Geez, it really doesnt take much to get a story approved at the mail, does it? What a trivial, nothing (fake) story. Did any of the average blue collar punters that make up their readership shoot up and gasp when they read that Kenyon's wife was having a tiff with a friend?

Lies, damned lies and the Daily Mail. Or the Sun. Or the Star. Or (insert name of media rag of choice.

I find the following extract particularly informative:

The Daily Mail have now admitted they made it all up, after the club and Mr Kenyon pressed libel charges. As a result, the newspaper has forked out £20,000 in damages.

In a previous Fans Forum meeting between supporters and club officials, the issue of why the club doesn't press charges against false reporting like this more often was brought up. The club argued it was impossible for them to hit back with counter-statements and legal proceedings after every tabloid lie; they'd have no time left to get on with running the football club.

However, they did make it clear they would retaliate as and when they deemed it neccessary and, with Peter Kenyon's and the club's reputation on the line, this was clearly one of those occasions.
