William Lewis (1906-1907)

Written by Bluebeard in May 2007

williamlewis1905-06.jpg After the surprise resignation of John Tait Robertson in November 2006, William Lewis took over as caretaker/manager until the end of the season.

Lewis started his football career as a referee, then became a director and later manager of Brentford between 1900 and 1903. He became Chelsea’s first club secretary when they were founded in 1905, and his contacts helped the club gain election to the Football League the same year.

Lewis continued Robertson’s good work, and led the club to promotion as runners-up to Nottingham Forest. After just two years of existence, Chelsea were in Division One!

Lewis left shortly after the end of the season, and was replaced by David Calderhead.

There is a shortage of information on Lewis out there on the internet and in books, possibly due to his short tenure. If anyone has anything they can add to this, or any more pictures, do get in contact.
