Thought provoking piece folks. Comments?

Only thing that can be said is that it is still sickening. Haven't read Black and Blue yet, but its in my summer reading list. Can't say I'm looking forward to it per se, but by all accounts its a bloody good read.

And its nice to see the club is actually showing him some respect now, and managing to get him tickets etc, unlike under the Bates era of pissing off the ex-players.

Canners' book is tremendous - a must-read for every Chelsea fan.

I can't help but think that the Daily Heil has published this to give the club and its followers yet more negative coverage (the fans are either plastic JCLs or NF racist thugs etc etc) in the build up to the final.

I've added a comment, but having added dozen down the years that they have refused to publish I'd be surprised to see it on there. Mind you, I've not used the comment to coorect some inaccuracy or take issue with the always hostile coverage.

So, in anticipation of the Daily Heil's censors consigning my comment to the bin, here it is:

Outstanding feature. [Had to write that to boost my chances of getting the comment through!] I stood on the Shed for Canners' home debut, and the abuse he took from his own fans was truly shocking. I marvelled at the way he appeared to ignore it and just got on with his game. How wrong I was - it was only when I read his book that I appreciated the utter torment the guy went through.

He's had an amazing life, and I highly recommend his book. Chelsea fans will always hold him in high esteem, not just for his on-field contribution, but for his courage and dignity in the face of the vicious racists who tried to drive him out all those years ago. He really did blaze a trail for a host of black Chelsea stars who the fans have taken to their hearts, from homegrown players like Newton, Duberry and Sinclair through to superstars like Gullit, Desailly, Makelele and Drogba.
