Posted September 4, 200915 yr district 9- cliched alien / disaster flick. riddled with flaws, although some good special effects. the writers clearly felt the need to hammer home that it's an apartheid allegory every 3 minutes for some reason. I did learn that all nigerian men are gangsters or con men, and all their women are open to inter-species prostition. oh and avoid old white men in suits being shadowy. the hurt locker- fairly rubbish characters, but good enough. tense, nice to have a war film with no political slant (well actually there is the americans are heroes and going to save the day thing, but that now bypasses my concious). shot in a way that makes it look like generation kill (the series by the creators of the wire). enjoyed it, probably wouldn't see it again. inglourious basterds- two fantastic scenes as good as anything tarantino's ever done (the opening, and the bar scene), one truly great performance from christopher waltz, a complete (and knowing) disregard for historical accuracy. everything aside from that was decent. entertaining overall, and quite funny. not as good as his first 3 films, but better than those since. so good to fair, great in places. mesrine: killer instinct, and part two, mesrine: public enemy no.1- great. excellent biography, deserves it's place in the group of gangster / heist films just below goodfellas and the godfather. go see them if you can.
September 4, 200915 yr dissappointed in district 9, i honestly thought it was going to be something a bit special. im not sure at what point it went wrong but it seemed to me as though some movie execs got hold of it and tried to make it a bit more "hollywood". still worth going to see as some of the set pieces are spectacular and the effects are pretty impressive.
