional bit of news about Chelsea players' involvement. This for instance, posted today on the official site::

GORDON’S U20 WORLD CUP BEGINS
Reserve team left-back Ben Gordon made his first appearance at the Under 20 World Cup as England kept alive hopes of progressing to the next stage of the tournament. A 0-0 draw with Mexico was the third goalless stalemate for the young England side but although they finish outside the top two in their group who are guaranteed progression, their three points give them a good chance of going through as one of the best third-placed sides.
Gordon (pictured front row, second from the right), who had been an unused sub in the first two group games, played the full 90 minutes of the match against Mexico which was played in the Columbian city of Cartagena.
The player first joined Chelsea in 2007 and has been on loan at Tranmere, Kilmarnock and Sc**thorpe.
Gael Kakuta and France are in action on Friday at the Under 20 World Cup. They play Mali, a side with many France-based players. A win for France would all but secure their place in the next round.

Yes Oscar is the next star midfielder for football. I like the way he play and defense.
I'm watching the match so I can have a new set of players to stay with in the next season.

Watched England-Mexico. Gordon played right back. England had a very defensive mind set, so he rarely ventured forward.
When he did, the give-and-go looked stiff. He has an imposing size for a fullback. But to me, he looked slow, especially when tracking back. He wasn't involved too much, Mexico didn't really attack him. But he didn't do much to stand out, either.

KAKUTA STAYS IN SOUTH AMERICA
Posted on: Sat 06 Aug 2011
Gael Kakuta played the first half against Mali as France progressed into the knockout stages of the Under 20 World Cup in Columbia.
Having lost their first group game heavily, the French have recovered with two wins and go through as the second-placed side.
On Friday they beat Mali 2-0 with the goals coming in the second half, Kakuta having had a shot blocked early in the first half.
New signing Oriol Romeu and keeper Matej Delac are in action on Saturday for Spain Under 20s and Croatia Under 20s respectively.

Spain has already qualified for the next round so massive changes to the squad for the game against Australia. Oriol not starting and I think the announcers said he was suspended.
18 minutes in and Spain 4 - Australia 0.

Thanks, that explains it. I caught the second half and never saw him. Poor old Australia.

I was watching and you can see that the Spanish NTs all have a similar style of play. I compare it to Klinsmann whose said that the US needs to find their identify. I don't expect it to be the Spanish style but I admit to jealousy of a country that is competitive at all the ages, youth to the full NT.

I clicked over this morning hoping to see Romeu and a good performance from Australia. When I woke up it was 5-1 and Romeu was suspended. It didn't hold my interest for long.

THREE OUT OF FOUR MAKE U20 KNOCKOUT
Posted on: Sat 06 Aug 2011
The group stage of the Under 20 World Cup in Columbia is now complete and Chelsea will have good representation in the quarter finals.
Only goalkeeper Matej Delac has been eliminated so far. Croatia suffered a third defeat out of three when they were beaten 1-0 by Guatemala.
England, with left-back Ben Gordon in their squad, did make it through as one of the best third-placed sides after the group stage. They now play Nigeria on Wednesday.
On the same day Gael Kakuta's France face Ecuador. The French were runners up in their group behind the host nation.
Wednesday is also the date of Spain's quarter final against South Korea. New-signing Oriol Romeu missed Spain's final group game, an impressive 5-1 win over Australia, having been booked in the two previous matches.
Spain won all three group games with a +9 goal difference.

Kakuta was a sub in France's 3rd place match. He came on at 70 mins.
They put him on the right wing and he looked a lot better there than he had at #10. Some nice moves and a handful of dangerous crosses.
Coutinho was subbed off Brazil's last two games. He wasn't good in the semi. He was doing OK in the final. but both times they replaced him live-wire winger Dudu, who was exceptional. And Oscar was phenomenal in the final. Still not sure if his third goal was a cross or a shot, but the keeper just couldn't reach it. Pity Inter own him.
